Mechanical stimulation, as provided by physiotherapy or controlled motion is essentially the only factor able to improve anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) healing. We investigate the cellular effects of such stimulus. Two types of stimulations are applied on canine ACL fibroblasts: repetitive stretch of an elastomeric adhesion substrate and a laminar flow of culture media over the culture surface. Cell orientation, proliferation rate, synthesis and type of collagen as well as proteoglycans (PG) synthesis and hydrodynamic characteristics have been studied. According to our results, the fibroblasts tend to align perpendicularly to the deformation axis of their substrate, and along a laminar flow. The shear stress induced by the laminar flow does not modify significantly proliferation rate nor extracellular matrix synthesis. Substrate stretching however, increases proliferation rate, collagen synthesis, mostly type III, and PG synthesis, principally of small sizes. The characteristics of fibroblasts submitted to repeated deformation match those of fibroblasts from ligament scar tissues. Their orientation perpendicular to substratum deformation differs from the one usually encountered in the undamaged tissue: aligned on the ligament axis.  相似文献

Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) hyperspectral data is used to investigate the effects of topography on the selection of spectral end members, and to assess whether the topographic correction improves the discrimination of rock units for lithologic mapping. A publicly available Digital Elevation Model (DEM), at a scale of 1:50,000, is used to model the radiance variation of the scene as a function of topography, assuming a Lambertian surface. Skylight is estimated and removed from the airborne data using a dark object correction. The CASI data is corrected on a pixel-by-pixel basis to normalize the scene to a uniform solar illumination and viewing geometry. The results show that topography has the effect of expanding end member clusters at times resulting in the overlap of clusters and that the correction process can effectively reduce the variation in detected radiance due to changes in local illumination. When topographic effects are embedded in the hyperspectral data, methods typically used for the selection of end members, such as the convex hull method, can miss end members or result in the selection of nonrepresentative pixels as end members. Thus, end members selected by some conventional methods are very likely “incomplete” or “nonrepresentative” if the topographic effect is embedded in the data. As shown in this study, the topographic correction can reveal hidden end members and achieve a better representation of end members via the statistical center of isolated clusters.  相似文献

This paper presents research results on the causes of a severe concrete deterioration, which occurred in many building foundations approximately 2 years after construction. Concrete samples were investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a petrographic examination performed with a stereomicroscope. It was found that the early cracking of concrete stemmed from the oxidation of the pyrrhotite found in the anorthosite aggregates used to produce the concrete. The oxidation process led to the precipitation of iron hydroxides having a higher volume than the original pyrrhotite does. The presence of micas (biotite) close to the pyrrhotite seemed to promote and accelerate the oxidation process.  相似文献

Outsourced information systems development (OISD) projects are challenging endeavors, and the literature suggests differences between the parties involved as critical hinderers of such projects. Using institutional theory as a foundational theory, we propose a process explanation of the effects of differences between parties in OISD projects. Our explanation relies on the interaction of four components: (1) the IS development and project management institutional profiles of the parties involved; (2) the institutional distance between practices within these profiles; (3) instances of conflicting institutional demands when institutional distance becomes salient; and (4) the repertoire of institutional strategic responses available to parties to address those instances. We suggest that the constitutive elements of institutional distance and the degree to which parties envision their collaboration beyond the project at hand contribute to explaining the enactment of strategic responses. Accounting for the fact that practices, as well as the institutional logics that drive their enactment, may differ between parties, we make a theoretical contribution to the literature on OISD by building a fine-grained explanation of the effects of differences between parties in OISD projects.  相似文献

This study assesses the potential of ground reactive aggregates to reduce or suppress expansion associated with ASR. Particular attention is paid to fine admixtures (<80 μm) added to mortars, which contain the reactive aggregates from which the fines were ground. Many varieties of aggregate (quarried and natural, igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks) from different geological settings were subjected to an autoclave test. The replacement of 10–20% of the sand by reactive aggregate powder (RAP) of different surface areas from 11 different reactive aggregates led to the reduction of ASR-expansion by up to 78% compared with control mortars. Increasing the amount of fines led to better performance. No clear relationship was observed between the reactivity degree of the aggregates and the efficiency of their ground powder to reduce expansion. A general trend was found regarding the fineness of ground aggregates: finer particles were more effective in reducing expansion. The reduction of the expansion due to RAP is discussed in terms of parameters affecting its efficiency and of the mechanisms responsible for the reduction.  相似文献

Shape is an important consideration in green building design due to its significant impact on energy performance and construction costs. This paper presents a methodology to optimize building shapes in plan using the genetic algorithm. The building footprint is represented by a multi-sided polygon. Different geometrical representations for a polygon are considered and evaluated in terms of their potential problems such as epistasis, which occurs when one gene pair masks or modifies the expression of other gene pairs, and encoding isomorphism, which occurs when chromosomes with different binary strings map to the same solution in the design space. Two alternative representations are compared in terms of their impact on computational effectiveness and efficiency. An optimization model is established considering the shape-related variables and several other envelope-related design variables such as window ratios and overhangs. Life-cycle cost and life-cycle environmental impact are the two objective functions used to evaluate the performance of a green building design. A case study is presented where the shape of a typical floor of an office building defined by a pentagon is optimized with a multi-objective genetic algorithm.  相似文献

Potassium content in male and female workers at the US Department of Energy Hanford Site was estimated based on measurements made in 2002 of 40K activity in the body. The 40K activity in females ranged from 2.1 to 4.1 kBq with an average of 3.1 +/- 0.02 kBq. The total body potassium (TBK) content in females averaged 98 +/- 0.6 g. The 40K activity in males ranged from 2.8 to 6.6 kBq with an average of 4.2 +/- 0.01 kBq and the average TBK was 136 +/- 0.3 g. The average TBK value for males aged 20-49 y was 140 g. The average TBK values for both genders decreased with age. The average potassium concentrations calculated for the different age ranges for males were 15-25% less than the value (1.9 gK per kg) obtained using the reported ICRP reference potassium and reference weight values. Potassium concentrations were inversely correlated with body-build index, body-mass index and body weight. These correlations could possibly be utilised to help assess the risk for disease. Future work is planned to evaluate whether monitoring of potassium concentrations could be used as a tool for the detection of diabetes and hypertension.  相似文献
