We present a robot-assisted wayfinding system for the visually impaired in structured indoor environments. The system consists of a mobile robotic guide and small passive RFID sensors embedded in the environment. The system is intended for use in indoor environments, such as office buildings, supermarkets and airports. We describe how the system was deployed in two indoor environments and evaluated by visually impaired participants in a series of pilot experiments. We analyze the system’s successes and failures and outline our plans for future research and development.  相似文献

Theoretical predictions using a modified radical species ternary diagram for C–H–O system indicate that addition of sulfur expands the C–H–O gas phase compositional window for diamond deposition. Sulfur addition to no-growth domain increases the carbon super-saturation by binding the oxygen and the addition of sulfur to the non-diamond domain reduces the heavy carbon super-saturation by decreasing CnHm species concentration in the gas phase. The overall effect of sulfur addition to gas phase mixtures is characterized as that of oxygen addition to the C–H system, i.e. expansion of the compositional window over which diamond can be deposited from the gas phase. In addition, the increasing sulfur concentration to diamond domain feed gases beyond 2000 ppm did not affect the steady state gas phase composition but the quality of diamond was reduced.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The crown-rump length is conventionally used to determine the age of human abortuses. However, it is not reliable as it is dependent on the positioning of the conceptus. We compared this with the biparietal diameter and foot length for determining the gestational age. METHODS: Different measurements, commonly used to assess gestational age, were measured in 146 human abortuses for which an accurate obstetric history could not be elicited. Measurements taken were crown-rump length, biparietal diameter and foot length. These were correlated with the observations at antenatal examinations before finalizing the approximate age. RESULTS: Multiple regression analysis of the data indicated that of the three measurements, the biparietal diameter was the most reliable for determining foetal gestational age between 8 and 26 weeks. The age determined with the biparietal diameter correlated well with that of abortuses with an accurate obstetric history. CONCLUSION: The biparietal diameter of a human foetus may be used to determine its age if the obstetric history regarding the period of gestation is vague or not available.  相似文献

Powder-metal-processed bearings and gears are finding increasing application because of their economical and technical advantages. The residual pores from the sintering operatives act as lubricant pockets and dampen sound and vibration. However, porosity also decreases the mechanical strength and reduces the life of components fabricated by powder processing relative to similar wrought components. The rolling contact fatigue behavior of sintered and heat treated steel rollers was investigated using a fatigue test machine designed and fabricated for that purpose. The powder-metal-processed and the wrought steel rollers that were tested had similar composition and hardness and were mated against wrought steel rollers of high hardness. The contact stress versus number of cycles to failure data showed that the wrought steel had a very high endurance limit under rolling contact fatigue compared to the sintered steels investigated. Rolling contact fatigue behavior was found to depend on the porosity present in the material. Large surface peeling failures and pitting type fatigue failures were observed in the sintered and hardened steels, while only pitting type failures were observed in the wrought steels  相似文献

A temperature sensor based on photonic crystal structures with two- and three-dimensional geometries is proposed, and its measurement performance is estimated using a machine learning technique. The temperature characteristics of the photonic crystal structures are studied by mathematical modeling. The physics of the structure is investigated based on the effective electrical permittivity of the substrate (silicon) and column (air) materials for a signal at 1200 nm, whereas the mathematical principle of its operation is studied using the plane-wave expansion method. Moreover, the intrinsic characteristics are investigated based on the absorption and reflection losses as frequently considered for such photonic structures. The output signal (transmitted energy) passing through the structures determines the magnitude of the corresponding temperature variation. Furthermore, the numerical interpretation indicates that the output signal varies nonlinearly with temperature for both the two- and three-dimensional photonic structures. The relation between the transmitted energy and the temperature is found through polynomial-regression-based machine learning techniques. Moreover, rigorous mathematical computations indicate that a second-order polynomial regression could be an appropriate candidate to establish this relation. Polynomial regression is implemented using the Numpy and Scikit-learn library on the Google Colab platform.

