This paper describes our recent attempts to incorporate human-like conversational behaviors into the dialog moves delivered by an animated pedagogical agent that simulates human tutors. We first present a brief overview of the modules comprising AutoTutor, an intelligent tutoring system. The second section describes a set of conversational behaviors that are being incorporated into AutoTutor. The behaviors of interest involve variations in intonation, head movements, arm and hand movements, facial expressions, eye blinking, gaze direction, and back-channel feedback. The final section presents a recent empirical study concerned with back-channel feedback events during human-to-human tutoring sessions. The back-channel feedback events emitted by tutors are mostly positive (63%), mostly verbal (77%), and immediately follow speech-act boundaries or noun-phrase boundaries (83%). Tutors also deliver back-channelevents at a very high rate when students are emitting dialog, about 13 events per minute. Conversely, 88% of students' back-channel feedback events are head nods, and they occur at unbounded locations (63%).  相似文献

The practice of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can significantly increase a website’s search rankings, driving more traffic to the website, and thereby increasing revenue. Three primary SEO strategies are Content, Link Building, and Social Sharing. Our study compares the performance of three similar content-rich websites; each uses a different SEO strategy – one focused on Content only, the second uses Content and proactive Link Building, and the third uses Content and Social Media campaign designed to elicit social mentions and social sharing. We use Google Analytics to collect, analyze, and compare their site traffic, domain authority, search ranks, and ad revenue before and after SEO implementation, over the course of 18 months. Our study suggests that link building and social media both improve website traffic and revenue. Social media can be an effective method for quickly building traffic (for events); however, link building provides better return on investment in the long run.  相似文献

Municipal biosolids are a source of nutrients for crop production. Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) can be used to minimize the risk of contamination of adjacent water resources with chemical or microbial agents that are of public or environmental health concern. In this field study, we applied biosolids slurry at a commercial rate using either subsurface injection or broadcast application followed by incorporation. Precipitation was simulated at 1, 3, 7, 22, 36 and 266 days post-application on 2 m2 microplots to evaluate surface runoff of 9 model pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), atenolol, carbamazepine, cotinine, gemfibrozil, naproxen, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, sulfamethoxazole and triclosan. In runoff from the injected plots, concentrations of the model PPCPs were generally below the limits of quantitation. In contrast, in the broadcast application treatment, the concentrations of atenolol, carbamazepine, cotinine, gemfibrozil, naproxen, sulfamethoxazole and triclosan on the day following application ranged from 70-1477 ng L− 1 in runoff and generally declined thereafter with first order kinetics. The total mass of PPCPs mobilized in surface runoff per m2 of the field ranged from 0.63 µg for atenolol to 21.1 µg for ibuprofen. For ibuprofen and acetaminophen, concentrations in runoff first decreased and then increased, suggesting that these drugs were initially chemically or physically sequestered in the biosolids slurry, and subsequently released in the soil. Carbamazepine and triclosan were detected at low concentrations in a runoff event 266 days after broadcast application. Overall, this study showed that injection of biosolids slurry below the soil surface could effectively eliminate surface runoff of PPCPs.  相似文献

Objective: This study examined whether uncontrollable stressful life events were associated with sexual risk taking among adolescents across a 1-year period, and whether supportive friendships modified associations. Design: Participants were 159 sexually active African American adolescents (57% male; mean age [SD] = 17.0 [1.5] years at baseline). Participants were recruited for in-person interviews through random digit dialing in one inner-city neighborhood characterized by high rates of poverty and crime relative to the surrounding city. Main Outcome Measures: Dependent variables included substance use before sexual activity and inconsistent condom use. Results: Among adolescents who reported low levels of supportive friendships, uncontrollable stressors were associated with greater levels of sexual risk taking over time. In contrast, uncontrollable stressors were not associated with sexual risk taking among adolescents who reported high social support from friends; risk taking was typically moderate to high among these adolescents. Conclusion: Different processes may explain sexual risk taking among adolescents with varying levels of social support from friends. Adolescents with low support may be prone to engagement in health risk behavior as a stress response, while adolescents with high support may engage in risk behavior primarily due to peer socialization of risk. This study aimed to investigate the rheology of two-mineral mixture systems as a function of pH and solid concentration. Single minerals (nickel oxide, quartz and hematite) and two-mineral systems (nickel oxide–quartz and nickel oxide–hematite) were studied. Rheology tests were conducted to investigate the effect of pH and solid concentration on shear yield stress of suspensions while zeta potential measurements of suspensions were used to explain the rheology results. Rheology results indicated that single mineral experiments showed that 5 and 10 vol.% of quartz and hematite had no shear yield stress whereas the one of nickel oxide was positive value. Shear yield stress of nickel oxide–quartz mixture and nickel oxide–hematite mixtures increased as increasing pH and solid concentration, and the value was higher than the one obtained with only nickel oxide. These results obtained with two-mineral mixture systems were explained by electrokinetic properties of the minerals, i.e. zeta potential of the minerals.  相似文献

