The classic hypoglossal transfer to the facial nerve is invariably followed by complications caused by tongue atrophy. In 1984, Terzis introduced the "baby-sitter" procedure which involved a formal cross-facial procedure, in addition to partial neurectomy of the hypoglossal nerve, and an end-to-side coaptation with the ipsilateral facial nerve. This reported study provides, for the first time, quantification of the number of hypoglossal motor fibers needed to successfully restore eye sphincter function, using an end-to-side coaptation with preservation of the tongue. Thirty adult Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into six groups: control, denervated, perineurial window, 20 percent partial neurectomy (PN), 40 percent PN, and 80 percent PN. The procedure involves interposing a nerve graft (saphenous) between the partially severed XII nerve and the upper zygomatic branch of the facial nerve. Evaluation of the behavioral data (blink reflex) revealed good-to-superb return of the blinking mechanism in the 40 percent group, without significant tongue atrophy. Electrophysiologic data in the 40 percent neurectomy group demonstrated superiority to the other groups. Quantitative axonal morphometry of the coaptation sites and graft, as well as motor end-plates of the orbicularis oculi muscle and tongue showed the 40 percent partial neurectomy group to be the optimal group.  相似文献

Five landraces of Greek common dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), were analysed for thirteen physico‐chemical and eighteen sensory variables. Brightness, acceptance, odour and hardness were the most important sensory variables for the overall acceptability of the cooked product. Application of principal component analysis revealed a rather weak relationship between the sensory attributes and the physico‐chemical variables. However, a certain grouping of cultivars with corresponding properties [(PC1 vs. PC2, Kastoria with saltiness, hardness, grassiness, intensity, protein and metal; Byzitsa bushy with fat, odour and sourness; Ksanthi and Belestino with tenaciousness, chroma, pH and overall impression), (PC1 vs. PC3 Byzitsa bushy with odour and acridness; Ksanthi with metal, hardness and pH; Kastoria with colour, protein and intensity)] was made. On the contrary, cluster analysis showed a much more satisfactory grouping of dry bean varieties based on their geographical origin. The multiple regression equation explained 72.3% of the variation in total acceptance of dry beans. The relative importance of brightness, acceptance, smell and hardness in predicting the overall impression of dry beans was 13%, 13.7%, 26% and 10%, respectively. These results may indicate that smell, brightness and acceptance are the most important factors determining dry bean total acceptability, so effort should be directed at improving these attributes in an attempt to satisfy consumer experience.  相似文献

We investigate entanglement formation in antiferromagnetic and mixed anisotropic, finite, one-dimensional Heisenberg chains with and without the presence of a uniform magnetic field. The ridge logistic regression has successfully been used in text categorization problems and it has been shown to reach the same performance as the Support Vector Machine but with the main advantage of computing a probability value rather than a score. However, the dense solution of the ridge makes its use unpractical for large scale categorization. On the other side, LASSO regularization is able to produce sparse solutions but its performance is dominated by the ridge when the number of features is larger than the number of observations and/or when the features are highly correlated. In this paper, we propose a new model selection method which tries to approach the ridge solution by a sparse solution. The method first computes the ridge solution and then performs feature selection. The experimental evaluations show that our method gives a solution which is a good trade-off between the ridge and LASSO solutions.  相似文献

We explore synergies among mobile robots and wireless sensor networks in environmental monitoring through a system in which robotic data mules collect measurements gathered by sensing nodes. A proof-of-concept implementation demonstrates that this approach significantly increases the lifetime of the system by conserving energy that the sensing nodes otherwise would use for communication.  相似文献

Sensory studies of four fingers were performed on 72 patients with early (distal motor latency <4.2 ms) carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and on 43 control subjects. Results demonstrate that sensory studies of digit 4 yields the highest sensitivity (88%) for diagnosis of early CTS. The sensitivity of digit 1, digit 2, and digit 3 was 61%, 22%, and 50%, respectively.  相似文献
