This paper updates a scenario for the evolutionary integration of optical fibre transmission technology into existing cable television networks first presented in 1988. The resulting ‘fibre backbone’ yields a hybrid fibre/coaxial network with significantly better reliability and transmission quality than present systems. System and electro-optical component advances in the last year are reviewed, and the merits of various modulation techniques are examined. The fibre backbone approach emphasizes continuing the broadband delivery of a large number of video signals to the consumer.  相似文献

This is a review of a Specific application for video interconnection on single-mode optical fiber Over a 13.9 mi path, covering system design, aerial and underground plant construction, terminal equipment selection, and operating results. Both digital and analog circuits are used in the system, and the economics and performance of the two approaches are compared. The digital equipment in installed transports four video Channels on a single-mode fiber using both 1300 nm and 1550 nm lasers, and the analog system is tested transperting both 8 and 12 channels per fiber. To explore the potential of the system, tests are run on a fiber path 27.8 mi (44.7 km) in length. Using actual costs, an updated economic comparison between fiber optic systems and FM video coaxial systems is made. The conclusion is drawn that analog fiber video transmission systems have been developed to the point where they offer economics and performance generally superior to, and reliability substantially better than, FM video coaxial systems. Both analog and digital fiber systems are shown to be capable of excellent quality video transmission through a path loss of over 25 dB.  相似文献

70 university students who planned to enter graduate school in the helping professions viewed 1 of 4 videotapes. Two tapes described some of the relationships between the law and psychology, and 2 described the issues of sex bias and sex-role stereotyping in counseling women. The same male and female made identical presentations on each topic. Ss evaluated the presenter on a general measure of professional effectiveness and rated the importance of the tape's content. Three of the 4 hypotheses advanced were supported: (a) the male presenter received higher ratings than the female presenter, (b) the difference in ratings between the female and male presenters was greater for the topic directly related to women than for the topic not directly related, and (c) the female presenter discussing sex-role stereotyping received the lowest ratings of the 4 conditions. Limitations of current CATV (cable television) system architecture are described. A hybrid optical fiber/coaxial cable architecture is introduced, and the performance levels necessary for the optical portions of that system are explored. Optical device performance is outlined as it applies to such a hybrid system, and various optical components with the potential to be used in such a system are examined. It is concluded that the hybrid fiber backbone/coaxial distribution architecture outlined meets a number of needs within the CATV industry.
