Personal reminiscences of a psychologist married couple on changing perspectives in 20 years of professional psychology.

The authors describe their perspectives as a psychologist married couple and discuss some of the major trends that have affected their work in the last years, including the women's movement and new developments in the field of psychology. They note both positive and negative changes from the last 2 decades. Whereas there are many more new and exciting opportunities for psychologists today, there are also more pressures, more stringent training and credentialing requirements, more competition, and less mobility. Also discussed are some advantages to being married to another psychologist, including understanding each other's roles, combining social and professional lives, and expanding professional networks. They look to the future of psychology with optimism and hope that by examining and changing some of the restrictions on psychologists today, the field of professional psychology can be made more rewarding for future psychologists. Identification of delayed system using instrumental variable method

System identification uses system inputs and outputs to raise mathematical models.Various techniques of system identification exist that offer a nominal model and an uncertainty bound.Many practical systems such as thermal processes & chemical processes have inbuilt time delay.If the time delay used in the system model for controller design does not concur with the actual process time delay,a closed-loop system may be unstable or demonstrate unacceptable transient response characteristics so here the time delay is assumed to be time-invariant. This paper proposes on-line identification of delayed complex/uncertain systems using instrumental variable(Ⅳ) method.Parametric uncertainty has been considered which may be represented by variations of certain system parameters over some possible range.This method allows consistent estimation when the system parameters are associated with the noise terms,as the IV methods(IVM’s)usually make no assumption on the noise correlation configuration.The faster convergence of the parameters including noise terms has been proved in this paper.Iterative prefiltering(IP)method has also been used for the identification of the delayed uncertain system and the graphical results given in this paper demonstrate that the convergence results are inferior to the instrumental variable method.     

13C n.m.r. spectra of some poly(N-acyliminoalkenes)

¹³C n.m.r. spectra are reported for six poly(N-acyliminoalkenes), N(COR) (CH)₂)_n (n = 2, R = H, CH₃, C₆H₅; n = 3, R = H, C₆H₅), and N(COC₆H₅)CH(CH₃)CH₂ (isotactic and atactic), and compared with that for poly(N-formyliminopropylene). These linear polymers were made by the isomerization polymerization of the appropriate oxazoline or oxazine derivatives. For the polymers with N-formyl or N-acetyl side groups the spectra of the main chain carbons show fine structure resulting from restricted rotation about the two nearest N-COR bonds. This fine structure shows a small temperature dependence and in some cases there are indications of the influence of a third N-COR group at the lower temperatures. For the polymers with N-benzoyl side groups the rotation of these groups is less restricted than for N-formyl and N-acetyl and at 120°C no fine structure is observed except that resulting from tacticity in atactic poly(N-benzoyliminopropylene), where the carbonyl and main-chain carbons exhibit partly resolved triad structure. At lower temperatures some of the lines broaden because of restricted rotation. In the model compound N-ethyl-N-methylbenzamide all eight types of carbon atom give two lines at ?30°C (in CDCl₃), the two conformers being present in the approximate ratio 58:42. The pairs of lines coalesce in turn as the temperature is raised to 50°C. Spin-lattice relaxation times were measured for the carbon nuclei in poly(N-formyliminoethylene), in N-ethyl-N-methylformamide and in N-isopropyl-N-n-propylformamide. T₁ values increase by two orders of magnitude in going from the polymer to dimethylformamide. ¹³C chemical shifts are recorded for seven oxazoline and two oxazine derivatives as well as for six model compounds of the polymers.     

Speed Control of DC Motor with MRPID Controller in the Presence of Noise

Speed control of a DC motor has always been a challenge because of its variable torque. But it becomes more challenging when noise enters the system at its input. Therefore, there is a need of more advanced controllers. In this paper, a multi-resolution proportional integral derivative (MRPID) controller has been proposed to be utilized to control the speed of a DC motor. It works well even in the presence of noise as compared to the conventional PID controller. Also, performance of a PID controller deteriorates when nonlinearity or uncertainty arises in the system. This degraded performance can be improved by utilizing the multi-resolution property of wavelets, which decomposes the error signal into various frequency components. Further, wavelet coefficients of these decompositions are used to generate the control signal for controlling speed of a DC motor. In this paper, performances of a MRPID, a fractional order PID (FOPID) and a conventional PID controllers are compared in the presence of noise for speed control of a DC motor. The results obtained using a MRPID controller are observed to be better in terms of improved transient characteristics and disturbance rejection for a DC motor as compared to those obtained with PID and FOPID controllers.

     

Surgical salvage after radiation for laryngeal cancer

From January, 1962, through December, 1973, 1,084 patients with cancer of the intrinsic larynx were treated at the Mayo Clinic. Of the 1,084 patients, 136 were retreated after radiation therapy failed to cure their cancer (105 glottic, 30 supraglottic, and one subglottic cancers). Recurrence of glottic cancer was generally recognized later than recurrences in the supraglottic area; likewise, glottic cancers were more advanced at recurrence than supraglottic growths. When feasible, conservation surgery was carried out on both glottic and supraglottic growths. Unfortunately, many growths were too advanced for conservation surgery by the time recurrence was recognized. The concept of "radiate-and-watch" for early glottic and supraglottic cancers is designed to save larynges. The concept is not supported by this study.     

A-B therapists and clinical perception: Support for a "super A" hypothesis.

Classified 6 male therapists from a group of 20 in training as Type A and 6 as Type B. Ss predicted responses and other behaviors of a neurotic and a schizophrenic once from partial information and again from more complete diagnostic data. Results support the hypothesis that As are more effective than Bs with schizophrenics but both types are comparably successful with neurotics. Further validation of a Rorschach measure of oral imagery: A study of six clinical groups.

Rorschach responses of psychiatric outpatients, selected from those clinical groups where psychoanalytic theory suggests a history of early oral difficulty, examined for oral imagery. Ss included: 23 heavy drinkers, with 9 diagnosed as alcoholic; 6 asthmatic; 13 obese; 6 stuttering; 10 ulcer; and 16 thumbsucking patients. For each experimental S, a control S of the same sex was chosen, matched on age, education, marital status, and diagnosis. Results show that the obese, stuttering, ulcer Ss, and the alcoholic subsample produced significantly more oral dependent Rorschach responses than their controls. Sexism in graduate admissions: The letter of recommendation.

Two experienced raters examined the letters of recommendation of 38 female and 85 male students admitted to graduate study for sexist comments. Examples of sexist statements made in regard to female candidates are presented. The effect of such statements on admissions and retention is discussed. PRECISE MEASUREMENTS OF THE VISCOSITIES OF GLASSES AT TEMPERATURES NEAR THEIR ANNEALING POINTS*

The paper describes a new apparatus for measuring glass viscosities of 10¹³ poises and higher. It consists of causing the glass flow to take place inside a steel tube by means of air pressure. The amount of flow is observed by means of interference fringes between the top of the glass sample and a stationary plate of fused silica. Preliminary experiments with two glasses, a lime and a light flint, are described and the results given. A comparison is also made between results by this method and by that of fiber elongation. The new results indicate that the apparatus can he successfully used for observing flow-pressure relations at extremely high viscosities and also that at the temperatures used these two glasses are purely viscous liquids.
