Polarization-insensitivity is achieved in a reflective spatial light modulator by laying a quarter-wave plate (QWP) at the incident wavelength directly over the mirror pixels of a silicon backplane, and forming a nematic Freedrickcz cell over the QWP to modulate the reflected phase. To achieve the highest drive voltage from the available silicon process, a switched voltage common front electrode design is described, with variable amplitude square wave drive to the pixels to maintain constant root-mean-square drive and minimize phase fluctuations during the dc balance refresh cycle. The silicon has been fabricated and liquid-crystal-on-silicon cells both with and without the QWP assembled; applications include optically transparent switches for optical networks, beam steering for add-drop multiplexers for wavelength-division-multiplexing telecommunications, television multicast, and holographic projection.  相似文献

Analytical ultracentrifugation is commonly used for the determination of molecular weights (sedimentation equilibrium) and sedimentation coefficients (sedimentation rate) of biological macromolecules in solution. A Turbo Pascal program for the analysis of sedimentation equilibrium centrifugation data produced by absorbance optical systems is described. The user may enter data from a scan of absorbance versus distance from the centre of rotation, via a graphics tablet (or ASCII file). This is subsequently manipulated to yield an apparent weight average molecular weight for the given sample. Plots of ln (absorbance) versus (radius2) may also be produced. The method described uses readily available computational equipment requiring only a graphics tablet in addition to an IBM PC compatible computer. This technique and the software developed have been used to investigate the molecular weight range of two International Humic Substances Society (IHSS) reference samples from the Suwannee River.  相似文献

Tlg1p and Tlg2p, members of the syntaxin family of SNAREs in yeast, have been implicated in both endocytosis and the retention of late Golgi markers. We have investigated the functions of these and the other endocytic syntaxins Pep12p and Vam3p. Remarkably, growth is possible in the absence of all four proteins. In the absence of the others, Pep12p and Tlg1p can each create endosomes accessible to the endocytic tracer dye FM4-64. However, although Pep12p is required for the ligand-induced internalization of the alpha factor receptor and its passage via Pep12p-containing membranes to the vacuole, Tlg1p is not. In contrast, Tlg1p is required for the efficient localization of the catalytic subunit of chitin synthase III (Chs3p) to the bud neck, a process that involves endocytosis and polarized delivery of Chs3p. In wild-type cells, internalized Chs3p cofractionates with Tlg1p and Tlg2p, and in a strain lacking the other endocytic syntaxins, either Tlg1p or Tlg2p is sufficient for correct localization of the enzyme. Pep12p is neither necessary nor sufficient for this process. We conclude that there are two endocytic routes in yeast that can operate independently and that Tlg1p is located at the junction of one of these with the polarized exocytic pathway.  相似文献

Despite improvement in early diagnosis, surgical techniques, and general patient care, most deaths of cancer patients result from metastases. Recent studies have revealed that cytokines produced by cancer cells or by stromal cells play an important role into development the cancer metastasis. The formation of a cancer metastasis involves several major steps: 1) extensive vascularization; 2) local invasion; 3) adherence either to capillary endothelial cells or to subendothelial basement membrane; 4) extravasation; and 5) proliferation. In colon cancer, several cytokines such as growth factors, inflammatory cytokines, and angiogenic factors have been confirmed to be involved in each step of metastasis. This paper summarizes the involvement of cytokines in the development of invasion and metastasis in colon cancer.  相似文献

The recent literature dealing with the redox mechanism of the lead-acid cell positive electrode is reviewed. The basis electrochemistry of lead dioxide in its various polymorphic modifications and states of subdivision is considered in relation to the important aspects of electrode technology of which the major industrial application of the material is the conventional lead-acid cell. The proposed mechanism of the reduction (discharge) of lead dioxide in various acidic solutions are considered in relation to the present state of electrode kinetic theory. The reverse reaction by which lead dioxide is formed and the parasitic intrusion of the self discharge are dealt with as a precursor to the total cyclic process. It is concluded that in a number of respects the mechanisms proposed do not adequately represent the totality of the experimental observations. Such shortcomings are emphasized and extensions to present research are proposed.  相似文献

The creep and creep fracture behavior of two hot-pressed aluminas are presented, for both flexural and tensile testing. Steady-state power-law creep is observed with a stress exponent of about 2 for each material. Three distinct fracture regimes are found. At high stress in flexure, fracture occurs by slow crack growth with a high stress dependence of the failure time. At intermediate stresses, in both flexure and tension, creep fracture occurs by multiple microcracking after modest strains. Failure times exhibit a modest stress dependence (stress exponent of 2.5 in tension and 3 in flexure), with a constant failure strain equal to 0.09. The failure times are considerably longer in flexure than in tension, because of the constraint imposed on crack growth by the bending geometry. We conclude that flexure cannot be used for creep lifetime assessment, even in simple, single-phase materials such as Al2O3. At low stresses, in tension, failure also exhibits a modest stress dependence but with a much higher failure strain. The material shows the onset of super-plastic behavior.  相似文献

This study investigated the physiological responses and limitations to a simulated search and rescue scenario in a high-rise building under ambient conditions. Sixteen firefighters performed the scenario under four conditions: standard duration breathing apparatus (SDBA) and 45 mm hose; extended duration breathing apparatus (EDBA) and 45 mm hose; SDBA and 70 mm hose; EDBA and 70 mm hose. Core temperature, skin temperature and heart rate were monitored. In four of 32 trials the casualty was rescued; the remainder of the trials were terminated for safety, high core temperature or shortage of air. Final core temperature and heart rate were higher in the EDBA (39.1 degrees C; 72% heart rate reserve (HRR)) than SDBA conditions (38.6 degrees C; 67%HRR). No differences were observed between hose sizes. The scenario proved too onerous to complete successfully in the majority of cases. Replacing SDBA with EDBA eliminates air supply as a limiting factor, but brings with it challenges of managing thermal strain.  相似文献
