Uniqueness of maximum likelihood estimators of the 2-parameterWeibull distribution

We present a simple statistic, calculated from either complete failure data or from right-censored data of type-I or -II. It is useful for understanding the behavior of the parameter maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) of a 2-parameter Weibull distribution. The statistic is based on the logarithms of the failure data and can be interpreted as a measure of variation in the data. This statistic provides: (a) simple lower bounds on the parameter MLE, and (b) a quick approximation for parameter estimates that can serve as starting points for iterative MLE routines; it can be used to show that the MLE for the 2-parameter Weibull distribution are unique     

Effect of Neutron Irradiation on Knoop Microhardness Anisotropy in MgO·3Al2O3 Single Crystals

MgO·3Al₂O₃ single crystals were irradiated with neutron fluences of 8.3 × 10²² n/m² at 100°C and 2.4 × 10²⁴ n/m² at 470°C ( E > 1.0 MeV) in the Japan Materials Testing Reactor. The Knoop microhardness of several orientations on the (100) plane of both the irradiated and unirradiated crystals were measured with different indentation loads. The change in hardness profile of the crystals was almost the same after the two irradiation conditions. The hardness increased by 4–15% because of the irradiations depending on the crystallographic orientation, the larger change being observed at orientations between the (001) and (011) directions. While both the {111}     and {110}     slip systems are simultaneously active in the unirradiated MgO·3Al₂O₃, the {111}     system may be the dominant slip system in the neutron-irradiated crystals. It is concluded that the restriction of the {110}     slip system is caused by irradiation-induced interstitial ions.     

Compiler support for floating-point computation

Predictability is a basic requirement for compilers of floating-point code—it must be possible to determine the exact floating-point operations that will be executed for a particular source-level construction. Experience shows that many compilers fail to provide predictability, either because of an inadequate understanding of its importance or from an attempt to produce locally better code. Predictability can be attained through careful attention to code generation and a knowledge of the common pitfalls. Most language standards do not completely define the precision of floating-point operations, and so a good compiler must also make a good choice in assigning precisions of subexpression computation. Choosing the widest precision that will be used in the expression usually gives the best trade-off between efficiency and accuracy. Finally, certain optimizations are particularly useful for floating-point and should be included in a compiler aimed at scientific computation. But predictability is more important than efficiency; obtaining incorrect answers fast helps no one.     

Variability of ciliary ultrastructure in normal dogs

The incidence of abnormal tracheal cilia from each of seven normal healthy dogs was estimated using samples prepared for TEM and SEM from the dorsal, lateral, and ventral aspects of the 3rd, 12th, and 24th tracheal rings. Some samples were demembranated with Triton X-100 and stained with tannic acid to visualize microtubular protofilaments. From each region of each ring of each dog on which TEM was done, 500 transversely sectioned cilia were observed, 27,000 cilia overall. Abnormal numbers of central microtubules and abnormal numbers of peripheral microtubules occurred in all samples in about 2% of all cilia. Compound cilia were consistently observed in samples from the 3rd ring and were not observed in any samples from the 24th ring. Therefore, before abnormal ciliary ultrastructure may be associated with disease, the rate of occurrence must exceed that in appropriate control individuals. Additionally, compound cilia, which have previously been associated with a variety of diseases, obviously occur in normal individuals; however, their observation may be a function of biopsy site selection.     

A comparison of the academic aptitude of university extension degree students and campus students.

The scores of 68 extension students in business administration on the ACE Psychological Examination and the Coop Reading Comprehension Examination were compared with scores of 119 business administration freshmen. Slight, statistically significant differences in favor of the extension students were found for two of the reading subtests.
