Fibre Bragg grating compression-tuned over 110 nm

A fibre Bragg grating with a tuning range covering beyond the C- and L-bands has been realised, which represents the broadest tuning range reported of any Bragg grating. The device exhibits constant spectral response and polarisation mode dispersion within these bands.     

Anomalous linewidth behavior in short-cavity single-frequency fiber lasers

An experimental investigation of the anomalous linewidth behavior in a distributed feedback fiber laser is presented. It is found that not only does the linewidth deviate from the Schawlow-Townes linewidth formula by increasing with pump and laser power, but it also varies significantly with the pumping configuration. These observations have potentially important implications for the design and operation of such fiber lasers.     

A grating-based OCDMA coding-decoding system incorporating anonlinear optical loop mirror for improved code recognition and noisereduction

We demonstrate an elementary grating-based optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) code generation and recognition system incorporating a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) within the receiver. We show that the NOLM can act as a nonlinear processing element capable of reducing both the pedestal associated with conventional matched filtering and the width of the associated code-recognition pulse. The pedestal rejection allows for an improved code recognition signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) relative to simple matched filtering alone, and reduced intra- and interchannel interference noise due to code overlap. The system benefits of using the NOLM are experimentally demonstrated under both single- and multiuser operation within a variety of seven- and 63-chip 160-Gchip/s code generation, recognition, and transmission experiments based on the use of bipolar superstructure fiber Bragg grating (SSFBG) coding-decoding pairs. Incorporation of the NOLM is shown to allow error-free penalty-free operation at data rates as high as 2.5 Gb/s under single-user operation, and to provide error-free performance with reduced power penalty in two-user experiments. The narrowed pulse recognition signature offers major advantages in terms of the further all-optical processing of decoded signals, such as code regeneration and recoding     

Normal values for ambulatory blood pressure and differences between casual blood pressure and ambulatory blood pressure: results from a Danish population survey

Oncogenic forms of the Abl and Src tyrosine kinases trigger the destruction of the Abi proteins, a family of Abl-interacting proteins that antagonize the oncogenic potential of Abl after overexpression in fibroblasts. The destruction of the Abi proteins requires tyrosine kinase activity and is dependent on the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. We show that degradation of the Abi proteins occurs through a Ras-independent pathway. Significantly, expression of the Abi proteins is lost in cell lines and bone marrow cells isolated from patients with aggressive Bcr-Abl-positive leukemias. These findings suggest that loss of Abi proteins may be a component in the progression of Bcr-Abl-positive leukemias and identify a novel pathway linking activated nonreceptor protein tyrosine kinases to the destruction of specific target proteins through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway.     

A portable virtual machine for Ada

A portable compiler can be constructed by letting it generate code for a virtual machine, which is then implemented on the real target machines. The design of a virtual machine which is especially suitable as a target machine for compiled Ada programs is described. The main design goals, implementability on mini-computers and portability, are discussed and the resulting design is described in some detail. Some implementation strategies for the machine are proposed and the feasibility of the virtual machine approach is discussed.     

Occult hereditary spherocytosis in aplastic crisis of unknown cause

We describe two cases of aplastic crisis of unknown origin, occurring within one week in a 49-year old man and his 20 year old son. They both had undiagnosed hereditary spherocytosis, and both of them had earlier had a B19-parvo infection without having symptoms of aplastic crisis at the same time. Chronic haemolytic anaemia should be considered in adult patients with acute severe anaemia caused by aplastic crisis.     

A comparative study of the performance of seven- and 63-chipoptical code-division multiple-access encoders and decoders based onsuperstructured fiber Bragg gratings

We report a range of elementary optical coding and decoding experiments employing superstructured fiber Bragg grating (SSFBG) components: first, we perform a comparative study of the relative merits of bipolar and unipolar coding: decoding schemes and show that the SSFBG approach allows high-quality unipolar and bipolar coding. A performance close to that-theoretically predicted for seven-chip, 160-Gchip/s M-sequence codes is obtained. Second, we report the fabrication and performance of 63-chip, 160-Gchip/s, bipolar Gold sequence grating pairs. These codes are at least eight times longer than those generated by any other scheme based on fiber grating technology so far reported. Last, we describe a range of transmission system experiments for both the seven- and 63-bit bipolar grating pairs. Error-free performance is obtained over transmission distances of ~25 km of standard fiber. In addition, we have demonstrated error-free performance under multiuser operation (two simultaneous users). Our results highlight the precision and flexibility of our particular grating writing process and show that SSFBG technology represents a promising technology not just for optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) but also for an extended range of other pulse-shaping optical processing applications     

High average power, high repetition rate, picosecond pulsed fiber master oscillator power amplifier source seeded by a gain-switched laser diode at 1060 nm

We demonstrate a pulsed ytterbium-doped fiber master-oscillator power amplifier source at 1060 nm producing over 300 W of average power in 20-ps pulses at 1-GHz repetition rate. The pulses generated by a gain-switched diode were compressed by a chirped fiber Bragg grating and amplified without any distortion with excellent spectral quality. This fiber master oscillator power amplifier system offers versatility and potential for further power scaling.     

Performance comparison of spectrum-slicing techniques employing SOA-based noise suppression at the transmitter or receiver

We compare three semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-based noise suppression approaches employed in incoherent light spectrum-sliced systems. Although the SOA at the transmitter provides the best absolute noise suppression, it is susceptible to performance degradation in the presence of optical filtering and dispersion. Using the SOA at the receiver can provide good performance while avoiding these limitations, and may provide better value in last-mile access applications.     

Dispersionless slow light with 5-pulse-width delay in fibre Bragg grating

The excitation of gap solitons in a 30 cm fibre Bragg grating using 0.68 ns pulses, which emerge with atunable delay of up to 3.2 ns, corresponding to almost five pulse widths, and without broadening, are observed. This delay is an improvement by a factor of 2 from previous experiments.
