We describe an optically modulated scatterer as an electric-field probe for measuring radio-frequency and microwave fields. It has a high spatial resolution and the ability to operate very close to conducting and dielectric objects without appreciable distortion of the field to be measured. Thus, it can scan close to antennas and diffracting metal structures. We describe how the electric field is deduced from the measurements and present gain measurements and far-field patterns deduced from near-field scans of antennas. The results are tested by comparing them with those obtained by established measurement techniques  相似文献

A variety of different imaging techniques produce data which naturally lie in stratified spaces. These spaces consist of smooth regions of maximal dimension glued together along lower dimensional boundaries. Diffusion processes are important as they can be used to represent noise in statistical models on spaces for which standard parametric probability distributions do not exist. We consider particles undergoing Brownian motion in some low dimensional stratified spaces, and obtain analytic solutions to the heat equation specifying the distribution of particles. These solutions play the role of prototypical distributions for studying behaviour near singularities. While probabilistic reasoning can be used to solve the heat equation in some straightforward cases, more generally we construct solutions from eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. Specifically, we solve the heat equation on: open books; two-dimensional cones; the Petersen graph with unit edge length; and the cone of this graph which corresponds to a space of evolutionary trees.  相似文献

There is still an urgent requirement for more sensitive, cost-effective methods for detection and susceptibility testing of mycobacteria in clinical samples. We have been investigating a simple bacteriophage-based system which could be used for both purposes. As this depends upon the detection of phages which have successfully infected cells, a key step is the efficient removal or inactivation of phages remaining free in the culture medium. We demonstrate here the use of ferrous ammonium sulphate as an effective agent for the inactivation of mycobacteriophage D29 without impairing phage replication in previously infected host bacteria. Using this property, we report the detection of viable Mycobacterium smegmatis, M. bovis BCG and M. tuberculosis using simple low-cost technology. The method is highly sensitive, since it is able to detect 10 colony-forming units of M. smegmatis. It is also rapid, with the detection of M. tuberculosis in sputum specimens within 48 h.  相似文献

Water was frozen in a slot made in a transparent material, and the resulting stresses in the material produced by the expansion of the ice were measured by use of the photoelastic effect. Because the stresses changed with time, a photoelastic technique was developed which used photometric recording and digital processing in place of the more usual combination of photography and optical compensators. The maximum water pressure was 11 bar. A theory is presented which accounts, in outline, for the observed stresses, and we discuss its implications for freezing in real rocks. The physics of freezing water confined in a rock crack is different according to whether the ice does or does not begin to extrude. In our experiment there was some extrusion, and in this case the pressure can be calculated simply from the known yield strength of ice, the elasticity and strength of the rock not being directly involved.  相似文献

All of the 17 autistic children studied in the present paper showed disturbances of movement that with our methods could be detected clearly at the age of 4-6 months, and sometimes even at birth. We used the Eshkol-Wachman Movement Analysis System in combination with still-frame videodisc analysis to study videos obtained from parents of children who had been diagnosed as autistic by conventional methods, usually around 3 years old. The videos showed their behaviors when they were infants, long before they had been diagnosed as autistic. The movement disorders varied from child to child. Disturbances were revealed in the shape of the mouth and in some or all of the milestones of development, including, lying, righting, sitting, crawling, and walking. Our findings support the view that movement disturbances play an intrinsic part in the phenomenon of autism, that they are present at birth, and that they can be used to diagnose the presence of autism in the first few months of life. They indicate the need for the development of methods of therapy to be applied from the first few months of life in autism.  相似文献
