Nonobese diabetic (NOD) mice spontaneously develop insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The disease results from an autoimmune process which involves mononuclear cells surrounding and eventually infiltrating the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. Macrophages are thought to be the first cells to infiltrate the islets and are actively involved in the disease process because diabetes is prevented if host macrophages are depleted or inactivated. Several lines of evidence also suggest that NOD macrophages are phenotypically and functionally abnormal. In this study, allogeneic (CBA) macrophages derived from the thymus were inoculated into newborn NOD mice and these were followed for more than 250 days. Spontaneous diabetes was significantly reduced in female NOD mice (6% diabetic versus 45% of controls). Insulitis was also significantly reduced in both male and female mice compared to their control counterparts, and in most cases there were virtually no inflammatory cells in the pancreas. Allogeneic skin grafting and mixed leukocyte cultures indicated that the recipients were not tolerant of donor antigens, and donor-derived cells were not detected in the lymphoid tissues by either flow cytometry or immunohistochemistry. The results show that macrophages from diabetes-resistant donors will prevent insulitis and diabetes in most recipients, however, the mechanism for the protection is unclear, but does not appear to be due to long-term tolerance induction.  相似文献

Urban radiowave propagation: a 3-D path-integral wave analysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A discussion concerning the need for three-dimensional (3-D) urban radiowave propagation models is presented and followed by a review of previously published work on this topic using the asymptotic path-integral technique. The limitations and advantages of this technique are explained and it is applied to study diffraction by a small number of canonical geometries. The validity of this technique is verified by comparison with controlled laboratory measurements taken at millimetric wave frequencies. Finally, its ability to classify field components according to their distribution in space is employed in order to analyze the observed field strength distributions in the model environments  相似文献

The authors present a biosensor intended to evaluate prostatic stiffness. The stiffness of the prostate was modulated using hormonal induction and adrenergic stimulation. The results show that the sensor can be sufficiently accurate to discriminate between soft prostates used as controls and those stiffened with hormones. The modulation produced by an adrenergic agent on prostatic stiffness was detected using this system. An electrical model was constructed embodying the parameters of prostatic stiffness, micturition frequency, and volume, demonstrating that prostatic stiffness correlates with micturition frequency  相似文献

This paper reports results from wideband MIMO measurements performed in short range fixed wireless environments at 5.2 GHz. The objective is to provide MIMO channel characterization results for the measured environments and contribute to the limited available similar studies. Two kinds of propagation scenarios are investigated, rooftop to rooftop and street to rooftop, at three different sites always under LOS propagation conditions. The analysis of measurement data is performed in the context of non physical modeling, providing insight into the statistics of the measured channels. In particular, the slow time varying nature of the channel is studied and the narrow Doppler spectrum shape is approximated. Furthermore, frequency correlation results are obtained and the typical delay dispersion measures are extracted. Then, the antenna correlation is studied and the error of the Kronecker product approximation is evaluated. Finally, capacity results are provided and the channel measurements are characterized in terms of spatial multiplexing quality and multipath richness through condition number analysis. Nikolaos D. Abstract  This study investigated acquisition and transfer of the modeling ability of fifth graders in various domains. Teaching interventions concentrated on the topic of marine ecosystems either through a modeling-based approach or a worksheet-based approach. A quasi-experimental (pre–post comparison study) design was used. The control group ( n  = 17) received a traditional worksheet-based instruction about ecosystems, whereas the experimental group ( n  = 16) received an instruction which was based on Stagecast Creator, an object-oriented programming tool, and a set of modeling-based curriculum materials. Paper-and-pencil tests were used both before and after the study to evaluate students' development of specific modeling skills. The data analysis followed both qualitative and quantitative methods. The findings of the present study indicate that (i) the development of modeling ability was effectively enhanced through the modeling-based approach, since, after instruction, students were able to transfer those aspects to unfamiliar contexts; in contrast, the more traditional worksheet-based approach did not promote the development of the same aspects of the modeling skill; and (ii) Stagecast Creator enabled students to construct, test, revise and validate dynamic computer-based models of a marine ecosystem through building, testing and debugging complex rules, routines and programs for simulating multiple behaviours and processes of marine species.  相似文献

Antennas and Propagation for On-Body Communication Systems   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
On-body communication channels are of increasing interest for a number of applications, such as medical-sensor networks, emergency-service workers, and personal communications. This paper describes investigations into channel characterization and antenna performance at 2.45 GHz. It is shown that significant channel fading occurs during normal activity, due primarily to the dynamic nature of the human body, but also due to multipath around the body and from scattering by the environment. This fading can be mitigated by the use of antenna diversity, and gains of up to 10 dB are obtained. Separation of the antenna's performance from the channel characteristics is difficult, but results show that for many channels, an antenna polarized normal to the body's surface gives the best path gain. Simulation and modeling present many challenges, particularly in terms of the problem's scale, and the need for accurate modeling of the body and its movement.  相似文献
