Argues that J. Langenbucher and P. E. Nathan (see record 1984-12497-001) misinterpreted an established legal standard in their study of the reliability of blood-alcohol judgments by hosts, bartenders, and police officers. Their error was in the assumption that dramshop laws and related Alcohol Beverage Control laws assume that any service to a person whose blood-alcohol level is over .10 is prohibited. Ethylene oxide (EO) gas is widely used in hospitals to sterilize certain moisture- and heat-sensitive materials. Based on scientific studies indicating its potential as a human carcinogen and mutagen, and the possible genotoxic, reproductive, neurologic, and sensitization hazards associated with EO exposure, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has recently lowered the permissible exposure limit (PEL) from 50 ppm to 1 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA). This standard also established an "action level" of 0.5 ppm for an 8-hour TWA, below which employers are exempted from such requirements as periodic employee exposure monitoring or medical surveillance. These much lower concentrations of EO in air now place greater demands upon the analytical techniques used to monitor exposure of hospital personnel to EO. In this study, the capabilities of five EO diffusion monitors were examined in the TWA concentration range of 0.25-3.7 ppm. Both accuracy and precision were tested by exposing these devices simultaneously to measured concentrations of EO in a stainless steel exposure chamber. Temperature and humidity conditions were controlled, as was the flow rate of the gases across the sampling areas of the diffusion monitors. All of the monitors tested were sensitive enough to measure EO at the new PEL level, but in this laboratory investigation only one type of monitoring badge was able to meet the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health criteria of +/- 25% overall system accuracy at the 95% confidence level in the exposure range of 0.5-2.0 X the OSHA PEL.  相似文献

The Ras protein and its homolog, Rap1A, have an identical "effector region" (residues 32-40) preceded by Asp30-Glu31 and Glu30-Lys31, respectively. In the complex of the "Ras-like" E30D/K31E mutant Rap1A with the Ras-binding domain (RBD), residues 51-131 of Raf-1, Glu31 in Rap1A forms a tight salt bridge with Lys84 in Raf-1. However, we have recently found that Raf-1 RBD binding of Ras is indeed reduced by the E31K mutation, but is not affected by the E31A mutation. Here, the "Rap1A-like" D30E/E31K mutant of Ras was prepared and shown to bind the Raf-1 RBD less strongly than wild-type Ras, but slightly more tightly than the E31K mutant. The backbone 1H, 13C, and 15N magnetic resonances of the Raf-1 RBD were assigned in complexes with the wild-type and D30E/E31K mutant Ras proteins in the guanosine 5'-O-(beta,gamma-imidotriphosphate)-bound form. The Lys84 residue in the Raf-1 RBD exhibited a large change in chemical shift upon binding wild-type Ras, suggesting that Lys84 interacts with wild-type Ras. The D30E/E31K mutant of Ras caused nearly the same perturbations in Raf-1 chemical shifts, including that of Lys84. We hypothesized that Glu31 in Ras may not be the major salt bridge partner of Lys84 in Raf-1. A molecular dynamics simulation of a model structure of the Raf-1 RBD.Ras.GTP complex suggested that Lys84 in Raf-1 might instead form a tight salt bridge with Asp33 in Ras. Consistent with this, the D33A mutation in Ras greatly reduced its Raf-I RBD binding activity. We conclude that the major salt bridge partner of Lys84 in Raf-1 may be Asp33 in Ras.  相似文献

The conformational and enthalpic changes that occur in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) glasses that have been vitrified from the melt under pressure have been examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and quantitative differential scanning calorimetry. It is shown that these pressures freeze in the high energy states that are characteristic of the vitrification temperature and increase the apparent glass transition temperature of the polymer. In addition, pressures in excess of the vitrification pressure, cause intermolecular effects that can be relaxed out below Tg. Both of these processes create characteristic endothermic and exothermic changes in the apparent heat capacity of the glass that appear over a period of time and are sensitive functions of the glass formation. processes as well as the subsequent annealing history. The endothermic events are interpreted as the stress perturbed volumetric relaxation process while the exotherms are associated with the release of the frozen in stresses.  相似文献

Off-state degradation in drain-extended NMOS transistors is studied. Carefully designed experiments and well-calibrated simulations show that hot carriers, which are generated by impact ionization of surface band-to-band tunneling current, are responsible for interface damage during off-state stress. Classical on-state hot carrier degradation has historically been associated with broken equivSi-H bonds at the interface. In contrast, the off-state degradation in drain-extended devices is shown to be due to broken equivSi-O- bonds. The resultant degradation is universal, which enables a long-term extrapolation of device degradation at operating bias conditions based on short-term stress data. Time evolution of degradation due to broken equivSi-O- bonds and the resultant universal behavior is explained by a bond-dispersion model. Finally, we show that, under off-state stress conditions, the interface damage that is measured by charge-pumping technique is correlated with dielectric breakdown time, as both of them are driven by broken equivSi-O- bonds.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: This report describes how the 1995 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) was designed, planned, and implemented. The NSFG is a national survey of women 15-44 years of age designed to provide national estimates of factors affecting pregnancy and birth rates and the health of women and infants. Planning for the 1995 NSFG began in 1990 at a formal conference with the survey's data users. Suggestions for substantial changes and improvements in the survey were made there and carried out by NSFG staff and the NSFG contractor--the Research Triangle Institute (RTI). METHODS: The survey was converted from paper and pencil interviewing to Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) to improve the quality, consistency, and timeliness of the data. At the same time, event histories of the respondent's work, education, family background, cohabitation, and sexual partners were added to lend explanatory power to the survey. These changes made the interview and the CAPI program long--average interview length was 103 minutes--and complex, but the CAPI program worked very well. RESULTS: About 260 female interviewers were trained for 7 days in January 1995. These interviewers completed a total of 10,847 interviews with women 15-44 years of age, for a response rate of 79 percent. This report describes how the survey was planned and designed and how the data were collected, edited, and processed for public use. This report may be of interest to NSFG data users and to those planning other computer-assisted surveys.  相似文献
