A study compares two methods of reading text-based content on mobile phones: traditional scroll-based reading and Rapid Serial Visual Presentation, which displays words rapidly in a sequence. University students used a prototype called Feedo to test both methods, and their reading comprehension, efficiency, and preference ratings were measured. The results show that efficiency increases with fast RSVP, comprehension is equal, and preference rating is lower than with self-paced scroll.  相似文献

The results of an experimental study of electro-optic modulators and waveguides based on polymeric materials are presented. Included are the design, fabrication, and testing of integrated Mach-Zehnder modulators, which are based on polymer films that contain a novel, nonlinear electro-optic chromophore. Studies also show the efficacy of photolithography or photobleaching by the use of this chromophore to form passive, branching waveguides, which are operated at the 1300-nm wavelength.  相似文献

We have implemented a compiler for key parts of Modelica, an object-oriented language supporting equation-based modeling and simulation of complex physical systems. The compiler is extensible, to support experiments with emerging tools for physical models. To achieve extensibility, the implementation is done declaratively in JastAdd, a metacompilation system supporting modern attribute grammar mechanisms such as reference attributes and nonterminal attributes.This paper reports on experiences from this implementation. For name and type analyses, we illustrate how declarative design strategies, originally developed for a Java compiler, could be reused to support Modelica’s advanced features of multiple inheritance and structural subtyping. Furthermore, we present new general design strategies for declarative generation of target ASTs from source ASTs. We illustrate how these strategies are used to resolve a generics-like feature of Modelica called modifications, and to support flattening, a fundamental part of Modelica compilation. To validate that the approach is practical, we have compared the execution speed of our compiler to two existing Modelica compilers.  相似文献

Stimulated by recent intriguing experiments with a quantum dot in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring, we investigate novel resonant phenomena by studying the total transmission probability of nanoscale AB rings with an embedded scattering center in one arm and a magnetic flux passing through its center. In the AB ring with double coupled-quantum dots (QDs), we show that the overlapping of Fano resonances arises from the strong interaction between two quasi-bound levels in the coupled QDs, and that the zero of the Fano resonance is shifted to the complex plane. In addition, we also study the effects of an asymmetry in the arm by inserting an attractive potential well (dot) in one arm. The combined transmission resonance effects as functions of variables of the ring structure and the potential are presented. It is shown that an attractive potential in one of the arms in the AB ring generates an asymmetric Fano resonance in the transmission.  相似文献

We investigate the consequences of an incommensurate magnetic order in doped La2–x Sr x CuO4 using dynamical mean-field theory for the effective single-band model. The high-energy optical transitions are due to high-energy excitations across large Mott–Hubbard gap, while low-energy excitations involve a pseudogap induced by the local spin order. The latter lead to a strong drop in the scattering rate at low , in qualitative agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

Heterotrimeric GTP-binding protein (G-protein)-coupled receptors are able to induce a variety of responses including cell proliferation, differentiation, and activation of several intracellular kinase cascades. Prominent among these kinases are the activation of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase, including the extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs), ERK1 and ERK2 (p44mapk and p42mapk, respectively); stress-activated protein kinases (SAPKs/JNKs); and p38 kinase. These receptors signal through G-proteins. Recent data have shown that the activation of mitogen-activated protein/ERK kinase induced by G-protein-coupled receptors is mediated by both Galpha and Gbetagamma subunits involving a common signaling pathway with receptor-tyrosine-kinases. Gbetagamma-mediated mitogen-activated protein kinase activation is mediated by activation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase, followed by a tyrosine phosphorylation event, and proceeds in a sequence of events that involve functional association among the adaptor proteins Shc, Grb2, and Sos. SAPKs/JNKs and p38 are able to be activated by Gbetagamma proteins in a pathway involving Rho family proteins including RhoA, Rac1, and Cdc42.  相似文献

The Marchand passive treatment system was constructed in 2006 for a 6,000 L/min discharge from an abandoned underground bituminous coal mine located in western Pennsylvania, USA. The system consists of six serially connected ponds followed by a large constructed wetland. Treatment performance was monitored between December 2006 and 2007. The system inflow was alkaline with pH 6.2, 337 mg/L CaCO3 alkalinity, 74 mg/L Fe, 1 mg/L Mn, and <1 mg/L Al. The final discharge averaged pH 7.5, 214 mg/L CaCO3 alkalinity, and 0.8 mg/L Fe. The settling ponds removed 84% of the Fe at an average rate of 26 g Fe m−2 day−1. The constructed wetland removed residual Fe at a rate of 4 g Fe m−2 day−1. Analyses of dissolved and particulate Fe fractions indicated that Fe removal was limited in the ponds by the rate of iron oxidation and in the wetland by the rate of particulate iron settling. The treatment effectiveness of the system did not substantially degrade during cold weather or at high flows. The system cost $1.3 million (2006) or $207 (US) per L/min of average flow. Annual maintenance and sampling costs are projected at $10,000 per year. The 25-year present value cost estimate (4% discount rate) is $1.45 million or $0.018 per 1,000 L of treated flow.  相似文献
