OBJECTIVE: To determine if patients with the Guillain-Barré syndrome are likely to have had Campylobacter jejuni infection before onset of neurologic symptoms. DESIGN: A case-control study. SETTING: Several university medical centers. PATIENTS: Case patients met clinical criteria for the Guillain-Barré syndrome between 1983 and 1990 and had a serum sample collected and frozen within 3 weeks after onset of neurologic symptoms (n = 118). Disease controls were patients with other neurologic illnesses (n = 56); healthy controls were hospital employees or healthy family members of patients (n = 47). MEASUREMENTS: Serum IgA, IgG, and IgM antibodies to C. jejuni were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Assays were done in a blinded manner. RESULTS: Optical density ratios > or = 2 in two or more immunoglobulin classes were seen in 43 (36%) of patients with the Guillain-Barré syndrome and in 10 (10%) of controls (odds ratio, 5.3; 95% CI, 2.4 to 12.5; P < 0.001). Increasing the optical density ratio or the number of immunoglobulin classes necessary to yield a positive result increased the strength of the association. The number of patients with the Guillain-Barré syndrome who had positive serologic responses was greatest from September to November (P = 0.02). Male patients were three times more likely to have serologic evidence of C. jejuni infection (P = 0.009); the proportion of patients with the syndrome who had a positive serologic response increased with age. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with the Guillain-Barré syndrome are more likely than controls to have serologic evidence of C. jejuni infection in the weeks before onset of neurologic symptoms. Campylobacter jejuni may play a role in the initiation of the Guillain-Barré syndrome in many patients.  相似文献

An electrodeless conductivity probe has been designed and tested at temperatures up to 250 degrees C and pressures of 4.13 MPa (600 psi). A unique pressure seal permits temperature cycling. Design of the electronics permits accurate measurement of conductivities at various elevated temperatures in spite of the change of magnetic properties of the toroids with temperature. An interactive multicriterion optimization method for composite laminates subjected to multiple loading conditions is introduced. Laminate margins to initial failure (First Ply Failure, FPF) with respect of the applied loading conditions are treated as criteria. The original problem is reduced to a bicriterion problem by introducing parameters to combine linearly some criteria. The problem is solved by using an interactive descent algorithm. Both the conditions required for a discrete procedure to converge towards a Pareto optimum and numerical examples are given.  相似文献

Previous research has linked hyperlipidemia with increased serum concentrations of lipid peroxidation products; however, a specific association between diet-induced oxidative stress and hyperlipidemia has not been studied. In the present study, the relationship between tissue lipid peroxidation and hyperlipidemia induced by ingestion of fish oil was examined. In Experiment 1, male Golden Syrian hamsters were fed semipurified diets composed of 1.6 wt% safflower oil plus 15.0 wt% of either butterfat (BF), safflower oil (SAFF), or high-cholesterol menhaden oil [MHO(H-CHOL)] semipurified diets for 27 d. The cholesterol contents of the diets were adjusted to 0.088%. The MHO(H-CHOL)-fed hamsters exhibited higher serum concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, apolipoprotein B, and lipid peroxides when compared to the BF and SAFF diet groups. In a further study (Experiment 2), hamsters were fed for 27 d three dietary treatments: (i) MHO(H-CHOL) with no vitamin E content; (ii) a low-cholesterol menhaden oil containing high concentrations of vitamin E (2.5 mg tocopherol/g oil or dietary concentrations of 375 mg/kg) [MHO(L-CHOL)+E]; and (iii) the MHO(L-CHOL+E) with added cholesterol (595 mg/kg) [MHO(L-CHOL)+CHOL+E] to match the cholesterol content of the MHO(H-CHOL). The MHO(L-CHOL)+E and MHO(L-CHOL)+CHOL+E diet groups showed lower concentrations of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and hepatic lipid peroxides than the MHO(H-CHOL)-treated group. Moreover, in contrast to the hypercholesterolemia caused by the MHO(H-CHOL) feeding, the MHO(L-CHOL)+E and MHO(L-CHOL)+CHOL+ E diets did not show a serum cholesterol-elevating action. This study supports the hypothesis that oxidative stress in the Syrian hamster could play a causal role in dietary-induced hyperlipidemia which can be inhibited by high vitamin E intake.  相似文献

