The role of wheat, and particularly of gluten protein, in our diet has recently been scrutinized. This article provides a summary of the main pathologies related to wheat in the human body, including celiac disease, wheat allergy, nonceliac wheat sensitivity, fructose malabsorption, and irritable bowel syndrome. Differences in reactivity are discussed for ancient, heritage, and modern wheats. Due to large variability among species and genotypes, it might be feasible to select wheat varieties with lower amounts and fewer types of reactive prolamins and fructans. Einkorn is promising for producing fewer immunotoxic effects in a number of celiac research studies. Additionally, the impact of wheat processing methods on wheat sensitivity is reviewed. Research indicates that germination and fermentation technologies can effectively alter certain immunoreactive components. For individuals with wheat sensitivity, less‐reactive wheat products can slow down disease development and improve quality of life. While research has not proven causation in the increase in wheat sensitivity over the last decades, modern wheat processing may have increased exposure to immunoreactive compounds. More research is necessary to understand the influence of modern wheat cultivars on epidemiological change.  相似文献

The phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of six diverse varieties of whole wheat are reported. The free phenolic content ranged from 255 (KanQueen) to 499 (Roane) μmol gallic acid equivalents/100 g DW. The bound phenolic content ranged from 582 (Roane) to 662 (Cham1) μmol gallic acid equivalents/100 g DW. The bound fraction contributed 53.8–69.7% of the total phenolic content of the wheat varieties analysed. Ferulic acid was the predominant phenolic acid found in whole wheat. Total ferulic acid content ranged from 310.8 (Caledonia) to 496.1 (KanQueen) μmol ferulic acid/100 g DW. The percentage of ferulic acid found in the insoluble-bound fraction ranged from 87.4% (Caledonia) to 97.2% (KanQueen). Other phenolic acids, p-coumaric acid, syringic acid, vanillic acid, and caffeic acid were also detected. Lutein was the predominant carotenoid found in the whole wheat varieties analysed. Zeaxanthin, β-carotene, and β-cryptoxanthin were also detected. Mainly α- and β-tocopherols and α- and β-tocotrienols were found in all varieties of whole wheat though γ-tocopherol was detected in all but two varieties. β-Tocotrienol was the predominant form of vitamin E found in all varieties of whole wheat. The antioxidant activity was assessed using the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay. The ORAC of the free fraction ranged from 1958 to 3749 μmol Trolox equivalents/100 g DW. The ORAC of the bound fraction ranged from 3190 to 5945 μmol Trolox equivalents/100 g DW. Total phenolic content was correlated with oxygen radical absorbance capacity (R2 = 0.810; p < 0.001). The phytochemicals found in whole grains may be responsible for the health benefit of whole grain consumption.  相似文献

To evaluate whether atherosclerosis may be associated with altered leucocyte rheology, we assessed leucocyte count (by Coulter counter), aggregation (by means of the leukergy test) and expression of adhesion molecules integrin LFA-1 and CD 44 (by means of immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometry) in 9 patients with carotid plus lower limb artery atherosclerosis (group A), 14 patients with carotid atherosclerosis only (group B) and 23 controls without atherosclerosis (group C). The level of LFA-1 (calculated as mean fluorescence channels-MFCs) on neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in group A and B patients than in controls (group A-mean +/- SE: 383.77 +/- 9.42 vs 295.45 +/- 5.76; 474.22 +/- 8.86 vs 388.35 +/- 7.84; 457.66 +/- 12.03 vs 396.25 +/- 4.37. Group B: 322.42 +/- 6.36 vs 295.45 +/- 5.76; 421.42 +/- 7.21 vs 388.35 +/- 7.84; 415.71 +/- 7.73 vs 396.25 +/- 4.37, respectively); furthermore, the MFC of LFA-1 on neutrophils was significantly different (p < 0.05) between group A and B patients. The percentage of aggregated leucocytes was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in group A patients (4.46 +/- 1.07) than those in groups B (1.75 +/- 0.38) and C (1.43 +/- 0.25), whereas no significant difference was detected between groups B and C. Leucocyte number and expression of CD44 were not significantly different among the 3 groups. In conclusion, changes in leucocyte rheology are present in patients with atherosclerosis and may contribute to chronic ischaemia.  相似文献

