This study evaluated relations among optimism, perceived stress management skills (PSMS), and positive mood in 46 men who had surgical treatment for localized prostate cancer. The authors found that optimism, PSMS, and positive mood scores were positively correlated. Positive mood was unrelated to demographic and disease-related control variables. In a hierarchical regression model controlling for PSMS, the relationship between optimism and positive mood became nonsignificant, whereas PSMS remained a correlate of positive mood. Results suggest that the relationship between optimism and positive mood may be mediated by belief in being able to use stress management techniques effectively. We report on extensive measurements of oxygen reduction activity of Pt and Pt-Co-Mn electrocatalysts using the rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) method. The electrocatalysts were prepared by sputtering from Pt or Pt, Co and Mn targets onto 3M's nano-structured thin film support (NSTF) structures. The area specific activity of Pt/NSTF, measured in 0.1 M HClO4 and at room temperature, is similar to that of bulk Pt. The area specific measurements show a 20 mV reduction in the Pt-Co-Mn/NSTF overpotential compared to Pt/NSTF. The corresponding kinetic gain in the area specific activity of the ternary alloy is about a factor of two. This ORR enhancement factor observed in the ternary Pt-Co-Mn/NSTF by RRDE measurements is similar to the results obtained in 50 cm2 H2/air fuel cells.  相似文献

Au, Pt, Ag, Sb, Te, In and Ge were precipitated by a salt-reducing agent reaction into the pores of Nuclepore membranes 10 to 600 nm pore size range. The precipitates form filament-like structures inside the pores and a dendritic growth on the surface. The permeation of water as a function of pore size in the Nuclepore membranes was measured by tracing the diffusion through the membrane with tritium. The results are modelled and theoretical predictions are compared with the experimentally observed kinetics for metal deposition in the membranes. Also the d.c. electrical properties of the metal precipitates were measured. The anisotropic electrical properties of these systems are dictated by the morphology of the precipitated metal on the membrane.  相似文献

We report the intercalation of lithium in LiXTiS2 corresponding to 0 ≤ x ≤ 3. Intercalation to x = 3 results in a new phase whose charge-discharge behavior displays hysteresis. This is in contrast to the behavior of LixTiS2 for 0 ≤ x ≤ 2.  相似文献

We have made scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) studies of the lattice expansion and topography of cleaved crystals of 2H-NbSe2 which were intercalated in situ with silver ions entering along one edge of the samples. The measurements confirm the high surface mobility of silver seen in earlier electrochemical studies. The expansion measurements made with optimum 2 Å resolution showed no convincing evidence of silver staging domains. Topographic images revealed noisy patches and shallow depressions on cleaved surfaces of intercalated samples. It is suggested that these depressions might represent silver-poor regions in the first intercalation layer.  相似文献

Using a large range scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) we have obtained images of the complete outer cell wall of the archaebacterium Methanospirillum hungatei, deposited on a graphite substrate and over-coated with an Au or Pt evaporated film. The width of the collapsed cylindrical sheath structure was found to be 5000 Å ± ***10%, which agrees closely with the value from previously published electron microscope (EM) studies. The double thickness of the collapsed sheath was found to be 160 Å ± 10%, which is about 20% smaller than that from the EM results. Higher resolution STM images taken on top of the collapsed sheaths show corrugations running perpendicular to the cylinder axis and having widths which are multiples of ~ 30 Å, the minimum period expected from EM studies. The height of the corrugations have a minimum value of about 4 Å. The expected 2-D crystalline structure was not seen in the STM images.  相似文献

The effects of carbon black content and crosslinking on the mechanical and electrical properties of a fluorinated elastomer, FC2178 (Dyneon Corp., Oakdale, MN), poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene), were investigated and compared to those of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). Attention was given to changes in mechanical and electrical properties of the polymers when under cyclic deformation. To describe the mechanical properties of the carbon‐filled polymers in a way that is independent of the chemical details, two mechanical models were used to fit cyclic stress–strain experiments. The linear model was used to determine the effect of crosslinking on the mechanical properties of crosslinked FC2178 films. However, when carbon black was added to the polymer films, the linear model no longer fit the data well. In particular, the cyclic stress–strain curves for carbon‐filled polymers showed non‐linear regions and displayed the characteristic of ‘memory.’ A non‐linear element was added in parallel with the existing elements of the linear model to successfully describe the effects of the added carbon black. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. French River water (Nova Scotia, Canada) was separated into six different natural organic matter (NOM) fractions, including hydrophobic acids, bases and neutrals and hydrophilic acids, bases and neutrals. The raw water, as well as each of the NOM fractions were analysed for disinfection by-product (DBP) formation potential before and after advanced oxidation with UV/TiO2 to determine the efficacy of this treatment for the removal of DBP precursors. The UV/TiO2 treatment was carried out with a nanostructured thin film (NSTF), coated with TiO2 which is compared with the use of a TiO2 suspension. For the raw river water, removals of total trihalomethane formation potential (TTHMFP) and total haloacetic acid formation potential (THAA9FP) were found to be approximately 20% and 90%, respectively, with 50 mJ/cm2 UV exposure and 1 mg/L TiO2. For the fractionated samples, approximately 75% of both trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA) precursors were found to be associated with the hydrophobic acid fraction. For this individual fraction the same UV/TiO2 treatments exhibited approximately 20-25% removal of both TTHMFP and THAA9FP, suggesting that the fractionation process may have affected the treatability of HAA precursors or may have altered the results of the oxidation processes.  相似文献
