A monolithically integrated optical differential amplifier forapplications in smart pixel arrays

A cascadable, optical differential amplifier with an active output is realized in AlGaAs-GaAs by the monolithic integration of three devices: A photodiode (PD), a light-emitting diode (LED) and a combination of a photodiode and a junction field-effect transistor (PINFET). A minimum optical switching power of 15 pW, an optical gain of more than 10⁶, a contrast ratio greater than 1000 and an optical output power of 17 μW are obtained. For a contrast ratio of 10, a switching energy of 2 pJ is required, resulting in a unity gain bandwidth of 4.2 MHz

Verhalten von Mauerwerksbauten unter Erdbebeneinwirkung: Auswertung der Schäden des Albstadt‐Erdbebens vom 3. September 1978

Numerische Untersuchungen zum Verhalten von Mauerwerksbauten unter Erdbebeneinwirkung führen oft zu pessimistischen Schadensprognosen, welche im Gegensatz zu den Beobachtungen stehen. Um diesen Widerspruch aufzulösen, werden erfahrungsbasierte Verletzbarkeitsfunktionen für typische Mauerwerksgebäude auf der Grundlage der durch das Erdbeben vom 3. September 1978 bei Albstadt (mit einer Lokalmagnitude M_L von 5,7 und Epizentralintensität I₀ = VII—VIII) verursachten Schäden entwickelt. Anhand des Bauwerksbestandes von 1978 erfolgt die Einordnung der beobachteten Schäden in Schadensgrade auf Basis der European Macroseismic Scale EMS‐98 [1]. Die für den Bauwerksbestand repräsentativen Bauweisen werden herausgearbeitet; für die vorherrschenden Gebäude aus unbewehrtem Mauerwerk ist eine weitere Unterscheidung nach Baualter, Geschosszahl und phänomenologischen Gesichtspunkten möglich. Vulnerability of masonry structures under seismic action: Damage analysis of the September 3, 1978 Albstadt earthquake. Numerical studies of the earthquake behavior of masonry buildings in Central Europe based on national building codes acc. to the Eurocode 8 lead to pessimistic damage prognoses, which are in contradiction to the observed behavior. In order to eliminate this discrepancy realistic experience‐based vulnerability and displacement functions for typical masonry constructions are developed. Because of the rather limited number of earthquake damage observations, the Magnitude M_L 5.7 Albstadt earthquake from September 3, 1978 (intensity VII—VIII) in South Germany also based on its excellent documentation is reconstructed with the building stock existing at that time. The prevailing building types and for these the characteristic damage cases are investigated in close cooperation with the local authorities. The presented unreinforced masonry structures are divided by year of construction, number of storeys and phenomenological aspects.     

Partially unfolded proteins efficiently penetrate cell membranes--implications for oral drug delivery

We have previously reported on the biological activity of members of a library of low molecular weight compounds (carriers) that enable the oral delivery of proteins (Milstein, Proceedings of the 1995 Miami Bio/Technology Winter Symposium on Protein Engineering and Structural Biology, IRL Press at Oxford University Press, 1995, p. 13; Leone-Bay et al., J. Med. Chem. 38 (1995) 4263-4269; Leone-Bay et al., J. Med. Chem. 39 (1996) 2571-2578; [1-3]). When rats or primates are orally administered a solution of carrier and either recombinant human alpha-interferon (rhIFN), insulin or recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) significant serum concentrations of the proteins are detectable. The transport activity of these compounds is positively correlated with their structural effects on the protein molecules. Direct measurement of the interaction of these carrier molecules with the proteins indicates that they reversibly destabilize the native state of the molecule favoring a partially unfolded conformation. Apparently these intermediate protein conformations are transport competent and are able to be absorbed through the intestinal tissue and into the bloodstream. Since the measured binding of the carriers to the partially unfolded proteins is relatively weak (Kb = 100 M(-1)) and the systemic activity of the proteins appears to be unaffected, the changes in the structure of the proteins are manifestly reversible.     

Direct frequency modulation of an ADPLL for bluetooth/GSM with injection pulling elimination

We propose and demonstrate a Gaussian frequency-shift keying and Gaussian minimum-shift keying (GMSK) pulse-shape filtering for wireless RF transmitters with an arbitrary reference frequency. The filter is software controlled to work in a multistandard radio. Spurs, which are due to the frequency injection pulling, in cases when the reference harmonics are close enough to the oscillating frequency, are avoided by means of retiming the reference clock by the RF oscillator. Baseband clock for the pulse-shape filtering is derived through a simple fractional-N division of the reference frequency. This saves area and power since it is no longer required to create a low-jitter clock for baseband symbol generation and modulating data. It is especially advantageous when the available reference frequency is not an integer multiple of the symbol rate. The presented transmitter is realized without any explicit analog filtering and is part of a commercial single-chip fully compliant Bluetooth radio fabricated in a digital 130-nm CMOS process. We demonstrate the software programming capability through an experimental GMSK modulation for the global system for mobile communication.
