Burrowing mayfly species of the genus Hexagenia are well known indicators of environmental health in lakes and rivers. Two species, H. limbata and H. rigida, are indistinguishable as nymphs and as adult females. Our objectives were to develop a genetic technique to distinguish between the two species and identify morphological features that separate cryptic nymphs and adult females. Fifty nymphs were collected before emergence from 10 sites throughout the western basin of Lake Erie in 2004 and 2005. Using known specimens of adult aerial male H. limbata and H. rigida, we used the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene to identify a 16 base pair (bp) difference between species. DNA sequencing confirmed correct species identification based on differences in abdominal pigmentation patterns on adult female imagos in 19 of 20 cases; the lone exception was a female with very faint pigmentation. Pigmentation patterns between species were consistent on nymphs, subimagos and imagos of both sexes. Populations of both species are panmictic across the western basin of Lake Erie, but H. limbata is the numerically dominant species, representing 70 to 100% of nymphs at sites in both years. A separate lineage of H limbata was discovered in the samples. The ability to distinguish nymphs of the two species will aid in developing more sensitive ecosystem indicators.  相似文献

Although the round goby, Neogobius melanostomus, is widespread in the Great Lakes and has an extended breeding season with a high reproductive rate; its spawning behaviour remains elusive. We present the first reported accounts of spawning by the round goby in the laboratory. By simulating winter conditions and restoring spring conditions, we induced round gobies to spawn in October 2007, March 2008, May 2008, and January 2009. In one case, fanning by the nest-holding male began 10 days before egg deposition and, during this period, the male rubbed secretions along the ceiling of the nest. Males were choosy about which gravid females entered the nest and prevented entry by some females. Spawning involved repeated inversions by females and males releasing gametes on the ceiling of the nest. Males guarded the nest by blocking the entrance, producing agonistic vocalizations and chasing intruders. Inside the nest, eggs were regularly inspected by the males and constantly ventilated using pectoral and caudal fins. Up to three gravid females spawned sequentially in a nest. Peak ventilation occurred after egg deposition and declined with time until the parental male ate the eggs. The decline of parental care and egg cannibalism was likely an artifact of laboratory conditions and small brood size. Our findings offer new information on the reproductive habits of the invasive round goby. Because the reproductive sequence in the laboratory seems easy to disrupt, the procedures may lead to a management tool to control the spread of the species into new areas.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the behavioral, situational, and temporal effects of 4 months of methylphenidate (MPH) treatment for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHOD: Ninety-one children with ADHD were randomly assigned to receive either MPH (titrated to a target dose of 0.7 mg/kg twice a day) or a placebo. Treatment effects were investigated with measures sensitive to various behaviors (core and associated symptoms), situations (home and school), time periods (morning and afternoon, after reaching the target dose, and after 4 months of treatment), and side effects. RESULTS: MPH treatment improved symptoms of ADHD and oppositional behavior at school, both in the morning and afternoon, but not at home. Side effects (increase in physiological and effective symptoms, lack of weight gain) were significantly more frequent with MPH than with placebo treatment. Benefit was evident after titration, but the onset of some side effects was delayed. Side effects were reported by parents but not by teachers. CONCLUSIONS: Positive effects of MPH on behavior are evident in the classroom, but with MPH given twice daily, parents do not report that MPH improves behavior at home. Greater impact on home behavior may require three times daily MPH and combined treatments.  相似文献

