10 Gbit/s optical soliton transmission over 7200 km by using amonolithically integrated MQW-DFB-LD/MQW-EA modulator light source

The authors demonstrate 10 Gbit/s optical soliton transmission in a recirculating loop through the use of a monolithically integrated MQW-DFB-LD/MQW-EA modulator light source. The timing jitter due to the Gordon-Haus effect is successfully reduced by the optical bandpass filters conventionally used in the cascaded EDFAs to avoid the accumulation of amplified spontaneous emission. The transmission distance of 7200 km is achieved at a bit error rate of 10^-9     

Chronic herpes simplex encephalitis initially presenting with persistent myoclonus

A 59-year-old female patient with atypical chronic herpes simplex encephalitis was reported. Initial symptom was persistent myoclonus involving the trunk and limb muscles, and later lateral gaze palsy to the left side, cerebellar ataxia, consciousness disturbance and other brainstem symptoms including absence of corneal and gag reflex and vocal cord palsy developed. The patient was successfully treated with high dose of acyclovir. Electroencephalogram was normal in the initial stage but later showed diffuse slow waves. Although CT scan and MRI showed no abnormal finding in the cerebral cortex, brainstem lesion was observed on PD weighted image of MRI. Lumbar puncture yielded a clear cerebrospinal fluid, with slightly elevated protein, increased lymphocytes, and elevated titer of herpes simplex virus type I. The serological data, albumin ratio (10.3), antibody index (12.3) and antibody ratio (7.1) were consistent with herpes simplex encephalitis. Ten days' administration of acyclovir, 1,200 mg a day and repeated three times, was prominently effective for the myoclonus and consciousness disturbance. A diagnosis of chronic herpes simplex encephalitis initially presenting with brainstem encephalitis was made. Judging from the clinical and EEG findings, the brainstem lesion was initially thought to be a cause of myoclonus in this case. However, somatosensory evoked potential (SPE) of both upper and lower extremities revealed enlarged amplitude (giant SEP), and long loop reflex was enhanced (C-reflex) on the left. Giant SEP and C-reflex imply cerebral cortex as the origin of the myoclonus. Brainstem inflammatory lesion might have involved the ascending inhibitory system, thus disinhibiting the cortical sensorimotor area and causing cortical myoclonus.     

Halo congenital nevus undergoing spontaneous regression. Involvement of T-cell immunity in involution and presence of circulating anti-nevus cell IgM antibodies

BACKGROUND: Halo congenital nevus is a condition in which halo formation is associated with congenital nevocellular nevi. Although several theories have been proposed, the immunologic mechanisms of halo formation and concomitant nevus regression still remain unclear. We presented immunologic findings in a case of halo congenital nevus with unique histologic location of inflammatory cells. OBSERVATIONS: Histologically, the present case of halo congenital nevus undergoing spontaneous regression showed a marked inflammatory infiltrate with remnants of original nevus cell nests. In the infiltrating T cells, CD8+ cells outnumbered CD4+ cells and the infiltrate of natural killer cells was not substantial. Direct and indirect immunofluorescence studies demonstrated the presence of IgM antibodies against nevus cells as well as melanoma cells and cultured melanocytes in the patient's serum. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that both T-cell-mediated immunity and IgM antibodies may be involved in the regression of halo congenital nevus. However, it is important to point out that our results may simply be epiphenomena and not directly responsible for the destruction of nevus cells.     

Light scattering studies on crystallization in polyethylene terephthalate

The light scattering from the spherulites of polyethylene terephthalate grown near the glass transition temperature has been investigated. The Hv scattering profiles can be reproduced by the sum of the ideal spherulite scattering with the distribution of spherulite radius and the isotropic scattering from randomly oriented crystallites. The ratio of optical anisotropies in the isotropic scattering to the ideal spherulite scattering is obtained by the method established to eliminate the effects of the number density of spherulites and the coefficient depending on the experimental conditions. It is found that the anisotropy ratio is almost independent of the crystallization time and of temperature above 106 °C, while it is larger at a crystallization temperature of 103 °C. The spherulitic structure is discussed in terms of the anisotropy ratio.     

