Fiber cross sections for use in textiles and composites are becoming more and more complex. Shape impacts fiber or filaments properties and therefore the yarn and fabric characteristics. This paper presents the influence of the fiber cross section on the fabric surface characteristics. The material used was polyester staple fibers, of four different shapes: round, scalloped oval, cruciform and hexachannel. All fibers had the same cut length with different fineness. Yarns obtained from these fibers had nominally the same yarn count, torsion value and structure. Plain jersey fabrics were knitted from each of the yarns under identical conditions and then relaxed prior to testing. Friction behavior was evaluated and a roughness-friction criterion developed. An indirect measurement of the real area of contact was obtained in order to provide roughness and friction properties. The influence of fiber cross section on yarn bending rigidity and on the state of the knitted fabric surface was characterized.  相似文献

Lithium chloride was added to systematically alter the phase separation behavior, and hence, the nature of urea phase connectivity, in a series of plaques based on molded flexible polyurethane foam formulations. The plaques prepared were found to possess varied levels of urea phase connectivity that was examined at different length scales using several characterization techniques. SAXS, TEM, and t‐AFM were used to show that addition of LiCl systematically reduced the formation of the urea aggregate structures typically observed in flexible polyurethane foam formulations and thus led to a loss in urea phase connectivity at the macrolevel. SAXS, DSC, and DMA revealed that formulations with and without LiCl exhibited similar interdomain spacings and soft segment glass transitions, suggesting that incorporation of LiCl did not prevent the plaques from undergoing partial microphase separation. WAXS demonstrated that addition of LiCl led to a loss in the local ordering of the hard segments within the microdomains, i.e., it led to a reduction of microlevel connectivity or the regularity in segmental packing of the urea phase. High‐magnification t‐AFM images showed that increasing the LiCl content dispersed the urea component more homogeneously and in a more uniform manner in the polyol matrix, and thus altered the connectivity of the urea phase at the microdomain level. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An important problem in WDM network design is to construct a logical topology and determine an optimal routing over that topology. Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) formulations to generate optimal solutions for this problem have been presented. Such formulations are computationally intractable, even for moderate sized networks. A standard approach is to decouple the problem of logical topology design and the problem of routing the traffic on this logical topology. Heuristics for finding the logical topology exist and a straight-forward linear program (LP), based on the node-arc formulation can be used to solve the routing problem over a given logical topology. We have found that such LP formulations become computationally infeasible for large networks. In this paper, we present a new formulation, based on the arc-chain representation, for optimally routing the specified traffic over a given logical topology to minimize the congestion of the network. We have used the revised simplex method incorporating an implicit column generation technique, and exploited the special Generalized Upper Bounding structure as well as the possibility of eta-factorization for efficiently updating the dual variables and finding the solution. Experimental results on a number of networks demonstrate the suitability of this approach.  相似文献

One hundred twenty-seven 7-, 9-, and 11-year-old children were presented large or small samples of own-gender enhancing or other-gender enhancing observations. Children read arguments based on the observations, rated argument intelligence, judged the number of other children to whom the observations could be generalized, and provided verbal justifications for their judgments. Own-gender reasoning biases declined with age; these declines were, however, partially accounted for by declines in the strength of self-reported gender affiliations. Reasoning biases-demonstrated by problem-to-problem shifts in reasoning quality-were constrained by sample size, indicating a modest degree of rationality even among 7-year-olds. Specifically, biases co-existed with reasonably extensive generalization from large samples of other-gender evidence. Children were thus able to satisfy motivations for own-gender favoritism and reason in accord with the law of large numbers. Several explanations of the findings-based on changes in the salience of gender, multiple classification skills, and the ability to reason independently from beliefs-are offered. In this paper theoretical and experimental investigations have been carried out to determine the effect of an asymmetrical V-shaped notch on the load carrying capacity of eccentrically loaded columns. The depth of the notch was kept constant whereas the notch angle, notch root radius; eccentricity of loading and length of the column was varied. It has been concluded that an asymmetrically placed V-notch decreases the load carrying capacity of the column. The load carrying capacity is not affected appreciably upto a notch angle of approx. 90°, but beyond 90° it increases. The load carrying capacity of the column also increases as the notch root radius increases but it decreases as the eccentricity of load and slenderness ratio increase.  相似文献

In WDM networks, path protection has emerged as a widely accepted technique for providing guaranteed survivability of network traffic. However, it requires allocating resources for backup lightpaths, which remain idle under normal fault-free conditions. In this paper, we introduce a new design strategy for survivable network design, which guarantees survivability of all ongoing connections that requires significantly fewer network resources than protection based techniques. In survivable routing, the goal is to find a Route and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) such that the logical topology remains connected for all single link failures. However, even if the logical topology remains connected after any single link fault, it may not have sufficient capacity to support all the requests for data communication, for all single fault scenarios. To address this deficiency, we have proposed two independent but related problem formulations. To handle our first formulation, we have presented an Integer Linear Program (ILP) that augments the concept of survivable routing by allowing rerouting of sub-wavelength traffic carried on each lightpath and finding an RWA that maximizes the amount of traffic that can be supported by the network in the presence of any single link failure. To handle our second formulation, we have proposed a new design approach that integrates the topology design and the RWA in such a way that the resulting logical topology is able to handle the entire set of traffic requests after any single link failure. For the second problem, we have first presented an ILP formulation for optimally designing a survivable logical topology, and then proposed a heuristic for larger networks. Experimental results demonstrate that this new approach is able to provide guaranteed bandwidth, and is much more efficient in terms of resource utilization, compared to both dedicated and shared path protection schemes.  相似文献
