Cash cow in the tar pit: reengineering a legacy system

Many old systems are still with us and burden us with baggage, but replacing them, particularly when they are legacy systems, is not as straightforward as it seems. The author imparts some of the lessons learned on a legacy-replacement project     

"Defense" against traumatic concepts.

Shows that traumatic responses attached to 1 instance of a concept will impair the identification of the concept even when the traumatized concept is not part of the concept identification task. Such traumatic priming proved detrimental compared with either neutral priming or no priming. Neutral priming proved to facilitate concept identification. A Thermal Neutron Image Intensification System

An image intensifier tube of the vacuum tube type, sensitive to thermal neutrons has been developed and tested. The tube provides a bright visible output signal for an incoming thermal neutron image. Sensitivity, resolution, speed, contrast and relative response to radiation other than thermal neutrons all appear to be adequate for application to neutron imaging studies employing either reactor or non-reactor thermal neutron sources. The above characteristics, and applications of the system, are discussed.     

Fetal tissue repair and wound healing

The fibrosis and scar formation that characterize adult wound healing are also the cause of clinical problems; scar contracture, hypertrophic scar, and pulmonary and hepatic fibrosis are only a few examples. Studies of fetal wound healing can provide an insight into the initiation and regulation of a scarless repair process akin to regeneration. Studies of fetal repair have already suggested mechanisms that might favorably alter adult healing. Topical application of hyaluronic acid to wounds in adult diabetic rats leads to enhanced epithelial migration. It has been recognized that the addition of TGF-beta to fetal wounds causes an adultlike healing response with fibrosis and inflammation. A subsequent study using neutralizing antibody to TGF-beta in adult wounds showed enhanced healing with a more normal dermal architecture with fewer macrophages, fewer blood vessels, and less collagen. As our understanding of regenerative tissue repair increases, the opportunities to modulate adult fibrotic conditions should expand.     

ITU-T initiatives on climate change

It is estimated that ICTs contribute around 2 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. These percentages are likely to grow as ICTs become more widely available. At the same time, ICTs can be a major linchpin in efforts to combat climate change and serve as a potent cross-cutting tool to limit and ultimately reduce GHG emissions across economic and social sectors. This article looks at the potential role ICTs play at different stages, from contributing to global warming to monitoring it, to developing long-term solutions to mitigate its effects, both directly in the ICT sector and in other sectors such as energy, transport, buildings, and finally to helping adapt to its effects. The article addresses the efforts made by the ITU and its membership to develop new climate-friendly technologies.
