The paper briefly reviews the major forms of optical bistability in active optical devices compatible for use in gigabit optical communication systems, and reports an entirely new optical bistability for the first time. Unlike previous devices, the two bistable states of the optical device are each a series of picosecond optical pulses at 1 GHz or greater repetition rates, and are distinguished by a half period temporal shift between their temporal positions in relation to a clock pulse. The bistable device is based on a gain switched semiconductor laser. Theoretical studies suggest 100-ps switching speeds might be achieved, and experimental results are reported indicating optically triggered switching times of 500 ps.  相似文献

We present a hybrid representation for the attachment-mode current existing on the surface of a coaxially fed rectangular microstrip patch antenna. The hybrid representation consists of a one- or two-term residue and an eigenfunction series which gives the attachment-mode current at all points on the patch surface, including the probe-to-patch junction. It is numerically demonstrated that the residue and eigenfunction series blend smoothly in the close vicinity of the Stokes region which includes the probe-to-patch junction. The Stokes region is a very narrow region over which the attachment-mode current changes rapidly. The residue and eigenfunction series are used outside and within this Stokes region, respectively. This hybrid representation can be used in either spectral- or space-domain techniques for a full-wave solution to the microstrip antenna problem. The residue series is obtained by using an equivalent contour integral representation of the infinite eigenfunction series, which subsequently reduces to the Watson transform under the assumption of a slightly lossy substrate. At or near the Stokes regions the residue series is inadequate, as it cannot model the rapidly varying junction currents there. Examination of the residue series shows that the attachment mode is a superposition of exponentially attenuated, leaky, surface-traveling modes. During the last 10 years, several cases of myocardial infarction associated with anabolic steroid use have been reported. Postulated mechanisms to explain this association have included changes in lipid levels, the fibrinolytic system, and platelet aggregation. Clenbuterol is a beta 2-agonist with anabolic properties that has not been seen previously with myocardial infarction. We report a case of myocardial infarction in an otherwise healthy 26-year-old body-builder who recently used clenbuterol and anabolic steroids. In this case, synergistic effects of the two agents seem likely to have played a role in the infarct. The normal coronary arteriograms before any anticoagulant or thrombolytic therapy strongly suggest coronary spasm as the mechanism of the infarct.  相似文献

Ivermectin is not lethal to the adult worms of Onchocerca volvulus or to those of O. ochengi, a cattle parasite closely related to O. volvulus. Although ivermectin penetrates the nodules in which the adults of these nematodes live, it is not known what levels of the drug enter the worms. Adult male O. ochengi were incubated in [3H]ivermectin in a saturated solution of unlabelled ivermectin (11.44 microM), to measure uptake by the oral and transcuticular routes, and in [3H]inulin, to ascertain if oral ingestion occurs in vitro. Uptake of [3H]ivermectin was high [1040 disintegrations/min (d.p.m.) at 3 h, representing a mean total of 86 pmoles ivermectin/worm] and occurred predominantly by the transcuticular route. Viability of worms was not reduced by this exposure, and uptake continued for up to 12 h. Only low levels of [3H]inulin (four d.p.m.) were detected in worms, indicating that the gut is probably not functional in vitro. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the epicuticle of both sexes had an irregular surface which was pitted with a honeycomb structure in males, and rough and abundantly folded in females. These structures greatly increased the absorptive surface of the worms. In conclusion, ivermectin is able to enter adult O. ochengi males at concentrations sufficient to kill non-filarial nematodes.  相似文献

Synthetic organic colorants, the majority of which are recalcitrant in nature, are used universally in many different manufacturing processes. The dyes are released into the environment in industrial effluents and are highly visible even at low concentrations (<1 mg∕L). Added to this, certain dyes, dye precursors, and aromatic amines have been shown to be carcinogenic. Thus, appropriate treatment of dye wastewaters to remove color and the dye compounds is clearly an important issue. Methanogenic toxicity tests on several food dyes provided a range of toxicity results, from noninhibitory (IC50 >20 g∕L) to inhibitory (IC50 0.2 mg∕L). Batch biodegradability assays indicated that the dyes were not readily utilized by the anaerobic microorganisms as a sole substrate. Decolorization of the dye tartrazine was investigated in a laboratory-scale anaerobic baffled reactor at a concentration of 250 mg∕L. Reduction in COD of 50–60% and color reduction of about 95% was achieved. Initially the tartrazine was not readily decolorized; however, decolorization improved with acclimation of the biomass. An industrial wastewater from a food dye manufacturer was fed to a second laboratory-scale anaerobic baffled reactor at a concentration of 5% (volume-to-volume ratio) and then increased to 10% (volume-to-volume ratio). Anaerobic degradation of the wastewater was efficient. Methanogenic activity was high; the organic content of the influent was reduced by about 70%, and color was reduced by almost 90%  相似文献

