The promise of a broadband integrated service digital network has led to the design of mechanisms for efficient transport of real-time compressed video in packet switching networks. We examine feedback control for video transport in ATM networks where the available feedback is a single bit of information carried in the cell header. We investigate the performance of three single-bit schemes for source rate adaptation. Two were originally for congestion control of bursty data traffic and are modified to control video traffic. The third scheme conveys more information about the state of queue(s) at the bottleneck. The simulation results show that all three schemes for feedback control of VBR video streams work remarkably well. During severe network congestion, the signal quality degrades gracefully, but not uniformly across all connections. Based on insights from the initial simulations, we propose a scheme to improve the fairness of service and demonstrate its effectiveness.  相似文献

An experimental program was conducted to study the thermochemical and flammability characteristics of an improved polyisocyanurate foam, uncoated and coated either with fluorinated copolymer or an intumescent material. Testing methods included thermal analysis; scanning electron microscopy; infrared photography; infrared spectroscopy; HLT-15, ASTM D-1692, Bureau of Mines Penetration, and XP-2 smoke chamber flammability tests; limiting oxygen index (LOI); and a moderate-scale fire simulation test. The uncoated and coated foams were found to have excellent flammability and insulation characteristics, although smoke development was substantial.  相似文献

The activity in building gigabit speed networks has led many researchers to re-examine the issue of congestion control. We describe a rate-based hop-by-hop congestion control mechanism in which the service rates of connections are dynamically adjusted at a switch, using feedback information provided by the neighboring switches. The desired service rate is computed based on a control equation that utilizes a model of the system with feedback information used to correct inaccuracies in the model. We use an analytical model to prove that the expected value of the queue occupancy and throughput of a controlled connection converge to the desired operating point. We also study the variation of the queue occupancy and throughput in steady-state as well as the transient response. The analytical results provide insights into how the parameter values chosen affect performance. We use simulations to compare the performance of the scheme with an equivalent end-to-end control scheme. Our analytical and simulation results show that the hop-by-hop scheme reacts faster to changes in the traffic intensity and, consequently, utilizes resources at the bottleneck better and loses fewer packets than the end-to-end scheme  相似文献

A coaxial nozzle was developed to achieve further control over the morphology of microparticles precipitated from solution by carbon dioxide as a compressed fluid antisolvent. The polymer solution was sprayed through the core of the nozzle and CO2 through the annulus. For the coaxial nozzle versus a standard nozzle, polystyrene and poly(L-lactic acid) particles can be larger by a factor of 3–8 with less flocculation. A reduction in the Weber number reduces atomization and larger droplets are formed in the jet, delaying precipitation. However, because of the much higher Reynolds number for the high velocity CO2, the mass transfer in the suspension outside of the jet is faster leading to less flocculation and agglomeration. For polyacrylonitrile, the delayed precipitation produces a transition from highly oriented microfibrils to microparticles. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We show that modulating the source rate of a video encoder based on congestion signals from the network has two major benefits: the quality of the video transmission degrades gracefully when the network is congested and the transmission capacity is used efficiently. Source rate modulation techniques have been used in the past in designing fixed rate video encoders used over telephone networks. In such constant bit rate encoders, the source rate modulation is done using feedback information about the occupancy of a local buffer. Thus, the feedback information is available instantaneously to the encoder. In the scheme proposed, the feedback may be delayed by several frames because it comes from an intermediate switching node of a packet switched network. The paper shows the proposed scheme performs quite well despite this delay in feedback. We believe the use of such schemes will simplify the architecture used for supporting real time video services in future nationwide gigabit networks  相似文献