The operating characteristics of a wide aperture (5 × 4.5 cm2), high output energy (5 J), UV preionized XeCl laser are described. The time dependence of the gain and absorption have been measured for both He and Ne based laser gas mixes. These measurements were correlated with the discharge current and voltage waveforms. For optimized laser gas mixes and pressures, the absorption for He based laser mixes was ten times higher than for Ne based mixes. The mechanical behaviour of weak mudstone (Opalinus Clay) at low stresses   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Over the last 10 years argillaceous rocks (mudrocks), such as the Jurassic claystone Opalinus Clay, have gained acceptance as a potential host formation for geological disposal of nuclear waste. Observations from tunnels in Opalinus Clay at the Mont Terri rock laboratory, Switzerland, suggest that the excavation-induced response is not linear-elastic. The micro-structure of the Opalinus Clay has been identified as a source for this response. It has been demonstrated that diagenetic processes over the last 180 Ma have been responsible for the formation of strong diagenetic bonds locking latent strain energy into the micro-structure of Opalinus Clay. A conceptual model of the micro-structure, including the effects of diagenetic processes, has been developed as a framework to interpret the mechanical behaviour of the Opalinus Clay. Samples recovered at Mont Terri rock laboratory have been subjected to processes that have resulted in bond breakage and the release of locked-in latent strain energy. This tends to reduce the strength and deformation properties of samples and induces low stiffness non-linearity of the stress–strain curve at low stress levels. Numerical modelling of the sampling stress-path at Mont Terri rock laboratory shows that unloading was the dominant factor resulting in this response. As a result, samples can shed light on the unloading response of the rockmass to excavation. This non-linear behaviour has been quantified by means of routine laboratory compressive tests.  相似文献

To identify potential hormonal pheromones of the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), a species recently introduced to the Great Lakes, we used electro-olfactogram (EOG) recording to examine olfactory responsiveness to more than 100 steroids and prostaglandins. Neogobius detected free and conjugated 18-, 19- and 21-carbon steroids, but did not detect prostaglandins. EOG cross-adaptation, used to determine if Neogobius can discriminate the detected compounds at the sensory level, suggested that the detected steroids act on four classes of olfactory receptor mechanisms named (according to the most potent ligand for each): estrone, 17 beta-estradiol-3 beta-glucuronide, etiocholanolone, and dehydroepiandrosterone-3-sulfate. Although none of the detected steroids induced reproductive behaviors, exposure to steroids from three of the four receptor classes (estrone, 17 beta-estradiol-3 beta-glucuronide, or etiocholanolone) increased ventilation rate in males, whereas only etiocholanolone increased ventilation rate in females. Using the ventilation increase as a behavioral bioassay of steroid detection, behavioral cross-adaptation studies in males demonstrated that steroids discriminated at the sensory level are also discriminated behaviorally. These findings suggest the round goby may use steroids as putative pheromones.  相似文献

We investigated which fish species and environmental variables were associated with the invasive round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and tubenose goby (Proterorhinus marmoratus) in nearshore Canadian waters of the Huron-Erie corridor of the lower Great Lakes. We measured a suite of environmental variables and used triplicate beach seine samples to collect fishes in summer 2006. Thirty sites were sampled in the day and a subset (n = 14) at night. Of 1,955 individuals caught in daytime samples, round goby (21.0 %), spottail shiner (17.3%) and emerald shiner (14.2%) were most abundant. Of 1,521 individuals collected at night, the most abundant species were round goby (42.3%) and emerald shiner (24.1%). Tubenose gobies represented 1% and 1.7% of all individuals caught in the day and night, respectively. Rarefaction analysis showed that overall species richness was greater in the day than night. Significantly more emerald shiner (P = 0.017), rock bass (P = 0.046) and round goby (P = 0.035) were caught at night than in the day; more logperch were caught in the day than at night (P = 0.042). Round gobies were positively associated with water temperatures up to 24°, but there was no relationship between round goby abundance and warmer temperatures. There were too few tubenose goby captured to determine their statistical association with environmental factors; however, tubenose gobies were found only where round gobies were collected. Round goby and tubenose goby were associated with yellow perch and rock bass. The benthic round goby was the most abundant species, whereas other abundant species were pelagic, schooling fishes that occupied a habitat distinct from round goby.  相似文献

We demonstrate a Fourier transform spectrometer in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectrum using a high-harmonic source, with wavelengths as short as 32 nm. The femtosecond infrared laser source is divided into two separate foci in the same gas jet to create two synchronized XUV sources. An interferometric method to determine the relative delay between the two sources is shown to improve the accuracy of the delay time, with corrections of up to 200 asec required. By correcting the time base before the Fourier transform, the frequency resolution is improved by up to an order of magnitude.  相似文献