Hydroliquefaction of low-sulfur coals using iron carbonyl complexes—Sulfur as catalysts

Hydroliquefaction of low-sulfur Australian coals (Wandoan and Yallourn) was studied using iron carbonyl complexes as catalyst. The addition of Fe(CO)₅ (2.8 wt% Fe of coal) increased coal conversion from 48.6 to 85.2% for Wandoan coal, and from 36.7 to 69.7% for Yallourn coal in 1-methylnaphthalene at 425°C under an initial hydrogen pressure of 50 kg cm^?2. When molecular sulfur was added to iron carbonyls (Fe(CO)₅, Fe₂(CO)₉ and Fe₃(CO)₁₂), higher coal converions ( > 92%) and higher oil yields (>46%) were obtained, along with an increase in the amount of hydrogen transferred to coal from the gas phase (0.2 to 2.8%, d.a.f. coal basis). In the liquefaction studies using a hydrogen donor solvent, tetralin, Fe(CO)₅S catalyst increased the amount of hydrogen absorbed from the gaseous phase and decreased the amount of naphthalene dehydrogenated from tetralin. The direct hydrogen transfer reaction from molecular hydrogen to coal fragment radicals seems to be a major reaction pathway. Organic sulfur compounds, dimethyldisulfide and benzothiophene, and inorganic FeS₂ and NiS were found to be good sulfur sources to Fe(CO)₅. From X-ray diffraction analyses of liquefaction residues, it is concluded that Fe(CO)₅ was converted into pyrrhotite (Fe_1?xS) when sulfur was present, but into Fe₃O₄ in the absence of sulfur.     

Interconnected power systems with superconducting magnetic energy storage

The objective of this work is to discuss the concept of back‐to‐back interconnection systems with energy storage, especially with a Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) incorporated into a back‐to‐back DC link. In this case, each converter of the back‐to‐back system is used as a power conditioning system for the SMES coils. Since the AC–DC converter can be designed independently of the frequency of the power system, a two‐way switch is connected to the AC side of each converter. This two‐way switch can select the interconnected power systems. By using the two‐way switches, this system can provide the stored energy in the SMES system to each interconnected power system through two AC–DC converters. For instance, lower‐cost power of each power network can be stored through two converters during the off‐peak hours and made available for dispatch to each power network during periods of demand peak. Then this system increases the reliability of electric power networks and enables the economical operations depending on the power demand. This paper describes the unique operations of the back‐to‐back interconnection with SMES and discuses the optimal SMES configuration for a 300‐MW‐class back‐to‐back interconnection. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Keratinocyte differentiation is induced by cell-permeant ceramides and its proliferation is promoted by sphingosine

Antibody titres against Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax were examined using the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) for 183 Gidra-speaking adults and adolescents in four ecologically different villages of lowland Papua New Guinea. The findings highlight that 1) in Gidraland P. falciparum was more prevalent than P. vivax, 2) the proportion of antibody titres of 1:64 or higher markedly differed among the villages, ranging from 35.3% to 100% for males and from 31.6% to 100% for females, and 3) in the two villages with high prevalences, these were higher among males than females. The inter-village and sex differences can be largely explained by microenvironmental conditions and behavioural patterns of the population. The population-based analyses of this study intend to contribute to a better understanding of the prevalence of malaria in human-environment settings and thus to the planning of malaria prevention.     

30 GHz pulse train generation from a multiquantum well electroabsorption intensity modulator

Stable optical pulse trains with repetition rates as high as 20-30 GHz have been successfully generated at 1.55 mu m from an InGaAs/InAlAs multiquantum well electroabsorption modulator for the first time.<>     

Possibility of superconductivity with highT c in La-Sr-Nb-O system

We prepared La-Sr-Nb-O system samples both in bulk form and as a film, with sharp resistive transitions at temperatures of 228–323 K, depending on the annealing conditions. The sharp resistive transitions might be attributable to superconductivity. Magnetic ordering was observed over a narrow temperature range around 40 K for some of the samples.     

Characterization of Silicon Carbide–Silicon Nitride Composite Ultrafine Particles Synthesized Using a CO2 Laser by Silicon-29 Magic Angle Spinning NMR and ESR

The structure of silicon carbide–silicon nitride (SiC–Si₃N₄) composite particles synthesized using a CO₂ laser was studied by magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR). The structure around Si atoms changed by introducing N. C atoms around Si were substituted by N atoms, and N-rich configurations around Si atoms increased stepwise as the N content increased. The low N content composite particles consisted of mainly SiC phase containing dissolved N. N atoms were partly present in β-SiC microcrystal and partly in the grain boundary layer in the particle. N atoms were tetrahedrally surrounded by four Si atoms in β-SiC microcrystal and were trivalent state bonded to three Si atoms in the grain boundary layer. The high N content particles consisted of SiC, Si₃N₄, and amorphous phases, whose amount depended on N content.
