Molecular Cross-Talk between Gravity- and Light-Sensing Mechanisms in Euglena gracilis

Euglena gracilis is a photosynthetic flagellate. To acquire a suitable position in its surrounding aquatic environment, it exploits light and gravity primarily as environmental cues. Several physiological studies have indicated a fine-tuned relationship between gravity sensing (gravitaxis) and light sensing in E. gracilis. However, the underlying molecular mechanism is largely unknown. The photoreceptor photoactivated adenylyl cyclase (PAC) has been studied for over a decade. Nevertheless, no direct/indirect interaction partner (upstream/downstream) has been reported for PAC. It has been shown that a specific protein, kinase A (PKA), showed to be involved in phototaxis and gravitaxis. The current study reports the localization of the specific PKA and its relationship with PAC.     

Survival and movement of enterovirus in connection with land disposal of sludges

Coxsackievirus and tritiated water were added to municipal sludges which were placed on lysimeters containing sandy soil or clay soil. It took 23 weeks during a normal Danish winter to inactivate virus from an initial 10⁶tcid₅₀/g sludge to a not demonstrable level. Irrespective of sludge and soil type no virus was demonstrated in the leachate water. The rainfall during December–May was 300 mm.     

Microkinetic modeling as a tool in catalyst discovery

We propose a new approach for catalyst development that combines different scientific disciplines: experimental design, surface science, reaction kinetics and simulations with the objective of accelerating catalyst development. In this paper we present a study of the possibilities of using small data sets in microkinetic modeling, and studies of the required precision of temperature measurement.     

Infant mortality modelling for vlsi devices using graphical estimation

This paper presents a practical methodology for the routine analysis of VLSI infant mortality data. Device families are modelled using established graphical parameter estimation techniques, and the model parameters are applied to individual device types within the family. Burn-in requirements are calculated to achieve a desired early life reliability level. A technical summary of the methods is presented, and a small data set is analysed as an example. The analysis results from three large device families are also presented.
