This paper reviews the current state of industry with regard to the introduction of software metrics. It discusses the benefits that organizations have derived from metrication, it looks at why organizations have sought to introduce metrics programmes, how they have gone about introducing those programmes and the problems that they have encountered during implementation. The review found that, on the whole, only the sanitized aspects of metrics experiences have actually been published. This seems to be especially the case with respect to practitioner resistance. Very few organizations admit to having encountered resistance during the introduction of a metrics programme. The paper also includes the results of a pilot study, conducted by the first author, which examines the attitudes that developers hold towards the introduction of software metrics. The key findings of this pilot study are that positive attitudes to metrics correlate highly with levels of education and to job satisfaction.  相似文献

Standard practice in building models in software engineering normally involves three steps: collecting domain knowledge (previous results, expert knowledge); building a skeleton of the model based on step 1 including as yet unknown parameters; estimating the model parameters using historical data. Our experience shows that it is extremely difficult to obtain reliable data of the required granularity, or of the required volume with which we could later generalize our conclusions. Therefore, in searching for a method for building a model we cannot consider methods requiring large volumes of data. This paper discusses an experiment to develop a causal model (Bayesian net) for predicting the number of residual defects that are likely to be found during independent testing or operational usage. The approach supports (1) and (2), does not require (3), yet still makes accurate defect predictions (an R 2 of 0.93 between predicted and actual defects). Since our method does not require detailed domain knowledge it can be applied very early in the process life cycle. The model incorporates a set of quantitative and qualitative factors describing a project and its development process, which are inputs to the model. The model variables, as well as the relationships between them, were identified as part of a major collaborative project. A dataset, elicited from 31 completed software projects in the consumer electronics industry, was gathered using a questionnaire distributed to managers of recent projects. We used this dataset to validate the model by analyzing several popular evaluation measures (R 2, measures based on the relative error and Pred). The validation results also confirm the need for using the qualitative factors in the model. The dataset may be of interest to other researchers evaluating models with similar aims. Based on some typical scenarios we demonstrate how the model can be used for better decision support in operational environments. We also performed sensitivity analysis in which we identified the most influential variables on the number of residual defects. This showed that the project size, scale of distributed communication and the project complexity cause the most of variation in number of defects in our model. To assess the effects of diabetes mellitus on renal osteodystrophy, we examined the database of 256 patients (45% on hemodialysis and 55% on peritoneal dialysis) who were prospectively studied in three Toronto dialysis centers between October of 1987 and 1989. All patients had serial documentation of their clinical, laboratory and risk parameters of bone disease, and completed a series of investigations that included the deferoxamine test, measurement of intact 1-84 PTH levels, and an iliac crest bone biopsy. Twenty-five percent of these patients were diabetic. When compared to non-diabetic patients, they were on dialysis for a shorter duration (2.4 +/- 0.3 vs. 4.7 +/- 0.3 years; P < 0.0002), used calcium carbonate as the only phosphate binder more frequently (40 vs. 25%; P < 0.007), and had lower parathyroid hormone levels (12 +/- 1.4 vs. 24 +/- 2.3 pmol/liter; P < 0.002). High-turnover bone disorders (that is, osteitis fibrosa and mixed disorder) were distinctly uncommon (8 vs. 33%; P < 0.01 by Fisher's exact test), while the mild (19 vs. 9%; P = NS) and the aplastic disorders (with mean stainable bone surface aluminum of 6.5 +/- 0.7%) (46 vs. 31%; P = NS) tended to be more common in diabetic patients. The prevalence of aluminum bone disease was the same in both groups (27%). Diabetic patients ingested a smaller cumulative dose of aluminum gels (3.7 +/- 0.6 vs. 9.3 +/- 1.1 kg; P < 0.005), yet had a higher rate of aluminium accumulation on bone surfaces than non-diabetic patients (1.5 +/- 0.19 vs. 0.96 +/- 0.10% per month on dialysis; P < 0.015).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Recent advances in Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have overcome the drawbacks of traditional wired and ad-hoc networks and now they are seen as a means of allowing last mile communications with quality level assurance in Future Multimedia Systems. However, new routing schemes are needed to provide end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) support for delay/loss/jitter-sensitive multimedia applications. The well-known OLSR (Optimized Link State Routing) protocol with ETX (Expected Transmission Count) metric brings many benefits to the path selection process, but has a drawback with regard to queue availability management, which reduces the system performance. This problem is caused when OLSR-EXT control messages are exchanged and the queues of mesh routers along the end-to-end communication path are overloaded. As a result, multimedia-related packets will suffer from loss/delay/jitter and the overall system performance will decrease. This paper proposes the Optimized Link State Routing-Fuzzy ETX Queue (OLSR-FEQ) protocol to overcome the limitations of OLSR-ETX regarding queue availability, QoS and QoE assurance. OLSR-FEQ optimizes network and user-based parameters by coordinating queue availability, QoS and fuzzy issues in the routing decision process as a way of allocating the best paths for multimedia applications. Performance evaluations were carried out with the Network Simulator (NS-2.34) to show the benefits of the proposed solution when compared with existing routing schemes, namely OLSR-ETX, OLSR-FLC, OLSR-MD and HWMP (IEEE 802.11s standard), regarding QoS (unsuccessful packet delivery and throughput) and QoE (PSNR, SSIM, VQM and MOS) parameters.  相似文献

