OBJECTIVE: To describe a mother and her 2 sons affected by idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), associated in the sons with root irritation symptom. Unlike the other 4 families reported previously, obesity was not present in our patients. DESIGN: Case reports. SETTING: Department of pediatrics in a university school of Medicine, Naples, Italy. PATIENTS: A mother (aged 36 years) and her 2 sons (aged 14 and 9 years) developed IIH at different times. Neuroimaging showed an empty sella in the mother, while IIH was associated with spinal and radicular pain in her 2 sons. The mother and the younger son developed permanent visual loss. CONCLUSIONS: Ophthalmologic follow-up in our patients indicates that IIH is a chronic disease. Surgical treatment should be considered an option.  相似文献

In this work we present a structural, optical and electrical characterization of SixC1?x/SiC multilayer systems with different silicon content. After the deposition process, an annealing treatment was carried out in order to induce the silicon nanocrystals formation. By means of energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) we observed the structural morphology of the multilayers and the presence of crystallized silicon nanoprecipitates for samples annealed up to 1100 °C. We discuss the suitability of optical techniques such as Raman scattering and reflectance and transmittance (R&T) for the evaluation of the crystalline fraction of our samples at different silicon excess ranges. In addition, the combination of R&T measurements with simulation has proved to be a useful instrument to confirm the structural properties observed by EFTEM. Finally, we explore the origin of the extremely high current density revealed by electrical measurements, probably due to the presence of an undesired defective SiCyOz ternary compound layer, already supported by the structural and optical results. Nevertheless, the variation of the electrical measurements with the silicon amount indicates a small but significant contribution from the multilayers.  相似文献

Silicon carbide and silicon rich carbide (SiC and SRC) thin films were prepared by PECVD and annealed at 1100 °C. Such a treatment, when applied to SiC/SRC multilayers, aimed at the formation of silicon nanocrystals, that have attracted considerable attention as tunable band-gap materials for photovoltaic applications. Optical and structural techniques (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Reflectance and Transmittance, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy) were used to evidence the formation, during the annealing treatment in nominally inert atmosphere, of a parasitic ternary SiOxCy surface compound, that consumed part of the originally deposited material and behaved as a preferential conductive path with respect to the nanocrystal layer in horizontal electrical conductivity measurements. The SiOxCy compound was HF-resistant, with composition dependent on the underlying matrix. It gave rise to a Si-O related vibration in FTIR analysis, that may be misinterpreted as due to silicon oxide. The compound, if neglected, can affect the structural and electrical characterization of the material.To overcome this problem, a procedure is analyzed, based on the deposition of a sacrificial capping a-Si:H layer that partially oxidizes, and is removed by tetra methyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) after annealing. XPS analysis revealed that the resulting surface is mainly made up of SiC regardless of the composition of the underlying SRC layer. Subsequent SF6:O2 dry etching results in a porous SiC-rich surface layer. The proposed method is effective in controlling the SRC surface configuration, and allows the performance of reliable optical and electrical characterization.  相似文献

Hereditary predisposition to thrombosis due to activated protein C resistance (APCR) has been attributed to a missense mutation in the factor V gene at nucleotide 1691 (G to A), causing replacement of arginine at codon 506 with glutamine. Using an RFLP-PCR assay to detect this mutation, we measured a prevalence of 3.3% in healthy Caucasians and 1.25% in healthy African-Americans. In addition, we evaluated a total of 90 consecutive specimens submitted to the coagulation laboratory at the Medical College of Virginia for the presence of this mutation. We compared our results for 78 of these specimens with the values measured by a modified partial thromboplastin assay, the COATEST. Twelve of the 90 samples could not be tested using the COATEST because the patients were undergoing anticoagulant therapy. One of the latter 12 specimens was positive by the RFLP-PCR test. Using the genetic test as the definitive assay and the cutoff value established for distinguishing between normal and abnormal results by the COATEST, the COATEST had a sensitivity of 50% and specificity of 93% for the detection of factor V mutation. Analysis of the 90 samples stratified by ethnic groups revealed a frequency of mutation of 13.3% for Caucasians and 6.88% for African-Americans, although with the present sample size, the difference was not statistically significant. Although the COATEST is technically simpler to perform than the genetic test for diagnosing the presence of the factor V mutation, its use for this purpose is limited due to low sensitivity. Thus where this disorder is clinically suspected, submission of the specimen directly for genetic testing by RFLP-PCR or equivalent assay should be considered.  相似文献

