Making it in academic psychology: Demographic and personality correlates of attainment.

Examined personality, demographic characteristics, publication rate, and citations to published work in a sample of 141 male and 55 female academic psychologists. Reputational rankings of their graduate schools and current institutions were significantly related to citations, as were components of achievement motivation. Mastery and work needs were positively related to citations, whereas competitiveness was negatively associated with the criterion. Large sex differences were found in citations, with men receiving significantly more recognition and producing at a higher rate. A model of attainment in psychology is proposed, and possible explanations for the differential attainment of the sexes are explored. Perspectives on next generation mobile

Employees in today’s enterprises are requesting their employers to allow them to work in a flexible manner. Work is no longer a place to go to but an activity to be undertaken. With developments in technology, the activity can be undertaken whenever and wherever it is convenient for the employees. Increasing demands by employees to be able to work in this way creates a tension within the enterprise as CIOs and finance officers strive to manage the costs and the infrastructure required to support this way of working. Over time, this situation will change as technology allows users to roam securely and seamlessly between networks accessing the required applications and information from a single suitably enabled device. This will tend to reduce the underlying costs as the best connection can be used. Service management will remain a challenge but become a better understood problem as the ’stove-pipe’ nature of current solutions is removed. For this change to be brought about, some enabling technologies have to be put in place. This paper considers issues surrounding next generation mobile solutions and shows how converged services can be used to deliver the vision of being able to work from any place, at any time. Consideration is given to how roaming from fixed to wireless networks can be achieved by reusing already established authentication principles that are now deployed in wide area wireless networks. In order to do this, open methods of managing user identity need to be devised and implemented and approaches to this are also discussed. The paper concludes with a consideration of some of the research challenges that remain to be solved. HP     

Gear Lubrication in Inert Gas Atmospheres

An investigation was made of the effect of inert gas atmospheres on the gear load-carrying capacity of lubricants. The experiments were performed in two types of gear test machines, using case-hardened AMS-6260 steel test gears. It was found that two mineral oils (a solvent-extracted turbine oil base stock and a USP grade white mineral oil), as well as the same oils fortified with different extreme-pressure additives, all exhibited a decided increase in load-carrying capacity when the gears were operated in an atmosphere of nitrogen or argon instead of air. On the other hand, the response of synthetic lubricants was not found to be necessarily similar. In fact, only one of the six synthetic fluids tested showed any significant increase in load-carrying capacity when the gears were operated in a nitrogen atmosphere.

Pattern A, achievement striving, and scientific merit: Does pattern A help or hinder?

Clinical observations and recent theorizing offer 2 opposing predictions about the relationship between the Type A behavior pattern and the merit of one's work: (a) Type A helps; (b) Type A hinders. To test these 2 possibilities, 118 male members of the Society of Experimental Social Psychologists completed the Jenkins Activity Survey for Health Prediction and the Work and Family Orientation Questionnaire. Ss' citation scores were derived from the Social Science Citation Index 1973–1975. Assuming that citations are a rough measure of meritorious work, results reveal that Type A behavior by men was associated with superior scientific work. Prediction of Mixer Intermodulation Levels as Function of Local Oscillator Power

During intermodulation testing with diode mixers an increase of intermodulation interference was observed due to an increase of LO power incident to the mixer. This phenomenon conflicted with the theory that increase of LO power reduces intermodulation output of the diode mixer. In these tests the intermodulation decreased as expected when the LO power was further increased. Results of a theoretical and experimental study of how the level of incident LO power affects the intermodulation output levels emanating from the mixer are presented. The predicted results lead to the following experimentally verified conclusions. 1) A drop in power at some intermodulation frequencies occurs for an increase of LO power, depending on LO operating point and order of intermodulation. 2) Power at each intermodulation frequency will repeatedly increase, reach a maximum, and then decrease as power in LO signal increases, where the number of repetitions follows the orders of intermodulation. 3) The maximum intermodulation power at low-order intermodulation frequencies occurs for higher LO power than higher order intermodulation frequencies. LO power operating point is shown to be a significant factor in mixer intermodulation consideration. Application of these results to receiver intermodulation improvement is discussed.     

An Open Question: Is Non-Ionizing Radiation a Tool for Controlling Apoptosis-Induced Proliferation?

Non-ionizing radiation is commonly used in the clinical setting, despite its known ability to trigger oxidative stress and apoptosis, which can lead to damage and cell death. Although induction of cell death is typically considered harmful, apoptosis can also be beneficial in the right context. For example, cell death can serve as the signal for new tissue growth, such as in apoptosis-induced proliferation. Recent data has shown that exposure to non-ionizing radiation (such as weak static magnetic fields, weak radiofrequency magnetic fields, and weak electromagnetic fields) is able to modulate proliferation, both in cell culture and in living organisms (for example during tissue regeneration). This occurs via in vivo changes in the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are canonical activators of apoptosis. This review will describe the literature that highlights the tantalizing possibility that non-ionizing radiation could be used to manipulate apoptosis-induced proliferation to either promote growth (for regenerative medicine) or inhibit it (for cancer therapies). However, as uncontrolled growth can lead to tumorigenesis, much more research into this exciting and developing area is needed in order to realize its promise.

Can the Parr curve help with manpower distribution and resource estimation problems?

This paper analyzes the resource utilization curve devel oped by Parr. The curve is compared with several other curves, including the Rayleigh curve, a parabola, and a trapezoid, with respect to how well they fit manpower uti lization. The evaluation is performed for several projects developed in the Software Engineering Laboratory of the 6–12 man-year variety. The conclusion drawn is that the Parr curve can be made to fit the data better than the other curves. However, because of the noise in the data, it is difficult to confirm the shape of the manpower distri bution from the data alone and therefore difficult to vali date any particular model. Also, since the parameters used in the curve are not easily calculable or estimable from known data, the curve is not effective for resource estimation.
