This article considers whether thinking about journalism's present set of challenges is best served by the notion of “crisis.” It argues that adopting such a notion to explain a diverse set of technological, political, economic, social, occupational, moral, and legal circumstances misses an opportunity to recognize how contingent and differentiated the futures of journalism might be. It also raises critical questions about how institutions deal with uncertainty at their core, obscuring a fuller understanding of the permutations that get eclipsed by perceiving crisis as a unitary phenomenon. 相似文献

This article considers how journalists have turned stories about the Gulf War into a forum for discussing satellite-fed technology, real-time reportage, and other issues of concern to the professional community. In focusing on the Cable News Network (CNN) and Peter Arnett, reporters have turned the Gulf War into a critical incident that helps them consider consensual notions of professional practice. 相似文献

Typically, teachers use tests to evaluate students' knowledge acquisition. In a novel experimental study, we examined whether low-stakes testing (quizzing) can be used to foster students' learning of course content in 8th grade science classes. Students received multiple-choice quizzes (with feedback); in the quizzes, some target content that would be included on the class summative assessments was tested, and some of the target content was not tested. In Experiment 1, three quizzes on the content were spaced across the coverage of a unit. Quizzing produced significant learning benefits, with between 13% and 25% gains in performance on summative unit examinations. In Experiments 2a and 2b, we manipulated the placement of the quizzing, with students being quizzed on some content prior to the lecture, quizzed on some immediately after the lecture, and quizzed on some as a review prior to the unit exam. Review quizzing produced the greatest increases in exam performance, and these increases were only slightly augmented when the items had appeared on previous quizzes. The benefits of quizzing (relative to not quizzing) persisted on cumulative semester and end-of-year exams. We suggest that the present effects reflect benefits accruing to retrieval practice, benefits that are well established in the basic literature. In this paper, we have attempted to study the steady two-dimensional hydromagnetic convective flow through porous medium and heat transfer effects. Fluid is containing dust particles and is moving under the influence of Lorentz, buoyancy, Darcy, and viscous forces. Motion is considered to be governed by the volume fraction of the dust grains and the increment of shear stress and rate of heat transfer at the surface has been analyzed. Governing equations of the problem are converted into ordinary differential equations utilizing similarity transformations. The converted differential equations are figured numerically using the MATLAB built-in technique bvp4c. The results are depicted in graphical forms for different values of the flow parameters. The findings are obtained considering the volume fraction and compared with the results of the previous paper. It is observed that the shear stress enhances with diminishing resistance and decreases for the higher values of the Hartmann number, permeability parameter, and volume fraction of the dust phase. Also, improving the Nusselt number gives a boost to thermal diffusivity. 相似文献

This article discusses the role of journalism in the disciplinary growth of the study of communication. It traces the initial role that journalism played in communication studies' development, considers how it has taken shape differently in some of the discipline's sub‐fields of inquiry, and charts how it has developed in different geographic regions. Addressing journalism's contemporary positioning around the world, the article argues that the study of communication could profit by acknowledging more fully journalism's centrality in helping keep communication studies a singular and vibrant field of academic inquiry. 相似文献