The preparation of photosensitive surfaces in phototubes is generally perfoemed with alkali metal dispensers (AMDs). Since a very well controlled evaporation flow rate of the alkali vapours released from AMDs are of great importance, a method based on the atomic absorption technique, has been developed for its accurate measurement. This method can overcome some limitations of other methods such as those based on the work function change of cathodes in the presence of alkali vapours. The test AMD is mounted in a specifically designed glass cell which is evacuated and baked overnight at 350°C to have a residual pressure in the range of 10?6 Pa. The cell is provided with a Ba getter to ensure a good vacuum, essential for the application of this technique, and with an Sb generator to capture the alkali metal vapour. After tip-off, the cell is mounted on the atomic absorption spectrophotometer in the burner position. An absorption signal is generated by the alkali atoms released by the AMD, when they intercept a monochromatic light beam resonant with the alkali metal. With an appropriate calibration the absorption signal can be converted into evaporation flow rate. This technique has been applied to the study of caesium generators and practical results are given. The sensitivity of the method is a flow of about 1 μg min?1.  相似文献

Chemoresistance is a hallmark of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) management and the expression of ALDH1A3 is responsible for the survival and activity of MPM chemoresistant cell subpopulations (ALDHbright cells). We enriched mesothelioma ALDHbright cells to near homogeneity by FACS sorting and an Aldefluor assay and performed unbiased Affymetrix gene expression profiling. Viability and ELISA assays were used to rule out significant apoptosis in the sorted cell subpopulations and to assess target engagement by butein. Statistical analysis of the results, pathway enrichment and promoter enrichment were employed for the generation of the data. Q-RTPCR was used to validate a subset of the identified, modulated mRNAs In this work, we started from the observation that the mRNA levels of the ALDH1A3 isoform could prognostically stratify MPM patients. Thus, we purified MPM ALDHbright cells from NCI-H2595 cells and interrogated their gene expression (GES) profile. We analyzed the GES of the purified cells at both a steady state and upon treatment with butein (a multifunctional tetrahydroxy-chalcone), which abates the ALDHbright cell number, thereby exerting chemo-sensitizing effects in vitro and in vivo. We identified 924 genes modulated in a statistically significant manner as a function of ALDH status and of the response to the inhibitor. Pathway and promoter enrichment identified the molecular determinant of high ALDH status and how butein treatment altered the molecular portrait of those chemoresistant cell subpopulations. Further, we unraveled an eighteen-gene signature with high prognostic significance for MPM patients, and showed that most of the identified prognostic contributors escaped the analysis of unfractionated samples. This work proves that digging into the unexplored field of intra-tumor heterogeneity (ITH) by working at the cell subpopulation level may provide findings of prognostic relevance, in addition to mechanistic insights into tumor resistance to therapy.  相似文献

The allowable capacity of conventional roof-to-wall metal connectors is based on results of unidirectional component tests that do not simulate triaxial aerodynamic loading effects induced by high-wind events. The results of wind and wind-driven rain tests conducted at a full-scale facility were used to create a database on aerodynamic and aerohydrodynamic load effects on roof-to-wall connectors. Based on these results, three axial mean force components (triaxial mean loads) were combined into a series of resultant mean force vectors. A new test protocol was then developed for roof-to-wall connectors under simulated triaxial loading as opposed to simple uniaxial loading. The findings confirm that current testing methods tend to overestimate the actual load capacities of metal connectors. The performance of a nonintrusive roof-to-wall connector system using fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) ties was also tested and compared with that of a traditional metal connector under simulated aerodynamic loads. The test results demonstrated the validity of FRP ties as an alternative to hurricane clips for use in timber roof-to-wall connection systems.  相似文献

There is a need in the explosives detection community for an insensitive, storage-stable source of triacetone triperoxide (TATP). To achieve this, the solvent evaporation microencapsulation technique was used to disperse TATP in a plastic matrix. This lowered the shock sensitivity greatly and prevented loss of TATP at room temperature, allowing for easy long-term storage. It was then demonstrated that pure TATP vapor was released on demand from the matrix by heating.  相似文献

In 71 subjects with vascular atherosclerotic disease (VAD), in 32 VAD subjects with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and in 31 normal controls, we evaluated polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) membrane fluidity and PMN cytosolic Ca2+ content. The PMN membrane fluidity was obtained by marking intact and unstimulated PMN cells with fluorescent probe 1-[4-(trimethylamino)phenyl]-6-phenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (TMA-DPH) and the PMN cytosolic Ca2+ content was obtained by marking intact and unstimulated PMN cells with the fluorescent probe Fura 2-AM. From the obtained results, it is evident that PMN membrane fluidity does not differentiate normals from VAD subjects and VAD subjects with NIDDM, and normals from subjects with monovascular disease (MVAD) and polyvascular disease (PVAD) with and without NIDDM. The PMN cytosolic Ca2+ content is significantly increased in VAD subjects and VAD subjects with NIDDM, and also in MVAD and PVAD subjects with and without NIDDM. A positive correlation is present between PMN membrane fluidity and PMN cytosolic Ca2+ content in normals and VAD subjects, but not in VAD subjects with NIDDM. In conclusion, in VAD subjects with and without NIDDM, an increase of the PMN cytosolic Ca2+ content is present; this increase might be related to the PMN spontaneous activation.  相似文献