Hydrophilic interaction ultra performance liquid chromatography (HILIC-UPLC) permits the analysis of highly polar metabolites, providing complementary information to reversed-phase (RP) chromatography. HILIC-UPLC-TOF-MS was investigated for the global metabolic profiling of rat urine samples generated in an experimental hepatotoxicity study of galactosamine (galN) and the concomitant investigation of the protective effect of glycine. Within-run repeatability and stability over a large sample batch (>200 samples, 60 h run-time) was assessed through the repeat analysis of a quality control sample. Following system equilibration, excellent repeatability was observed in terms of retention time (CV < 1.7%), signal intensity (CV < 14%), and mass variability (<0.005 amu), providing a good measure of reproducibility. Classification of urinary metabolic profiles according to treatment was observed, with significant changes in specific metabolites after galN exposure, including increased urocanic acid, N-acetylglucosamine, and decreased 2-oxoglutarate. A novel finding from this HILIC-UPLC-MS approach was elevated urinary tyramine in galN-treated rats, reflecting disturbed amino acid metabolism. These results show HILIC-UPLC-MS to be a promising method for global metabolic profiling, demonstrating high within-run repeatability, even over an extended run time. Retention of polar endogenous analytes and xenobiotic metabolites was improved compared with RP studies, including galN, N-acetylglucosamine, oxoglutarate, and urocanic acid, enhancing metabolome coverage and potentially improving biomarker discovery.  相似文献

In this paper, we have developed a relatively simple algorithm to calculate the large-signal dynamic response of DFB lasers by solving the time-dependent coupled wave equations directly in the time domain. The spontaneous emission noise, longitudinal variations of carrier (hole burning) and photon densities as well as that of the refractive index are taken into consideration. To demonstrate the power of this straightforward algorithm, the model shows how the side-mode suppression ratio in devices with high κL and a λ/4: phase shift is significantly affected by the radiation in the second-order DFB laser. The design and fabrication of a prototype video fire detection system, which can locate a fire and determine its heat release rate, is described. The operation of the prototype system is demonstrated in a series of small-scale tests. The system utilizes a video camera to monitor an array of passive sensors distributed around the compartment to be protected. Each of the sensors is made up of a temperature-sensitive sheet that changes color at a prescribed temperature. In the event of an accidental fire, the plume of hot combustion gases rising from the fire will cause the temperature-sensitive sensors to be activated and change color. The times and locations of sensors changing color are used as data for an inverse problem solution algorithm, which determines the location and the heat release rate of the fire. A small-scale evaluation of the prototype video system is presented in which the prototype system is used to detect, locate and determine the heat release rate of a 2·4 kW burner placed in a 2·75 m wide by 2·75 m deep by 1·5 m high test enclosure. The accuracy of the prototype system in locating and determining the heat release rate of the small flame source placed in the reduced-scale enclosure is reported. In addition, the ability of the prototype system to make approximate measurements of the optical thickness of smoke in the enclosure, along camera-sensor lines-of-sight and then to use these measurements to locate and track the growth of a smoke plume is demonstrated.  相似文献

A new analytical strategy for biomarker recovery from directly coupled ultra-performance liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC Tof MS) data on biofluids is presented and exemplified using a study on hydrazine-induced liver toxicity. A key step in the strategy involves a novel procedure for reducing the spectroscopic search space by differential analysis of cohorts of normal and pathological samples using an orthogonal projection to latent structures discriminant analysis (O-PLS-DA). This efficiently sorts principal discriminators of toxicity from the background of thousands of metabolic features commonly observed in data sets generated by UPLC-MS analysis of biological fluids and is thus a powerful tool for biomarker discovery.  相似文献