(1) Background: The unusual accumulation of Na,K-ATPase complexes in the brush border membrane of choroid plexus epithelial cells have intrigued researchers for decades. However, the full range of the expressed Na,K-ATPase subunits and their relation to the microvillus cytoskeleton remains unknown. (2) Methods: RT-PCR analysis, co-immunoprecipitation, native PAGE, mass spectrometry, and differential centrifugation were combined with high-resolution immunofluorescence histochemistry, proximity ligase assays, and stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy on mouse choroid plexus cells or tissues in order to resolve these issues. (3) Results: The choroid plexus epithelium expresses Na,K-ATPase subunits α1, α2, β1, β2, β3, and phospholemman. The α1, α2, β1, and β2, subunits are all localized to the brush border membrane, where they appear to form a complex. The ATPase complexes may stabilize in the brush border membrane via anchoring to microvillar actin indirectly through ankyrin-3 or directly via other co-precipitated proteins. Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) may form part of the proposed multi-protein complexes in contrast to another membrane protein, the Na-K-2Cl cotransporter 1 (NKCC1). NKCC1 expression seems necessary for full brush border membrane accumulation of the Na,K-ATPase in the choroid plexus. (4) Conclusion: A multitude of Na,K-ATPase subunits form molecular complexes in the choroid plexus brush border, which may bind to the cytoskeleton by various alternative actin binding proteins.  相似文献

Organic/inorganic composite membranes with different inorganic heteropolyacid (HPA) additives maintain sufficient proton conductivities for atmospheric pressure elevated temperature (>100 °C) polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) operation. However, membrane and membrane electrode assembly (MEA) processing is severely curtailed because of the solubility of the HPA additives in aqueous media. Composite membranes with the HPA (phosphotungstic acid; PTA) additive rendered insoluble by ion exchanging protons with larger cations such as Cs+, NH4+, Rb+ and Tl+ were fabricated. The additive loss in aqueous media was lowered from nearly 100% (unmodified HPA) to about 5% (modified HPA). The membranes were robust, and demonstrated low H2 crossover currents of around 2 mA/cm2 for a 28 μm thick membrane. All membranes were evaluated at high temperatures and low relative humidities in an operating fuel cell. The conductivities of the composite membranes at 120 °C and 35% relative humidity were on the order of 1.6 × 10−2 S/cm.  相似文献

Recent studies provide extensive evidence for the importance of carotenoids in protecting against oxidative stress associated with a number of diseases. In particular, reactions of carotenoids with phenoxyl radicals generated by peroxidasecatalyzed one-electron metabolism of phenolic compounds may represent an important antioxidant function of carotenoids. To further our understanding of the antioxidant mechanisms of carotenoids, we used in the present work two different phenolic compounds, phenol and a polar homologue of vitamin E (2,2,5,7,8-pentamethyl-6-hydroxychromane, PMC), as representatives of two different types of phenols to study reactions of their respective phenoxyl radicals with carotenoids in cells and in model systems. We found that phenoxyl radicals of PMC did not oxidize β-carotene in either HL-60 cells or in model systems with horseradish peroxidase (HRP)/H2O2. In contrast, the phenoxyl radicals generated from phenol (by native myeloperoxidase in HL-60 cells or HRP/H2O2 in model systems) effectively oxidized β-carotene and other carotenoids (canthaxanthin, lutein, lycopene). One-electron reduction of the phenoxyl radical by ascorbate (assayed by electron spin resonance-detectable formation of semidehydroascorbyl radicals) prevented HRP/H2O2-induced oxidation of β-carotene. PMC, but not phenol, protected β-carotene against oxidation induced by a lipid-soluble azo-initiator of peroxyl radicals. No adducts of peroxidase/phenol/H2O2-induced β-carotene oxidation intermediates with phenol were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the reaction mixture. Since carotenoids are essential constituents of the antioxidant defenses in cells and biological fluids, their depletion through the reaction with phenoxyl radicals formed from endogenous, nutritional and environmental phenolics, as well as phenolic drugs, may be an important factor in the development of oxidative stress.  相似文献

It is well known in the literature that obtaining the parameter estimates for the Smooth Transition Autoregressive-Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (STAR-GARCH) can be problematic due to computational difficulties. Conventional optimization algorithms do not seem to perform well in locating the global optimum of the associated likelihood function. This makes Quasi-Maximum Likelihood Estimator (QMLE) difficult to obtain for STAR-GARCH models in practice. Curiously, there has been very little research investigating the cause of the numerical difficulties in obtaining the parameter estimates for STAR-GARCH using QMLE. The aim of the paper is to investigate the nature of the numerical difficulties using Monte Carlo Simulation. By examining the surface of the log-likelihood function based on simulated data, the results provide several insights into the difficulties in obtaining QMLE for STAR-GARCH models. Based on the findings, the paper also proposes a simple transformation on the parameters to alleviate these difficulties. Monte Carlo simulation results show promising signs for the proposed transform. The asymptotic and robust variance-covariance matrices of the original parameter estimates are derived as a function of the transformed parameter estimates, which greatly facilitates inferences on the original parameters.  相似文献
