Romanian policy makers have to perceive that human intervention on river basins land cover is influencing rainfall-runoff relation and the used methodology cannot accurately estimate watershed surface flow transformations. Global water cycles and energy fluxes understanding is leading to better predictions of land atmosphere interaction and local hydro-climates evolution. The water transfer time determination from rainfall to runoff needs accurate measurements of river basins hydrological parameters. Here, we analyzed and compared the lag time value results of two different methodologies (curve number and rational methodology) used for 54 Romanian small catchment areas study. The focus of this paper is the lag time evaluation and interpretation for an effective implementation of the best methodology approach in the Romanian geographical space. Our research in small river basins was developed using remote sensing technology maps, GIS and environmental datasets in combination with field work on every drainage basin in order to assess the specific morphological features and validate the land cover typology. We found that Soil Conservation Service - Curve Number (SCS-CN) method is widely used according to USA landscape features classification, but not necessarily applicable to Romanian river basins characteristics. Our results show how the official Romanian rational methodology national standard (RNS) can be improved and the limits of SCS-CN method.
Crossover designs are an extremely useful tool to investigators, and group sequential methods have proven highly proficient at improving the efficiency of parallel group trials. Yet, group sequential methods and crossover designs have rarely been paired together. One possible explanation for this could be the absence of a formal proof of how to strongly control the familywise error rate in the case when multiple comparisons will be made. Here, we provide this proof, valid for any number of initial experimental treatments and any number of stages, when results are analyzed using a linear mixed model. We then establish formulae for the expected sample size and expected number of observations of such a trial, given any choice of stopping boundaries. Finally, utilizing the four-treatment, four-period TOMADO trial as an example, we demonstrate that group sequential methods in this setting could have reduced the trials expected number of observations under the global null hypothesis by over 33%. 相似文献
Reviews the book by Baruss (see record 2003-02669-000), which reviews the experimental and phenomenological research on alterations of consciousness, ranging from sleep and dreaming to mystical and near-death experience. The reviewer suggests there is a clear agenda announced by the book's subtitle, "An Empirical Analysis for Social Scientists." In the view of Baruss, all too often in states of consciousness research a preoccupation with theory has kept investigators from full engagement with the actual data. The book provides readable and at times appropriately controversial discussions of empirical literature on dreaming and lucid dreams, daydreaming and fantasy proneness, hypnosis, dissociative identity disorder, shamanism and possession states, psychedelic drug research, parapsychology, trance-chanelling and mediumship, the alien abduction syndrome, classical mystical experience, out-of-body and near-death experiences, and recent attempts by MacDonald and others to assess individual differences in spirituality through multifactor questionnaires. However, the reviewer believes that the breadth of coverage of both recent and past research is too often highly selective, and that the author's rejection of theory is both questionable in itself and more illusion than reality. The biochemical maturation of the lung in late gestation and in the young animal is regulated by glucocorticoids. The present study was aimed at dissociating the different glucocorticoid receptor sites involved in these regulatory functions. The obese Zucker rat was selected as a model for this study as it exhibits hypersensitivity to glucocorticoid hormone action by virtue of its elevated receptor numbers and activity. Two synthetic steroid analogues were administered to obese animals; RU28362, a specific type II receptor agonist, and the type II antagonist RU486. RU28362 promoted a strong catabolic effect, which was associated with reduced food intake and the abolition of growth in the rats. The agonist, RU28362, attenuated developmental increases in antioxidant enzyme activities, and altered the growth of the tissue. At the age studied, development of the lung phosphatidylcholine (PC) system was almost complete, but RU28362 increased disaturated PC 16:0/16:0 concentrations by almost 2-fold, and altered the molecular composition of total pulmonary PC. RU486 attenuated the growth of the rats and reduced their food intake. Treatment with the type II antagonist attenuated lung growth and increased the activities of pulmonary copper zinc (Cu/Zn) and manganese (Mn) superoxide dismutases. RU486 had no effect on lung PC concentrations and molecular composition. The data suggest a role for type I glucocorticoid receptors in the regulation of the antioxidant enzyme system in the lung, as type II antagonism will channel endogenous glucocorticoid binding to the type I site. Type II receptor binding would appear to play a role in regulating the lung PC content. 相似文献
Self-control is demonstrated when a less desirable immediate outcome is chosen to ensure a substantially better future. In a novel animal analogue of this situation, primary reinforcement was delivered in both the initial and terminal links of a concurrent chain schedule. Rats made initial link choices between equal amounts of ethanol-free or ethanol-containing milk. Choosing the ethanol-free reinforcer resulted in delivery of the larger terminal link reinforcer and was thus analogous to self-control. Self-control decreased as the delay between initial and terminal links increased. The results have implications for human choice situations where decisions are made between two immediately available reinforcement alternatives each associated with a different delayed outcome.
