Some approximate Godunov schemes to compute shallow-water equations with topography

We study here the computation of shallow-water equations with topography by Finite Volume methods, in a one-dimensional framework (though all methods introduced may be naturally extended in two dimensions). All methods are based on a discretisation of the topography by a piecewise function constant on each cell of the mesh, from an original idea of Le Roux et al. Whereas the Well-Balanced scheme of Le Roux is based on the exact resolution of each Riemann problem, we consider here approximate Riemann solvers. Several single step methods are derived from this formalism, and numerical results are compared to a fractional step method. Some test cases are presented: convergence towards steady states in subcritical and supercritical configurations, occurrence of dry area by a drain over a bump and occurrence of vacuum by a double rarefaction wave over a step. Numerical schemes, combined with an appropriate high-order extension, provide accurate and convergent approximations.     

Amyloid disease and extreme macroglossia. Apropos of a case

A case of extreme macroglossia was observed in a patient with amyloid disease and dysglobulinaemia. A medial diamond-shaped glossectomy was required to reduce the size of the tongue. The details of the surgical and anaesthetic procedure are presented. This type of surgery, greatly appreciated by the patient, can only be undertaken after careful preparation. The reported cases are rare and the indication for surgery is difficult due to the unpredictable nature of the local and general clinical course of the disease.     

Accumulation of nitrite and sulfite in yeast cells and synergistic depletion of the intracellular ATP content

Summary When nitrite or sulfite are applied to yeast cells below pH 5.0, an enormous intracellular accumulation occurs. It is assumed that nitrite and sulfite penetrate the cell membrane in their undissociated forms as nitrous acid (pK = 3.3) or sulfurous acid (pK =1.8), respectively. Due to the neutral intracellular pH they are trapped inside the cell in their anionic forms, which are impermeable to the cell membrane. It has previously been shown that sulfite causes a rapid depletion of the ATP content of yeast cells [Schimz, K. L. and Holzer, H. (1979) resp. Hinze et al. as above]. Similarly, millimolar concentrations of nitrite decrease the ATP level to less than 10% of the initial value. Nitrite and sulfite in combination deplete the ATP content of yeast cells much stronger than expected for the sum of the separate effects of these compounds (synergistic effect).

Akkumulation von Nitrit und Sulfit in Hefezellen und synergistischer Abfall des intrazellulären ATP-Gehalts

Zusammenfassung Wenn Hefezellen mit Nitrit oder Sulft bei pH-Werten unter 5,0 inkubiert werden, beobachtet man eine starke intracelluläre Akkumulation von Nitrit, bzw. Sulfit. Es ist anzunehmen, daß Nitrit und Sulfit in ihrer undissoziierten Form als salpetrige Säure (pK=3,3) bzw. schweflige Säure (pK=1,8) penetrieren und dann in den Zellen durch Neutralisation zu den anionischen Formen, die die Zellmembran nicht mehr permeieren können, abgefangen werden. Ähnlich dem früher beschriebenen raschen Abfall des ATP-Gehaltes nach Zusatz von Sulfit in Hefe [Schimz, KL und Holzer H (1979) Arch Microbiol 121:225–229] und in Bakterien [Hinze H, Maier K, Holzer H (1981) Z Lebensm Unters Forsch 172:389-392] verursacht auch Nitrit einen raschen Abfall des ATP-Gehaltes in Hefe auf weniger als 10 % des Anfangswertes. Werden Nitrit und Sulfit in Kombination verabreicht, so beobachtet man einen wesentlich stärkeren Abfall des ATP-Gehaltes als er aus der Summe der Einzeleffekte von Nitrit, bzw. Sulfit zu erwarten wäre (Synergistischer Effekt).

     

Beam propagation constants for a radial laser array

The beam quality of a radial laser array, quantified in terms of the M(2) propagation constant, is determined as a function of array element configuration. A lower bound on array M(2) is estimated for both phase-locked and nonphase-locked conditions. It is shown that, to achieve near-unity M(2) array, either aperture filling or spatial filtering is required in addition to phase locking. An aperture-filling method suitable for radial arrays of CO(2) slab lasers is presented.     

Characterization of ozone sensors based on WO3 reactively sputtered films: influence of O2 concentration in the sputtering gas, and working temperature

We report on electrical responses of tungsten oxide thin film ozone sensors based on a tungsten trioxide (WO₃)/tin oxide (SiO₂)/Si structure with interdigitated Pt electrodes. The influence of O₂ concentration in the sputtering gas and working temperature of the sensor are investigated. Sensitivity to ozone increases with O₂ content in the sputtering gas. It reaches its highest value for sensors fabricated with 50% O₂. For these sensors, the best ozone sensitivity and shortest response and recovery times are obtained at a working temperature of 523 K. Ozone sensitivity is compared to other ozone sensors.