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) are predisposed to infections. There is a paucity of recent information on the incidence of post-splenectomy infectious complications in these patients. The purpose of this study was to determine whether splenectomy increases infectious complications in SCD. Twenty-nine patients with SCD had splenectomy for sequestration crises at our hospital between 1988 and 1992; 16 of them received all of their follow-up care at our institution. These 16 charts were reviewed for infectious-related admissions, hospital days, days of i.v. antibiotics, positive cultures, and episodes of sepsis. For each patient, these parameters in the pre- and postoperative period were compared and expressed as number per year. The mean age at time of splenectomy was 2.5 +/- 0.4 years and the mean follow-up was 4.5 +/- 0.4 years. There was no significant difference in the pre- and postoperative periods for admissions, hospital days, days of i.v. antibiotics, positive cultures, or episodes of sepsis per year. There were also no operative deaths. The incidence of pre-splenectomy sepsis was 0.04 +/- 0.03 episodes per year compared to 0.09 +/- 0.04 (P = ns) episodes/year after splenectomy. Sepsis occurred at an average of 20.8 (range 2-30) months postoperatively; Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most common causative organism. The total mortality after splenectomy in SCD patients was 3.4% (1/29) over a nearly 5-year period. Although infections are common in children with SCD, there was no increase in infections or episodes of sepsis in SCD patients who underwent splenectomy.  相似文献

Docking the tails of dairy cattle causes mild to moderate behavior changes and physiological indicators of acute pain, but no studies have investigated the possibility that tail docking may lead to chronic pain. In human amputees, an incidence of increased limb surface temperature is associated with phantom limb pain, a central nervous system representation that survives peripheral loss. The objectives of this study were to assess indicators of sensitivity or chronic pain in heifers by using behavioral indicators and thermography. We tested 14 Holstein heifers, 7 docked and 7 intact, from a previous neonatal tail-docking experiment. All 14 animals were videotaped during a test sequence of alternating cold (−9°C), hot (54°C), and neutral packs applied to the underside of the tail. Packs were placed approximately 30.5 cm from the tail head on all animals. A thermal image of the tail was taken using infrared imagery prior to and after temperature sensitivity testing. Docked heifers tended to have greater changes in surface temperatures following the test sequence than did nondocked heifers. In docked heifers, temperatures on the underside of the tail were higher than those at the tip of the tail, both prior to and following the test sequence. Docked heifers also showed substantially higher stomping activity following application of the cold pack. Shifting increased in intact heifers after application of the hot pack, but shifting of the docked heifers did not change. Greater changes were observed in the tail surface temperatures of the docked heifers following temperature manipulation, similar to human amputees who are experiencing phantom limb pain, indicating that similar mechanisms are present in the stump of the docked tail. The behaviors of docked heifers indicated changes in their sensitivity to heat and cold.  相似文献

In this paper, the problem of spectrum status determination is considered for large cognitive radio (CR) ad hoc networks. Spectrum sensing and spectrum decision are critical for cognitive radio network throughput and hence obtaining accurate knowledge of the spectrum status is vitally important to better spectrum usage decisions. The major challenge of this type of problem lies in the fact that for a network covering a large geographical area, only very limited measurements of spectrum occupancy during spectrum sensing may be obtained by the CR users for a certain location in any given time slot. This is due to both the hardware limitations as well as the tradeoff between spectrum sensing time and data throughput of the CR users. By representing the spectrum sensing results across the network as an image, spectrum status determination is formulated as an image recovery problem. The method of total variation inpainting is applied to solve the problem with low determination error. The proposed method takes advantage of the correlations in multiple dimensions and the numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.  相似文献
