Volatile nitriles are present in cigarette smoke. We tested the hypothesis that the presence of any of four nitriles in the blood can serve as a marker of recent cigarette smoking. We determined the sensitivity and specificity of these nitriles as indicators of daily cigarette smoking in 24 smokers (Group A) and 18 non-smokers (Group B), as well as the correlation between intensity of daily smoking and the blood concentration of acetonitrile. A new head space GLC assay method was used. Of the four nitriles, only acetonitrile was present in the blood of any study subject. Acetonitrile was moderately sensitive (67%) and entirely specific (100%) for self-reported daily smoking. There was fair correlation between blood acetonitrile concentration and the average daily number of cigarettes smoked (r2 = 0.39; P = 0.001), and the mean blood acetonitrile concentration was significantly higher (P = 0.03) among subjects with higher (> 10 cigarettes per day) current cigarette exposure (148.3 +/- 18.0 micrograms/l) than among smokers with low or minimal (1-10 cigarettes per day) exposure (43.3 +/- 6.0 micrograms/l). Thus, acetonitrile in blood appears to be highly specific and a moderately sensitive marker of cigarette smoking with a dose-effect relationship. As such, acetonitrile shows promise as a marker of current cigarette exposure.  相似文献

In statistical admission control based on effective bandwidth, the network provides probabilistic guarantees for the packet loss and delay. In integrated multiservice networks like third-generation mobile networks, some traffic classes also need guarantees on the jitter. One approach is to treat jitter like delay. This letter proposes a new criterion to take into account jitter guarantees. Numerical results show that our criterion is effective and adds improvement up to 10% on the bandwidth management.  相似文献

PURPOSE: This study was performed to describe the clinicopathologic features of a group of patients with posttraumatic unilateral focal choroidal granulomatous inflammation. METHODS: Enucleated eyes with focal choroidal granulomatous inflammation without clinical signs of contralateral ocular inflammation were identified. Clinical and pathologic features were recorded. RESULTS: Six enucleated eyes that had been injured by projectiles had focal uveal granulomatous inflammation of the posterior choroid. Four eyes had uvea attached to or incarcerated into the wound. Two eyes had foreign material associated with the granulomatous inflammation, and two eyes had a disrupted lens with lens-induced inflammation. Two eyes exhibited the focal granulomatous inflammation at the site of a choroidal rupture. None of the six enucleated eyes contained Dalen-Fuchs' nodules. CONCLUSIONS: Focal choroidal granulomatous inflammation may occur as a result of penetrating ocular trauma. The origin of this condition is unknown, although it likely represents a reaction to a foreign body.  相似文献

Objective: In Stroop-like tasks, the detection of conflict triggers adjustments of cognitive control to reduce conflict in subsequent trials. The present study tested the hypothesis of an impaired modulation of conflict monitoring in Parkinson's disease (PD). Method: 18 PD patients and 18 healthy control (HC) participants performed a Stroop-like task in 2 conditions differing in terms of incongruent/congruent stimuli ratio. Results: HC participants demonstrated a sustained modulation of interference effect, the interference effect being decreased when the proportion of incongruent stimuli was high. A trial-by-trial analysis also showed that in the HC group, processing an incongruent stimulus reduced interference in the subsequent trial. Unlike controls, PD patients did not demonstrate any transient or sustained reduction of the interference effect. Conclusion: Within the framework of recent models, these results can be interpreted as an impairment of a proactive mode of cognitive control in patients with PD. The "explosive growth in bursty traffic" changes the network dynamics and requires a good evaluation of various classes of service when designing an access network. From a topological standpoint, the multiservice networks in this paper are heterogeneous systems which integrate both a core and some wireless access networks into an infrastructure similar to third-generation wireless networks. Such networks require reliable and cost-effective solutions to the problem of selecting access technologies for satisfying performance and quality of service requirements related to the services and applications envisioned. This paper analyzes the reliability aspects of some access network topologies to insure a certain level of quality of service at the lowest cost for the end users. It considers a mass market equivalent to 1.6 million subscribers, the objective being to determine the cost the users are ready to pay to benefit from services and applications provided by these multiservice networks. For these purposes, the relative behavior of 3 access-network topologies are studied: the tree with parallel backup links, the ring, and the partially meshed topologies. In ring topology, simulation results show that a great connectivity in the access network is not justified in terms of reliability requirements; the partially meshed topology, even if it has redundant links which affect its cost, outperforms the tree with parallel backup links; and the ring topology is more reliable in terms of disconnected sessions than the tree topology. By considering both reliability and cost, a tree with parallel backup links appears the best topology for the access network and its cost is acceptable for the end user. This study can be extended by: (1) establishing the cost as a function of the quality of service; (2) optimizing the partially meshed topology for more reliable networks; and (3) defining a (shaping) policy to deal with a variety of traffic schemes  相似文献

The design of wireless telecommunications networks is a complex process, which requires solving simultaneously many difficult combinatorial optimization problems. We propose a taboo-search approach dedicated to one of the aforementioned design optimization problems, namely the cell assignment problem. Our approach defines a series of moves applicable to an initial solution in order to improve the cost and establish the feasibility of the solution. For this purpose, we identify a gain structure with update procedures to efficiently choose the best solution in the current neighborhood. The results are generally good in comparison with those obtained through other heuristic methods.  相似文献
