Invasive aquatic macrophytes in Lake Victoria including water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) exhibit periodic cyclical patterns of decline and proliferation with attendant ecological and economic impacts. This study aimed to monitor the extent of macrophytes and other invasive weeds on Lake Victoria to establish their impact on fisheries. The study employed a combination of remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) techniques to estimate the coverage of water hyacinth and other invasive macrophytes. Data on fish landings and their respective market values were acquired from the Electronic Fish Market Information Service (EFMIS) database, which is hosted by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI). Analysis of consistent temporal satellite data showed that the weeds frequently cover sheltered bays and river mouths. These areas of Winam Gulf had higher coverage (average 5000?ha) of macrophytes than the open waters (<200?ha). The proliferation of the invasive weeds showed fluctuations over the study period reaching the highest peak between September and November 2016. Other aquatic plants that have invaded the littoral areas of Lake Victoria include Egeria densa, Ceratophyllum demersum and Potamogeton spp. Increased coverage of macrophytes was found to be correlated inversely with the commercially important tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, but not with other species. The study concludes that there is a need for sustained monitoring of the invasive macrophytes alongside ecosystem modelling studies using the available time series data to clearly identify the ecological factors that drive water hyacinth dynamics and predict more precisely its impact on the fishery.  相似文献

In recent years the incorporation of ZnO as a semiconductor into other catalysts, for enhancing photodegradation processes, has gained attention. This paper describes the synthesis of a blend of metal oxide (TiO2/ZnO) photocatalyst and subsequent testing of the catalyst for the degradation of phenol in an annular photoreactor. The concentration of phenol before and after degradation was determined using Ultra-Violet-Spectroscopy (UV-Vis). Calcined TiO2/ZnO composite material with a mass loading ratio of 1: 1 exhibited the highest percentage phenol removal compared to the unblended TiO2 and ZnO systems at pH 7.2 and temperature of 25°C. It was shown that about 98% phenol degradation could be achieved at initial phenol concentration of 10; 20 and 50 ppm, except for 100 ppm which gave less than 50% degradation. Thus, TiO2/ZnO blend as photocatalyst can be used for degradation of phenol in water. The pseudo-first order reaction kinetics fitted well the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model in almost all concentration ranges tested.  相似文献

We extend previous work that addressed the problem of color changes on reflective surfaces resulting from changes in the daylight spectrum. In that work, we constrained the illuminants to a family represented by the Wien approximation to Planck's formula in order to derive a function of the three camera outputs that is invariant to daylight changes. In this work, we show that the constraint on the form of the illuminants can be relaxed and that a much more general form is permissible. We use principal components analysis on the logarithm of the illumination to represent the CIE standard in the more general form and show that the result closely represents the standard. We recalculate the exponent used in the invariant for our camera from the extended theory and obtain a result that duplicates the one found by empirical means used in our previous work.  相似文献

Fe(3)O(4) coated polypyrrole (PPy) magnetic nanocomposite was prepared via in situ polymerization of pyrrole monomer for the removal of highly toxic Cr(VI). Structure and morphology of the prepared nanocomposite were characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffraction pattern, Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies confirmed that the nanocomposite is magnetic in nature. Up to 100% adsorption was found with 200mg/L Cr(VI) aqueous solution at pH 2. Adsorption of Cr(VI) on the surface of the adsorbent was confirmed by the ATR-FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS studies also suggested that ion exchange and reduction on the surface of the nanocomposite may be the possible mechanism for Cr(VI) removal by the PPy/Fe(3)O(4) nanocomposite. Adsorption results showed that Cr(VI) removal efficiency by the nanocomposite decreased with an increase in pH. Adsorption kinetics was best described by the pseudo-second-order rate model. Isotherm data fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamic study revealed that the adsorption process is endothermic and spontaneous in nature. Desorption experiment showed that in spite of the very poor recovery of the adsorbed Cr(VI); the regenerated adsorbent can be reused successfully for two successive adsorption-desorption cycles without appreciable loss of its original capacity.  相似文献

