Alfalfa was harvested in large round bales or small square bales and storage and feeding losses were determined for different storage methods. Large bales were stored 1) in a barn; 2) outside in single rows and uncovered; 3) outside in two-high stacks and covered; and 4) outside in three-high stacks and covered. These bales were fed to dairy heifers with small square bales for comparison. Dry matter storage losses were 2% for large bales stored inside, 6% for large bales stored outside covered, and 15% for large bales stored outside uncovered. Feeding losses of large bales were 12% for stored inside, 25% for stored outside uncovered, and 13 to 15% for stored outside covered. Total losses for large round bales were 40% (stored outside uncovered), 20% (stored outside covered) and 15% (stored inside). Intake and gains were greatest for small bales (2.35 kg/100 kg body weight and .77 kg/d, respectively) and least for large bales (2.11 kg/100 kg body weight and .54 kg/d) stored outside uncovered.Rain penetrated 10 to 25 cm into uncovered bales stored outside. The resulting weathered hay, about 40% of the original bale dry weight, deteriorated. Heifers rummaged through this unpalatable material, and large feeding losses resulted. Storage and feeding losses of large round bales stored outside are economically important enough to warrant protection of bales.  相似文献

A new technique of coherent optics, speckle photography, has been applied to the study of the behavior of adhesive joints under shear stress. This technique allows the determination of the in-plane motion by a point-by-point analysis with a sensitivity of about 3 μm. This property has been used to measure the interfacial displacement of model glass-glass joints bonded by different types of adhesive when submitted to shear. The experimental results permit direct verification of Volkersen's theory as well as the determination of the actual shear modull of the thin adhesive layer. The simplicity of use and interpretation of the technique of speckle photography should lead to significant application of this method in the future for the study of adhesive joints.  相似文献

This paper presents a fully Bayesian approach that simultaneously combines non-overlapping (in time) basic event and higher-level event failure data in fault tree quantification. Such higher-level data often correspond to train, subsystem or system failure events. The fully Bayesian approach also automatically propagates the highest-level data to lower levels in the fault tree. A simple example illustrates our approach. The optimal allocation of resources for collecting additional data from a choice of different level events is also presented. The optimization is achieved using a genetic algorithm.  相似文献

Missouri-96 and Kentucky-31 hays were chopped with a tub grinder containing screens with apertures of 31, 63, or 100 mm in diameter and fed to dairy cows or heifers. Particle sizes (geometric mean diameter) were 1218, 1486, and 1933 micron, respectively, for the 31, 63, and 100-mm treatments. In Trial 1, the six treatments were fed ad libitum to 24 lactating cows; concentrate was offered at 1 kg/2 kg of milk. Dry matter intake and NDF digestibility were greater for Kentucky-31, but there were no other effects of variety. Particle size did not affect DM intake, DM or fiber digestibility, nitrogen partition, milk yield, or milk fat percentage. Crude protein digestibility was greatest for the 63-mm particle size treatment. In trial 2, the six treatments were fed ad libitum to 24 dairy heifers. Intake was greater for the 31 than for the 100-mm treatment but was unaffected by variety. Variety and particle size did not affect DM digestibility, nitrogen utilization, or daily gain. In this study fescue hay chopped through screens having apertures ranging from 31 to 100 mm was without effect on milk yield or composition. Reducing particle size increased intake and nitrogen utilization but not DM or fiber digestibility.  相似文献

A new numerical method for solving the inverse problem of internal dosimetry is described. The new method uses Markov Chain Monte Carlo and the Metropolis algorithm. Multiple intake amounts, biokinetic types, and times of intake are determined from bioassay data by integrating over the Bayesian posterior distribution. The method appears definitive, but its application requires a large amount of computing time.  相似文献