In this article, modification of carbon fiber surface by carbon based nanofillers (multi-walled carbon nanotubes [CNT], carbon nanofibers, and multi-layered graphene) has been achieved by electrophoretic deposition technique to improve its interfacial bonding with epoxy matrix, with a target to improve the mechanical performance of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. Flexural and short beam shear properties of the composites were studied at extreme temperature conditions; in-situ cryo, room and elevated temperature (−196, 30, and 120°C respectively). Laminate reinforced with CNT grafted carbon fibers exhibited highest delamination resistance with maximum improvement in flexural strength as well as in inter-laminar shear strength (ILSS) among all the carbon fiber reinforced epoxy (CE) composites at all in-situ temperatures. CNT modified CE composite showed increment of 9% in flexural strength and 17.43% in ILSS when compared to that of unmodified CE composite at room temperature (30°C). Thermomechanical properties were investigated using dynamic mechanical analysis. Fractography was also carried out to study different modes of failure of the composites.  相似文献

Now a days telemedicine is a proactive research area and gaining more engrossment. Digital transmission of medical imaging, remote evaluation and diagnosis together are termed as Telemedcine and it has increasingly gained prominence in the recent times. Remote specialist reckons intemperately on scan images or medicinal images and data of patient for devising diagnostic conclusion. While imparting a scan image (clinical picture) to remote authority, the significant part (ROI) in it may be altered by interlopers. The remote authority must recover the ROI in a clinical picture on the off chance that it has been altered. This paper presents a novel robust watermarking method founded on Curvelet Transform to recover the ROI in medical image in case it is altered. The proposed method hides ROI information inside diagnostically insignificant part in medical image through Curvelet Transform. Experiments carried out using this novel technique have proven that the ROI in medical image is restored to its original state.

Research dealing with early diagnosis and efficient treatment in colon cancer to improve patient''s survival is still under investigation. Chemotherapeutic agent result in high systemic toxicity due to their non‐specific actions on DNA repair and/or cell replication. Traditional medicine such as Lycopodium clavatum (LC) has been claimed to have therapeutic potentials against cancer. The present study focuses on targeted drug delivery of cationic liposomal nanoformulated LC (CL‐LC) in colon cancer cells (HCT15) and comparing the efficacy with an anti‐colon cancer drug, 7‐ethyl‐10‐hydroxy‐camptothecin (SN38) along with its nanoformulated form (CL‐SN38). The colloidal suspension of LC was made using thin film hydration method. The drugs were characterised using ultraviolet, dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, energy, dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy. In vitro drug release showed kinetics of 49 and 89% of SN38 and LC, whereas CL‐SN38 and CL‐LC showed 73 and 74% of sustained drug release, respectively. Studies on morphological changes, cell viability, cytotoxicity, apoptosis, cancer‐associated gene expression analysis of Bcl‐2, Bax, p53 by real‐time polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis of Bad and p53 protein were performed. A small single-cylinder diesel engine is used to thermally age model (Pt + Rh/Ba/γ-Al2O3) lean NOx traps (LNTs) under lean/rich cycling at target temperatures of 600 °C, 700 °C, and 800 °C. During an aging cycle, fuel is injected into the exhaust to achieve reproducible exotherms under lean and rich conditions with the average temperature approximating the target temperature. Aging is performed until the cycle-average NOx conversion measured at 400 °C is approximately constant. Engine-based NOx conversion decreased by 42% after 60 cycles at 600 °C, 36% after 76 cycles at 700 °C and 57% after 46 cycles at 800 °C. The catalyst samples were removed and characterized by XRD and using a microreactor that allowed controlled measurements of surface area, precious metal size, NOx storage, and reaction rates. Three aging mechanisms responsible for the deactivation of LNTs have been identified: (i) loss of dispersion of the precious metals, (ii) phase transitions in the washcoat materials, and (iii) loss of surface area of the storage component and support. These three mechanisms are accelerated when the aging temperature exceeds 850 °C—the γ to δ transition temperature of Al2O3. Normalization of rates of NO reacted at 400 °C to total surface area demonstrates the biggest impact on performance stems from surface area losses rather than from precious metal sintering.  相似文献

A pin-on-disc-type wear test rig was used to study the influence of speed on the wear of sintered iron, sintered Fe-5Cu and sintered Fe-5Cu-5C materials over a range of speeds of 0.5 –16 m s?1 at a constant load of 40 N. With increasing speed the wear rate decreases to a minimum and then increases. Over the entire range of speeds two types of wear are observed: these are mild wear below a speed of 8 m s?1 and severe wear above a speed of 8 m s?1. The results are discussed in terms of friction records, wear particle size and composition, wear track study and topographic and metallographic studies of worn specimens.  相似文献