The authors have studied the problem of approximating a digital signal with a suitable continuous broken line. They use the approximative broken line for further analysis of the signal as detection of peaks, waves, and other structural features. They can also save considerable amount of storage space with an approximation that does not lose too much significant information about the original signal. The authors' work is based on examining different distance metrics and different segmentation methods with respect to the remaining residual error in the resulting approximation. The aim of the work has been to develop a method that can perform segmentation with an acceptable amount of residual error without a need to define a large set of parameters that control the segmentation process. The authors' contribution is to examine the effect of the estimated compression ratio of the resulting approximation and finding an estimate of this compression ratio. They first define a target in the form of a compression ratio of the resulting approximation and then by applying their method, try to find a suitable threshold parameter to achieve this target. The authors have tested their method with electrocardiogram (EGG) signals and the compression ratio of the approximation has been found to be a suitable target to control the segmentation process  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) affect cells through binding to a shared EGF receptor (EGF-R), which is a transmembrane protein with tyrosine kinase activity. They exert trophic effects on vascular endothelial, salivary acinar, and ductal and mucosal epithelial cells. In Sj?gren's syndrome (SS) focal sialadenitis leads to salivary gland tissue damage, diminished salivary flow, and changes in the oral epithelium, a complex referred to as xerostomia. We compared the localization of EGF, TGF-alpha, and EGF-R in labial salivary glands in SS and in healthy controls. METHODS: Labial salivary gland tissues of 12 patients with SS and 7 healthy controls were stained with the immunohistochemical peroxidase-antiperoxidase method for EGF, TGF-alpha, and EGF-R. RESULTS: Immunoreactivity for both EGF and TGF-alpha was found in endothelial cells of blood vessels and in some ductal epithelial cells. TGF-alpha, but not EGF, was also found in some acinar cells. EGF-R was found in endothelial, acinar, and salivary duct epithelial cells. There was no difference in the expression of EGF-R between diseased and healthy specimens, but both EGF and TGF-alpha were diminished in SS. CONCLUSION: The interrelated localization of EGF-R and its ligands, EGF and TGF-alpha, suggests an autocrine, juxtacrine, and paracrine mitogenic/trophic role for them and thus a role in the maintenance of the secretory and excretory cells of the normal salivary glands. The trophic effects on acinar cells seem not to be mediated by EGF, but more likely by TGF-alpha. The diminished expression of EGF and TGF-alpha indicates a failure of this trophic system in SS, which may contribute to the acinar atrophy and secondary changes thereof, including atrophy of the oral mucosa.  相似文献

High fat feeding reportedly enhances hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) responses to stress in adult rats. The present study tested whether elevated fat intake during suckling could have short and/or long lasting consequences on HPA regulation in the offspring. Mothers were fed either a control (C; 5% fat) or high fat (HF; 20% fat) diet during the last week of gestation and throughout lactation. After weaning (day 21), pups from C and HF mothers were fed a chow diet. Offspring from both C- and HF-fed mothers were tested for ACTH and corticosterone responses to stress on postnatal days 10 and 35. We found that HF feeding produced higher lipid levels in the milk of HF compared with C lactating rat dams and that offspring of these mothers had significantly increased retroperitoneal fat pad weight and relative adipose mass on day 21 as well as elevated plasma leptin levels on days 10 and 21 of age. After weaning, pups from the HF mothers had lower plasma leptin levels than those from C mothers. Maternal dietary fat affected HPA responsiveness in the offspring in an age-related manner. Neonatal pups (day 10) from the HF mothers exhibited a reduction in the ACTH and corticosterone responses to ether stress. However, in 35-day-old offspring from HF-fed dams, stress-induced ACTH secretion was increased compared with that in pups from the C-fed mothers. These results demonstrate that maternal diet and increased fat intake through the milk are important regulators of HPA responsiveness in neonates and prepubertal rats. During neonatal life, the blunted stress responsiveness seen with elevated fat intake and the resulting high leptin levels might protect the pups from excessive HPA activation. After removal of the maternal dietary influence and reduced leptin levels, enhanced ACTH stress responses are observed as in adult rats fed a HF diet. Because of the inverse relationship between plasma levels of leptin and HPA responses in pups, the possibility exists that the effects of the HF diet on stress responsiveness are mediated by changes in leptin exposure during development.  相似文献

Chronic butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) treatment after a single administration of a carcinogen increases lung tumor multiplicity in some inbred strains of mice. We report that BALB/cOla and BALB/cByJ mice given a low dose (10 microg/g of body weight) of 3-methylcholanthrene (MCA) develop no lung tumors unless this is followed by chronic BHT exposure. Slightly higher MCA doses (15 and 25 microg/g) induce low lung tumor multiplicities (0.6 and 1.9 tumors/mouse, respectively) that are increased 12-26-fold by chronic BHT administration. This low-dose MCA/BHT model in BALB mice will facilitate the identification of genes regulating susceptibility to lung tumor promotion and pulmonary chemopreventative agents that act at a postinitiation site.  相似文献
