A model of the pathways controlling the size of the human pupil is presented. Computer simulation of this model demonstrates the role played by each of the elements in the pupil pathways. Simulations of the effects of drugs and a few common abnormalities in the system also help to illustrate the workings of the internal processes. Computer models of this type can be used as teaching aids or as tools for testing of hypotheses regarding the system.  相似文献

Spinal cord injury can lead to an exaggeration of transmission through spinal pathways, resulting in muscle spasticity, chronic pain, and abnormal control of blood pressure and bladder function. These conditions are mediated, in part, by N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors on spinal neurons, but the effects of cord injury on the expression or function of these receptors is unknown. Therefore, antibodies to the NMDA-R1 receptor subunit and binding of [3H]MK-801 were used to assess NMDA receptors in the spinal cord. Receptor density in rats with intact spinal cords was compared to that in rats 1 and 2 weeks after spinal cord transection (SCT) at the mid-thoracic level. At 1 and 2 weeks after SCT, [3H]MK-801 binding was reduced in most laminae in cord segments caudal to the injury, whereas no decrease in amount of R1 subunit immunoreactivity was observed. No significant changes in [3H]MK-801 binding and NMDA-R1 immunoreactivity could be seen rostral to the transection. Since [3H]MK-801 binding requires an open ion channel, the discrepancy between [3H]MK-801 binding and immunocytochemistry may indicate a loss of functional receptors without a consistent change in their total number. Therefore, the exaggerated reflexes that are well established in rats 2 weeks after cord injury must be mediated by a mechanism that withstands attenuation of NMDA receptor function.  相似文献

Double exposure holographic interferometry (DEHI) is used to determine the strain energy release rate, craze opening displacement profile, and craze stress profile ofn-heptane and methanol crazes growing from cracks in polystyrene.n-heptane crazes have strain energy release rates (SERRs) close to those of cracks and their stress profile is almost crack-like in that the tensile stress across the craze falls almost to zero. On the other hand, the SERRs of methanol crazes are only 30 to 55% the SERR of a crack depending on stress intensity factorK I of the precrack from which they are grown. The stress profile of the methanol craze shows it to be strongly load-bearing away from the craze tip, apparently as a result of the strain hardening of the craze fibrils. The stress concentration in front of the methanol craze tip is only 40% of that in front of then-heptane craze tip. The opening displacements of the methanol craze are almost as large as those of a crack very near its tip but are much less than those of a crack at large distances behind the tip. The Dugdale model of a strip yielding zone provides a poor representation of the craze opening displacements of the growing methanol craze. Dry (static) methanol crazes have larger opening displacements in response to an incremental tensile strain at moderate prestrains than at either low or high prestrains, suggesting that the craze fibrils undergo a yielding/strain-hardening process as the strain is increased similar to that observed in polycarbonate crazes by Kopp and Kambour. Dryn-heptane crazes do not show this response but rather open linearly with increasing prestrain. The opening displacement for long (dry)n-heptane crazes is almost crack-like whereas the largest opening of a dry methanol craze is only 20% of that of a crack. Dry methanol crazes break at aK IC that is 40% of theK IC of precracked but uncrazed specimens. The strongest (shortest) dryn-heptane crazes fail at only 7% ofK IC of uncrazed specimens and theK IC of the dryn-heptane crazes decreases markedly with increasing craze length.  相似文献

The structure of crazes grown in polystyrene (PS) immersed inn-heptane and methanol at room temperature has been determined using refractive index measurements, transmission electron microscopy, and fractographic analysis of craze fracture surfaces.n-heptane crazes in thin films exhibit a low number density of thick, load-bearing fibrils whereas methanol crazes consist of a highly interconnected network of fibrils not unlike the craze structure found in crazes grown in air. A row of large voids at the centre line of the craze which is typical of the structure observed in air crazes is not found, however, in either methanol orn-heptane crazes, indicating a different growth mechanism for the solvent crazes. The craze structure found in thin films is in agreement with the void contents determined from refractive index measurements and with the results from scanning electron microscopy of fracture surfaces of bulk crazes grown with methanol andn-heptane. Glass transition temperature measurements of equilibrium swollen PS films giveT g=91° C for methanol andT g=6° C forn-heptane. The results suggest that the structure of crazes grown with slowly diffusing crazing agents (methanol andn-heptane) is strongly dependent on whether the growth temperature is above or belowT g, the glass transition temperature of the plasticized region just ahead of, and in, the craze. IfT g is below the growth temperature, weak crazes are formed with a large void content. During the growth, thin fibrils break by viscous flow leaving only a small number of load-bearing fibrils. The stress in the neighbourhood of the growing craze is strongly relieved favouring propagation of a single craze. IfT g is above the growth te'mperature, strong crazes are formed with the fibrils strain-hardened during the growth process. There is hardly any change in stress next to the craze and therefore multiple crazing (craze bundles) is favoured over the propagation of a single craze.  相似文献

We conducted a randomized trial of portable HEPA air cleaners with pre-filters designed to also reduce NH3 in non-smoking homes of children age 6-12 with asthma in Yakima Valley (Washington, USA). Participants were recruited through the Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic asthma education program. All participants received education on home triggers while intervention families additionally received two HEPA cleaners (child's sleeping area, main living area). Fourteen-day integrated samples of PM2.5 and NH3 were measured at baseline and one-year follow-up. We fit ANCOVA models to compare follow-up concentrations in HEPA vs control homes, adjusting for baseline concentrations. Seventy-one households (36 HEPA, 35 control) completed the study. Most were single-family homes, with electric heat and stove, A/C, dogs/cats, and mean (SD) 5.3 (1.8) occupants. In the sleeping area, baseline geometric mean (GSD) PM2.5 was 10.7 (2.3) μg/m3 (HEPA) vs 11.2 (1.9) μg/m3 (control); in the living area, it was 12.5 (2.3) μg/m3 (HEPA) vs 13.6 (1.9) μg/m3 (control). Baseline sleeping area NH3 was 62.4 (1.6) μg/m3 (HEPA) vs 65.2 (1.8) μg/m3 (control). At follow-up, HEPA families had 60% (95% CI, 41%-72%; p < .0001) and 42% (19%-58%; p = .002) lower sleeping and living area PM2.5, respectively, consistent with prior studies. Cross-correlation techniques have been used for years to identify the kernels of Volterra and Wiener nonlinear functional series. This note proposes a modification to the standard cross-correlation method which improves the estimation of the diagonal elements of the kernels. The mathematical derivation is given and simulations are presented, which show that modification improves the kernel estimates with very little increase in computational cost.  相似文献

Several space-diversity techniques combined with maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) are considered for time-division multiple-access (TDMA) digital mobile radio. Under the assumption that diversity paths fade independently, the Nth order diversity maximum-likelihood (ML) receiver is analyzed. Two categories of diversity receivers with MLSE are taken into account: the receivers performing diversity on the signal samples and those applying diversity inherently in the sequential algorithm. The simulation study was performed for standard global system for mobile communication (GSM) channel models. The results confirm the fact that even second-order diversity is a very powerful means improving the TDMA system performance  相似文献