A crossover design was implemented using four nonlactating dairy cows [mean body weight (BW) = 678 kg] and two rations to measure the true absorption of Ca and P from corn silage. True absorption was calculated after dosing cows intravenously with 45Ca and 32P to measure endogenous fecal losses. Rations consisted mainly of corn silage and were formulated to supply 32 g/d of Ca and 20 g/d of P or 16 g/d of Ca and 12 g/d of P. The percentages of total Ca and P that came from corn silage were 95 and 77%, respectively, for ration 1, and 98 and 79%, respectively, for ration 2. Cows ate more dry matter (10.9 vs. 10.2 kg/d) when consuming the corn silage in ration 1 than when consuming the corn silage in ration 2. Calcium intake was greater for cows fed ration 1 than for cows fed ration 2 (32.6 vs. 16.1 g/d), and P intake was greater for cows fed ration 1 than for cows fed ration 2 (20.1 vs. 11.7 g/d). True absorption of Ca was 34.4 and 43.7% for rations 1 and 2, respectively, and true absorption of P was 84.5 and 93.9% for rations 1 and 2, respectively. True absorption of Ca was about equal to values currently used in the National Research Council (NRC) feeding standards, but true absorption of P was higher than values currently used by the NRC. Fecal endogenous excretion of Ca (mean = 8.23 mg/kg of BW per d) was one-half of the value currently used by the NRC, and fecal endogenous excretion of P (mean = 7.23 mg/kg of BW per d) was only slightly less than NRC values.  相似文献

An autonomous sensor for long-term in situ measurements of the pH of natural waters is described. The system is based upon spectrophotometric measurements of a mixture of sample and sulfonephthalein indicator. A simple plumbing design, using a small, low-power solenoid pump and valve, avoids the need for quantitative addition of indicator. A approximately 50-microL slug of indicator is pulled into the sample stream by the pump, and subsequent pumping and mixing results in a section of indicator and sample where absorbance measurements can be made. The design also permits direct determination of the indicator pH perturbation. Absorbances are recorded at three wavelengths (439, 579, and 735 nm) using a custom-built 1.7-cm path length fiber-optic flow cell. Solution blanks are obtained by periodically flushing the cell with sample. Field tests were performed in a local river over an 8-day period. The in situ accuracy, based on comparison with laboratory spectrophotometric pH measurements, was -0.003 pH unit (n = 16), similar to the measurement precision. No drift was observed during the 8-day period. The absorbance ratio used to calculate pH, in combination with a simple and robust optical design, imparts an inherent stability not achievable with conventional potentiometric methods, making the design feasible for long-term autonomous pH measurements.  相似文献

The problem of choosing a prior distribution for the Bayesian interpretation of measurements (specifically internal dosimetry measurements) is considered using a theoretical analysis and by examining historical tritium and plutonium urine bioassay data from Los Alamos. Two models for the prior probability distribution are proposed: (1) the log-normal distribution, when there is some additional information to determine the scale of the true result, and (2) the 'alpha' distribution (a simplified variant of the gamma distribution) when there is not. These models have been incorporated into version 3 of the Bayesian internal dosimetry code in use at Los Alamos (downloadable from our web site). Plutonium internal dosimetry at Los Alamos is now being done using prior probability distribution parameters determined self-consistently from population averages of Los Alamos data.  相似文献

Bilberry is a characteristic field layer species in the boreal forests and is an important forage plant for herbivores of the North European ecosystem. Bilberry leaves contain high levels of phenolic compounds, especially hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, catechins, and proanthocyanidins. We investigated the phenolic composition of bilberry leaves in two studies, one following foliar development in forest and open areas, and the other along a wide geographical gradient from south to north boreal forests in Finland. An analysis of bilberry leaves collected in open and forest areas showed that major phenolic changes appeared in the first stages of leaf development, but, most importantly, synthesis and accumulation of flavonoids was delayed in the forest compared to the high light sites. Sampling along a geographical gradient in the boreal zone indicated that leaves from higher latitudes and higher altitudes had greater soluble phenolic and flavonol levels, higher antioxidant capacity, and lower contents of chlorogenic acid derivatives. The ecological significance of the results is discussed.  相似文献
