Electrical linewidth test structures fabricated in monocrystallinefilms for reference-material applications

The physical widths of reference features incorporated into electrical linewidth test structures patterned in films of monocrystalline silicon have been determined from Kelvin voltage measurements. The films in which the test structures are patterned are electrically insulated from the bulk-silicon substrate by a layer of silicon dioxide provided by SIMOX (Separation by the IMplantation of OXygen) processing. The motivation is to facilitate the development of linewidth reference materials for critical-dimension (CD) metrology-instrument calibration. The selection of the (110) orientation of the starting silicon and the orientation of the structures' features relative to the crystal lattice enable a lattice-plane-selective etch to generate reference-feature properties of rectangular cross section and atomically planar sidewalls. These properties are highly desirable for CD applications in which feature widths are certified with nanometer-level uncertainty for use by a diverse range of CD instruments. End applications include the development and calibration of new generations of CD instruments directed at controlling processes for manufacturing devices having sub-quarter-micrometer features     

Hans H. Strupp (1921-2006).

Presents an obituary for Hans Hermann Strupp, internationally acclaimed clinical psychologist and psychotherapy research pioneer, who died October 5, 2006, in Nashville, Tennessee, following a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Hans Strupp elicited unusual respect across disciplines, including psychiatry and medicine, and across national boundaries in numerous countries. Hans was truly a person of great distinction; he brought honor to his friends, his discipline, his university, his nation, and his family. Biphasic effects of intraaccumbens mu-opioid peptide agonist DAMGO on locomotor activities

The effects of bilateral microinjections of mu-opioid receptor agonist DAMGO (0.00, 0.01, 0.1, or 1.0 microgram/side) were tested in rats for 120 min in activity monitors. The horizontal movement, rearing, and stereotypy times in seconds were measured during 12 consecutive 10-min time blocks. DAMGO (0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 microgram) resulted in biphasic effects, inhibition followed by activation for each of the three measures. These data replicate the behavioral effects of ICV DAMGO except that the duration of the behavioral effects were longer with Acb injections.     

Carboxylation of epoxides to beta-keto acids in cell extracts of Xanthobacter strain Py2

A novel enzymatic reaction involved in the metabolism of aliphatic epoxides by Xanthobacter strain Py2 is described. Cell extracts catalyzed the CO2-dependent carboxylation of propylene oxide (epoxypropane) to form acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate. The time courses of acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate formaton indicate that acetoacetate is the primary product of propylene oxide carboxylation and that beta-hydroxybutyrate is a secondary product formed by the reduction of acetoacetate. Analogous C5 carboxylation products were identified with 1,2-epoxybutane as the substrate. In the absence of CO2, propylene oxide and 1,2-epoxybutane were isomerized to form acetone and methyl ethyl ketone, respectively, as dead-end products. The carboxylation of short-chain epoxides to beta-keto acids is proposed to serve as the physiological reaction for the metabolism of aliphatic epoxides in Xanthobacter strain Py2.     

Development and simulation studies of an unsteady state biofilter model for the treatment of cyclic air emissions of an α‐pinene gas stream

This paper describes the development and simulation of an unsteady state biofilter model used to predict dynamic behaviour of cyclically‐operated biofilters and compares it with experimental results obtained from three, parallel, bench‐scale biofilters treating both periodically fluctuating concentrations and constant concentrations of an α‐pinene‐laden gas stream. The dynamic model, using kinetic parameters estimated from the constant concentration biofilter, was able to predict the performance of cyclic biofilters operating at short cycle periods (ie, in the order of minutes and hours). Steady state kinetic data from a constant concentration biofilter can be used to predict unsteady state biofilter operation. At a 24 h cycle period, the dynamic model compared well with experimental results. For long cycle periods (ie, hours and days), removal efficiency decreased after periods of non‐loading: the longer the period of non‐loading, the poorer the biofilter's performance at the re‐commencement of pollutant loading. At longer time scales the model did not effectively predict transient behaviour, as adsorption and changes in kinetic parameters were not accounted for. Modelling results showed that similar biofiltration performance for the cyclic and constant concentration biofiltration of α‐pinene is expected for biofilters operating solely in the first order kinetics regime. Poorer performance for cyclic biofilters following Monod kinetics spanning the entire kinetics range is expected as the cycle amplitude increases. The most important parameters affecting the performance of a cyclically‐operated biofilter with short cycle periods are: amplitude of cyclic fluctuations, C_{g, max}/C_g, relative value of the half‐saturation constant in the Monod expression, K_s, and effective diffusivity of α‐pinene in the biofilm, D_e.