The effect of cellulose-derivatives and emulsifiers on the creep-recovery behaviour of gluten-free dough prepared from gelatinised cassava starch and sorghum was studied. Cellulose treated doughs, except the treatment with 2.4% w/w fwb CMC, had lower resistances to deformation (range 10–33%) than emulsifier-treated doughs (range 3–13%). The higher elastic recovery of emulsifier-treated doughs corresponded to lower compliances and higher zero shear viscosities than for doughs treated with cellulose-derivatives. Addition of egg white powder (6.7% w/w fwb) eliminated several textural defects associated with gluten-free bread. Cellulose-derivatives did not decrease crumb firmness or staling rate when compared to the control. Though increasing emulsifier concentration (from 0.4% to 2.4% w/w fwb) decreased crumb firmness, crumbs treated with 2.4% w/w fwb emulsifiers, except diacetyl tartaric acid esters of mono- and diglycerides, were weak and difficult to handle after slicing. Nevertheless, all gluten-free breads treated with 2.4% w/w fwb emulsifiers staled at a slower rate than the control.  相似文献

The present study is concerned with the sulfidation treatment of copper-containing plating sludge towards copper resource recovery by flotation of copper sulfide from treated sludge. The sulfidation treatment was carried out by contacting simulated or real copper plating sludge with Na(2)S solution for a period of 5 min to 24 h. The initial molar ratio of S(2-) to Cu(2+) (S(2-) to Me(2+) in the case of real sludge) was adjusted to 1.00, 1.25 or 1.50, while the solid to liquid ratio was set at 1:50. As a result, it was found that copper compounds were converted to various copper sulfides within the first 5 min. In the case of simulated copper sludge, CuS was identified as the main sulfidation product at the molar ratio of S(2-) to Cu(2+) of 1.00, while Cu(7)S(4) (Roxbyite) was mainly found at the molar ratios of S(2-) to Cu(2+) of 1.50 and 1.25. Based on the measurements of oxidation-reduction potential, the formation of either CuS or Cu(7)S(4) at different S(2-) to Cu(2+) molar ratios was attributed to the changes in the oxidation-reduction potential. By contrast, in the case of sulfidation treatment of real copper sludge, CuS was predominantly formed, irrespective of S(2-) to Me(2+) molar ratio.  相似文献

Results of irradiation, 1 to 3 years after treatment, are presented in 64 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in East Africans. Two types of anatomic point indices are presented. Both correlate well with the results. Prophylactic irradiation of the mediastinum and both axillae was not followed by any evident improvement of the results.  相似文献

Wastewater containing fluoride requires polishing after precipitation/coagulation treatment in order to meet stringent environmental legislation. Accordingly, adsorption characteristics of fluoride onto schwertmannite adsorbent were studied in a batch system with respect to changes in initial concentration of fluoride, equilibrium pH of sample solution, adsorbent dosage and co-existing ions. Equilibrium adsorption data were obtained at 295.6, 303 and 313 K, and are interpreted in terms of two-site Langmuir, Freundlich, Langmuir-Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, Tóth and Dubinin-Radushkevitch isotherm models. The experimental and equilibrium modeling results revealed that the capacity of schwertmannite for fluoride is high but insensitive to changes in solution temperature. An increase in equilibrium pH of sample solution reduced significantly the fluoride removal efficiency. In binary component systems, inner-sphere complex forming species had negative effects on fluoride adsorption while outer-sphere complex forming species improved slightly the fluoride removal efficiency. The schwertmannite adsorbent was regenerable and had the ability to lower the fluoride concentration to acceptable levels.  相似文献

Drag force influences both the particle suspension and solids concentration distribution in a stirred tank. The influence of drag models on the prediction of solids suspension in a tank stirred by a hydrofoil impeller was studied in the present work using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental techniques. A comparison was made between the drag models based on Reynolds number only and those that take solid volume fraction into account or those that account for the effect of the free stream turbulence. One of the drag models investigated was a function of the energy dissipation rate, and therefore, the influence of the methods of determining the energy dissipation rate on the prediction of solids suspension was investigated. It was shown that a better agreement between the CFD simulation and experimental results can be obtained using drag models based on solids volume fraction than those that are based on Reynolds number only.  相似文献
