Knobe (2003) wants to help adjudicate the philosophical debate concerning whether and under what conditions we normally judge that some side effect was brought about intentionally. His proposal for doing so is perhaps an obvious one--simply elicit the intuitions of "The Folk" directly on the matter and record the results. Knobe concludes that people's judgment that a side effect was brought about intentionally apparently rests, at least in part, upon how blameworthy they find the agent responsible for it. Knobe's appreciably straightforward approach to this question does not settle the matter, however. Simply raising that question can itself affect our evaluation of the side effect in question as either something good or something bad. As a result, Knobe's experiments effectively bias subjects' responses toward judging the given side effects more negatively than they might have otherwise. Subjects failed to assign a high level of praise for good side effects because taking into account whether they were brought about intentionally or unintentionally makes them suspect. The world is on the verge of a major antibiotic crisis as the emergence of resistant bacteria is increasing, and very few novel molecules have been discovered since the 1960s. In this context, scientists have been exploring alternatives to conventional antibiotics, such as ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs). Interestingly, the highly potent in vitro antibacterial activity and safety of ruminococcin C1, a recently discovered RiPP belonging to the sactipeptide subclass, has been demonstrated. The present results show that ruminococcin C1 is efficient at curing infection and at protecting challenged mice from Clostridium perfringens with a lower dose than the conventional antibiotic vancomycin. Moreover, antimicrobial peptide (AMP) is also effective against this pathogen in the complex microbial community of the gut environment, with a selective impact on a few bacterial genera, while maintaining a global homeostasis of the microbiome. In addition, ruminococcin C1 exhibits other biological activities that could be beneficial for human health, as well as other fields of applications. Overall, this study, by using an in vivo infection approach, confirms the antimicrobial clinical potential and highlights the multiple functional properties of ruminococcin C1, thus extending its therapeutic interest.  相似文献

Many problems require the computation of a high dimensional integral, typically with a few tens of input factors, with a low number of integrand evaluations. To avoid the curse of dimensionality, we reduce the dimension before applying the Quasi-Monte Carlo method. We will show how to reduce the dimension by computing approximate Sobol indices of the variables with a two-levels fractional factorial design. Then, we will use the Sobol indices to define the effective discrepancy, which turns out to be correlated with the QMC error and thus enables one to choose a good sequence for the integral estimation.  相似文献

The quality of the image produced by an outdoor optical system is affected by the presence of atmospheric aerosols between object and receiver. The properties of the point-spread function that result from aerosol particles were calculated by a new Monte Carlo code called MEDIA (an acronym for Modélisation des Effets de Diffusion Inhérents à l'Atmosphère). The influence of the scattering phase function's angular dependence on the irradiance of the focal plane of a detector was studied. Calculations were performed by use of Mie theory and of the Henyey-Greenstein formulation for the same asymmetry parameter and various detector optical characteristics and atmospheric conditions. Major variations were observed for strong forward-peaked scattering phase functions and a large detector field of view.  相似文献

In order to mitigate the multipath propagation problems for high rate wlans such as Hiperlan (5 GHz) [2], we study an approach based on electronic beam steering over 360° in azimuth with the help of circular arrays of monopoles [3]. Design simplicity and size constraints intended for potential low-cost applications on the terminals has led us to favor a beam switching topology, using a single feeding-port [4]. Two competing configurations of the microstrip feeding circuit are presented and their principle of operation is experimentally validated through passive circuit configurations. The power distribution is achieved in the first one with the help of a pseudo-divider based on a modified 7-branch star junction, whose specific advantage is its very small size. Unfortunately, this design does not preserve the circular permutation invariance of the radiation patterns. The second circuit bypasses this problem in achieving a power distribution through a virtual point junction, at the cost of an appreciable increase in the circuit size.  相似文献

Frequency-Selective Predistortion Linearization of RF Power Amplifiers   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper presents a frequency-selective RF vector predistortion linearization system for RF multicarrier power amplifiers (PAs) affected by strong differential memory effects. Differential memory effects can be revealed in two-tone experiment by the divergence for increasing tone-spacing of the vector Volterra coefficients associated with the lower and upper intermodulations tones. Using large-signal vector measurement with a large-signal network analyzer, a class-AB LDMOS RF PA is demonstrated to exhibit a strong differential memory effect for modulation bandwidth above 0.3 MHz. New frequency-selective RF and baseband predistortion linearization algorithms are proposed to separately address the linearization requirements of the interband and inband intermodulation products of both the lower and upper sidebands. Theoretical verification of the algorithms are demonstrated with Matlab simulations using a Volterra/Wiener PA model with memory effects. The baseband linearization algorithm is next implemented in a field-programmable gate array and experimentally investigated for the linearization of the class-AB LDMOS PA for two carrier wideband code-division multiple-access signals. The ability of the algorithm to selectively linearize the two interband and four inband intermodulation products is demonstrated. Adjacent channel leakage ratio of up to 45 dBc for inband and interband are demonstrated experimentally at twice the typical fractional bandwidth.  相似文献

Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) are becoming an increasingly important part of the wireless communication system. In such a communication system various electronic devices carried by a person on his body can be connected. In this paper, we investigate the UWB body area propagation channel. The channel characterization is based on UWB on-body channel measurements. A new approach for the electro-thermal modeling of LDMOSFETs for power-amplifier design that bypasses pulsed-IVs and pulsed-RF measurements is presented in this paper. The existence of low-frequency dispersion in LDMOSFETs is demonstrated by comparing pulsed IVs with iso-thermal IVs. The modeling technique uses iso-thermal IV and microwave measurements to obtain the temperature dependence of small-signal parameters. Optimized tensor-product B-splines, which distribute knots to minimize fitting errors, are used to represent the small-signal parameters and extract the large-signal model as a function of voltages and temperature. The model is implemented on ADS and is verified by simulating and measuring the power harmonics and IMD large-signal performance of a power amplifier. The impact on the model of temperature-dependent drain and gate charge is investigated. The presented model is found to compare well and, in some cases, exceed the existing MET model for LDMOSFETs  相似文献

Chlamydia pneumoniae was eradicated from the nasopharynges of 26 of 33 (78.8%) evaluable children and adults with community-acquired pneumonia who were treated with azithromycin. We tested 55 isolates of C. pneumoniae obtained from 46 of these patients against azithromycin. The MIC at which 90% of the isolates were inhibited and the minimal chlamydiacidal concentration at which 90% of strains tested were killed of azithromycin for these isolates were both 0.5 microg/ml. Seven patients remained culture positive after treatment. The MICs of azithromycin for isolates from two patients increased fourfold after therapy. However, all the patients with persistent infection improved clinically. Further studies of treatment of C. pneumoniae infection, utilizing culture, are needed both to assess efficacy and to monitor for the possible development of antibiotic resistance.  相似文献
