A general rate expression based on a proposed dual-path reaction model is developed for the oxidation of coal under mild conditions such as are useful in pretreatment for gasification. Dark energy presents us with a challenging puzzle: understanding the new physics seen in the acceleration of the expansion of the Universe. Measurements using type-Ia supernovae (SNe) first detected this acceleration, and this approach remains the most direct route to studying the details of the Universe's expansion history that can teach us more about the nature of the dark energy. Such measurements are, however, extremely demanding in both precision and accuracy, since the different dark-energy models predict very small differences in the expansion history. While several cosmological probes may reach the required statistical uncertainties, the key measurement limit will be the systematic uncertainty. The supernova-measurement approach has the advantage of well-studied systematic uncertainties, allowing a next-generation experiment to be pursued. We briefly review the progress to date and examine the promise of future surveys with large numbers of SNe and well-bounded systematics.  相似文献

Examined the effects of age, sex, and context of preschool classrooms on children's play. In Study 1, observed 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds playing in art, blocks, and replica play areas in their age-graded classrooms. Results suggested that children's play was related to Age?×?Play Area interactions. These relations were not independent of children's sex-related self-selection into the play areas or the number of participants in the areas. In Study 2, same-age, same-sex dyads played with blocks and replica props in experimental playrooms. Play was mediated by age, sex, and play area. Girls' play was less sophisticated than boys' play in the blocks area because it was an area in which males tended to play. Furthermore, the ecological validity of Study 2 was established vis-à-vis Study 1 results. In Study 3, same-age, mixed-sex dyads played in constructive and replica areas in experimental playrooms. No sex or Sex?×?Context effects were observed on play. Boys tended to dominate girls in both contexts. Results are explained in terms of Lewin's model of context. Complexes composed of peptide ligand for the serpin enzyme complex receptor covalently coupled to poly-L-lysine condensed by charge interaction with plasmid DNA direct gene transfer into receptor bearing cells. We compared intensity and duration of reporter gene expression in vitro and in vivo from serpin-enzyme receptor-directed gene transfer complexes prepared with poly-L-lysine of different chain lengths. When substituted with linker and ligand to comparable extents, DNA complexes containing short chain poly-L-lysine were larger and gave higher peak expression but significantly shorter duration of expression than those containing long chain poly-L-lysine. Both peak expression and duration of expression exceeded that observed with Lipofectin. Neither naked DNA nor DNA complexed with unsubstituted polylysine was effective in gene transfer. For in vivo experiments, complexes containing optimal ligand and degree of substitution (based on in vitro data, peptide C105Y, 11 ligands/plasmid DNA molecule) were prepared with either short chain or long chain polylysine and a beta-galactosidase expression plasmid. Following injection into the tail veins of mice, longer chain complexes gave significantly higher expression of reporter gene in lung and spleen that lasted for a significantly longer period of time than the shorter chain complexes. The short chain poly-L-lysine-DNA complexes were larger in diameter, as assessed by electron microscopy or atomic force microscopy, and gave less protection against DNase digestion in vitro than longer chain complexes. Thus, for gene transfer complexes directed at the serpin enzyme complex receptor, longer chain poly-L-lysine gave a much longer duration of expression both in vitro and in vivo. We speculate that this may be due to protection against degradation afforded the plasmid DNA by the tighter compaction produced by long chain poly-L-lysine.  相似文献

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurologic condition characterized by tremor, slowness, stiffness, and unstable posture. Degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra causes PD. Treatment with levodopa, a precursor of dopamine, initially ameliorates the clinical manifestations of PD. However, chronic levodopa treatment can produce severe involuntary movements (so-called dopa-induced dyskinesias or DID), limiting treatment. Pallidotomy, placement of a surgical lesion in the internal segment of the globus pallidus, reduces DID. Because this result is inconsistent with current theories of both basal ganglia function and DID, it prompted us to investigate the brain's response to levodopa. We measured regional cerebral blood flow response to levodopa with positron-emission tomography in 6 PD patients with DID, 10 chronically treated PD patients without DID, 17 dopa-na?ve PD patients, and 11 normals. The dose of levodopa was chosen to produce clinical benefit without inducing DID. This strategy allowed us to examine the brain response to levodopa across groups without the confounding effect of differences in motor behavior. We found that the DID group had a significantly greater response in ventrolateral thalamus than the other groups. This was associated with decreased activity in primary motor cortex. These findings are consistent with increased inhibitory output from the internal segment of the globus pallidus to thalamus after levodopa administration. They provide a physiological explanation for the clinical efficacy of pallidotomy and new insights into the physiology of the basal ganglia.  相似文献

PURPOSE: We evaluated the clinical use of long-term intravesical oxybutynin chloride in the treatment of neurogenic bladder dysfunction in children with myelodysplasia who could not tolerate oral anticholinergics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all patients recommended for intravesical oxybutynin chloride therapy. A total of 12 girls and 18 boys 1 to 17 years old was recruited for study. Oxybutynin chloride (5 mg.) was instilled 2 times daily and pretreatment cystograms were compared to followup urodynamic studies. Duration of therapy was 2 to 26 months (mean 13, median 12). RESULTS: Mean total capacity plus or minus standard deviation increased from 209 +/- 103 to 282 +/- 148 ml. (p < 0.01), mean safe capacity increased from 157 +/- 105 to 234 +/- 147 ml. (p < 0.01) and mean age adjusted safe capacity increased from 76 +/- 36 to 115 +/- 62%. Of the 29 patients who were incontinent 3 (10%) achieved continence and 19 (65%) reported a decreased use of sanitary pads. None of the patients had systemic side effects related to intravesical treatment. CONCLUSIONS: We believe that intravesical oxybutynin chloride is a viable treatment option for patients with myelodysplasia in whom oral therapy fails.  相似文献

The pathophysiology of dystonia is unclear, but several clues implicate striatal dopamine dysfunction. In contrast, the causal relationship between striatal dopamine deficiency and parkinsonism is well defined. We now suggest that parkinsonism or dystonia may occur following striatal dopamine deficiency. Baboons treated with intracarotid 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) developed transient hemidystonia prior to hemiparkinsonism. The day after MPTP treatment, most animals had spontaneous ipsilateral turning. Within a few days, all developed contralateral hemidystonia, with the arm and leg extended and externally rotated. This transient dystonia preceded hemiparkinsonism with flexed posture, bradykinesia, and postural tremor that persisted for up to 1.5 years. Dystonia corresponded temporally with a decreased striatal dopamine content and a transient decrease in D2-like receptor number. The time course of dystonia and parkinsonism is analogous to lower limb dystonia as the first, frequently transient, symptom of Parkinson's disease in humans. The association of striatal dopamine deficiency with dystonia and parkinsonism implies that other factors influence clinical manifestations.  相似文献

In this paper the effect of Ge substitution on the lattice parameter of Br sodalite has been studied. The sodalite was grown as a powder by the hydrothermal method. Lattice parameter measurements show a linear increase in ao with increasing amounts of Ge. The compositions of the powders were determined by the electron microprobe and spot checked by wet chemical analysis.  相似文献