The bioavailability of a single, 100 mg, dose of reduced Coenzyme Q10 (CoQH-CF) and Coenzyme Q10 formulation was compared in individuals of >60 years. Significantly higher (P < 0.001) plasma concentrations were demonstrated for the CoQH-CF formulation at 5, 6, 8, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h post-dose compared to the CoQ10 formulation. The area under the curve (AUC) of reduced and total Coenzyme Q10 was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in subjects administered CoQH-CF resulting in 4.3-fold higher plasma AUC0–72 h (430% increase) in subjects receiving CoQH-CF compared to subjects receiving Coenzyme Q10. Oxidized Coenzyme Q10 in plasma was higher (P < 0.001) in subjects receiving CoQH-CF compared to subjects receiving Coenzyme Q10 resulting in a 3.3-fold higher plasma AUC0–72 h (329% increase). Total CoQ10 reached maximum plasma concentrations 15.5 ± 19.6 h after supplementation with CoQH-CF and 26.5 ± 25.8 h after supplementation with Coenzyme Q10, respectively. Thus, reduced Coenzyme Q10 liquid soft gel formulation was found to be superior to the commercial formulation of Coenzyme Q10 for bioavailability.  相似文献

The application of a novel method for the identification of low-molecular-weight noncovalent ligands to a macromolecular target is reported. This technique is based on the measurement of analyte diffusion coefficients by electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) (Clark et al., Rapid Commun. Mass Spectrom. 2002, 16, 1454-1462). Potential ligands have large diffusion coefficients as long as they are free in solution. Binding to a macromolecular target, however, drastically reduces the diffusional mobility of any ligand species. Mixtures containing six different saccharides [ribose, rhamnose, glucose, maltose, maltotriose, and N,N',N'-triacetylchitotriose (NAG(3))] were screened for noncovalent binding to lysozyme. Of these six compounds, only NAG(3) is known to bind to the protein. In "direct" binding tests, NAG(3) shows a significantly reduced diffusion coefficient in the presence of the protein. No changes were observed for any of the other saccharides. In a second set of experiments, the use of a "competition" screening method was explored in which mixtures of candidate saccharides were tested for their ability to displace a reference ligand from the target. The addition of NAG(3)-containing mixtures significantly increased the diffusion coefficient of the reference ligand NAG(4) (N,N',N',N'-tetraacetylchitotetrose), whereas mixtures that did not contain NAG(3) had no effect. These data clearly indicate the potential of ESI-MS-based diffusion measurements as a novel tool to screen compound libraries for binding to proteins and other macromolecular targets. In contrast to conventional ESI-MS-based ligand-receptor binding studies, this method does not rely on the preservation of noncovalent interactions in the gas phase.  相似文献

A novel approach for the quantification of ligand-protein interactions is presented. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) is used to monitor the diffusion behavior of noncovalent ligands in the presence of their protein receptors. These data allow the fraction of free ligand in solution to be determined, such that the corresponding dissociation constants can be calculated. A set of conditions is developed that provides an "allowable range" of concentrations for this type of assay. The method is tested by applying it to two different inhibitor-enzyme systems. The dissociation constants measured for benzamidine-trypsin and for N,N',N' '-triacetylchitotriose-lysozyme are (50 +/- 10) and (6 +/- 1) mM, respectively. Both of these results are in good agreement with previous data from the literature. In contrast to traditional ESI-MS-based methods, the approach used in this work does not rely on the preservation of specific solution-type noncovalent interactions in the gas phase. It is shown that this method allows an accurate determination of dissociation constants, even in cases in which the ion abundance ratio of free to ligand-bound protein in ESI-MS does not reflect the corresponding concentration ratio in solution.  相似文献
