The core of the electric cable is a heterogeneous medium; the conducting wires are periodically distributed and the period is small compared with the diameter of the core. Moreover, the insulating medium is not perfectly thermally insulating but its thermic conductivity is small. Each monomer of the trimeric outer membrane porin PhoE of Escherichia coli
consists of a 16-stranded beta-barrel with short turns at the periplasmic
side and large loops at the cell surface. One of these loops, L3, is folded
inside the beta-barrel and forms a constriction within the channel.
Therefore, it is assumed to play an important role in the permeability
properties of this general diffusion pore. Several site-directed mutations
were introduced in loop L3 to investigate its function. The loop L3
contains a short alpha-helix and, at the tip of the loop, a highly
conserved PEFGG sequence. The alpha-helix was deleted and the two glycines
in the PEFGG sequence were either replaced by alanines or deleted. A serine
residue, supposed to play an indirect role in the anion selectivity of the
pore, was removed. The mutant porins were analysed both in vitro and in
vivo. The results suggest that flexibility of the third loop is important
for solute passage and that this flexibility is determined by the two
glycine residues in the PEFGG sequence. Furthermore, the alpha-helix is
probably important for the folding of the protein. The supposed involvement
of Ser115 (Ser121A in OmpF nomenclature) in anion selectivity was
confirmed.

Dagstuhl seminar no. 10102 on discrete event logistic systems recognized a network of persistent models to be a “Grand Challenge.” Such on-line model network will offer an infrastructure that facilitates the management of logistic operations. This ambition to create a network of persistent models implies a radical shift for model design activities as the objective is an infrastructure rather than application-specific solutions. In particular, model developers can no longer assume that they know what their model will be used for. It is no longer possible to design for the expected.This paper presents insights in model development and design in the absence of precise knowledge concerning a model's usage. Basically, model developers may solely rely on the presence of the real-world counterpart mirrored by their model and a general idea about the nature of the application (e.g. coordination of logistic operations). When the invariants of their real-world counterpart suffice for models to be valid, these models become reusable and integrate-able. As these models remain valid under a wide range of situations, they become multi-purpose and durable resources rather than single-purpose short-lived components or legacy, which is even worse.Moreover and more specifically, the paper describes how to build models that allow their users to generate predictions in unexpected situations and atypical conditions. Referring to previous work, the paper concisely discusses how these predictions can be generated starting from the models. We compare the recently proposed Discriminative Restricted Boltzmann Machine (DRBM) to the classical Support Vector Machine (SVM) on a challenging classification task consisting in identifying weapon classes from audio signals. The three weapon classes considered in this work (mortar, rocket, and rocket‐propelled grenade), are difficult to reliably classify with standard techniques because they tend to have similar acoustic signatures. In addition, specificities of the data available in this study make it challenging to rigorously compare classifiers, and we address methodological issues arising from this situation. Experiments show good classification accuracy that could make these techniques suitable for fielding on autonomous devices. DRBMs appear to yield better accuracy than SVMs, and are less sensitive to the choice of signal preprocessing and model hyperparameters. This last property is especially appealing in such a task where the lack of data makes model validation difficult. 相似文献

Power-to-Substitute Natural Gas processes are investigated to offer solutions for renewable energy storing or transportation. In the present study, an original Power-to-SNG process combining high-temperature steam electrolysis and CO2 methanation is implemented and simulated. A reference process is firstly defined, including a specific modelling approach of the electrolysis and a methanation modelling including a kinetic law. The process also integrates a unit to clean the gas from residual CO2, H2 and H2O for gas network injection. Having set all the units, simulations are performed with ProsimPlus 3™ software for a reference case where the electrolyser and the methanation reactors are designed. The reference case allows to produce 67.5 Nm3/h of SNG with an electrical energy consumption of 14.4 kW h/Nm3. The produced SNG satisfies specifications required for network injection. From this reference process, two sensitivity analyses on electrolysis and methanation working points and on external parameters and constraints are considered. As a main result, we observe that the reference case maximises both process efficiency and SNG production when compared with other studied cases. 相似文献

Conditions for the elaboration of nanostructured varistors by spark plasma sintering (SPS) are investigated, using 8‐nm zinc oxide nanoparticles synthesized following an organometallic approach. A binary system constituted of zinc oxide and bismuth oxide nanoparticles is used for this purpose. It is synthesized at room temperature in an organic solution through the hydrolysis of dicyclohexylzinc and bismuth acetate precursors. Sintering of this material is performed by SPS at various temperatures and dwell times. The determination of the microstructure and the chemical composition of the as‐prepared ceramics are based on scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction analysis. The nonlinear electrical characteristics are evidenced by current–voltage measurements. The breakdown voltage of these nanostructured varistors strongly depends on grain sizes. The results show that nanostructured varistors are obtained by SPS at sintering temperatures ranging from 550 to 600 °C. 相似文献

Anodic dissolution takes place only at the inner disc when the electrode is polarised in the overhang of the polarisation curve which is Z shaped. This paper describes the development of practical Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) methods for the determination of acid number (AN) and base number (BN) in lubricants through the combined use of signal transduction via stoichiometric reactions and differential spectroscopy to circumvent matrix effects. Trifluoroacetic acid and potassium phthalimide were used as stoichiometric reactants to provide infrared (IR) signals proportional to the basic and acidic constituents present in oils. Samples were initially diluted with 1-propanol, then split, with one half treated with the stoichiometric reactant and the other half with a blank reagent, their spectra collected, and a differential spectrum obtained to ratio out the invariant spectral contributions from the sample. Quantitation for AN and BN was based on measurement of the peak height of the v(C = O) or v(COO) absorptions, respectively, of the products of the corresponding stoichiometric reactions, yielding a standard error of calibration of < 0.1 mg KOH/g oil. The AN/BN FT-IR methods were validated by the analysis of a wide range of new and used oils supplied by third parties, which had been analyzed by ASTM methods. Good correlations were obtained between the chemical and FT-IR methods, indicating that the measures are on the whole comparable. From a practical perspective, these new FT-IR methods have significant advantages over ASTM titrimetric methods in terms of environmental considerations, sample size, and speed of analysis, as well as the variety of oil types that can be handled. FT-IR analysis combining stoichiometric signal transduction with differential spectroscopy may be of wider utility as an alternative to titration in the determination of acid or basic constituents in complex nonaqueous systems. 相似文献

Since eutomer and distomer show different biological effects, access to pure enantiomers is essential. Preferential enrichment is a relatively new process of chiral resolution developed in the 90s. Extension of its scope was attempted with tryptophan ethyl ester hydrochloride. This salt meets one of the most important requirements for preferential enrichment, namely, a larger solubility for the pure enantiomers with reference to the racemic compound. But, due to the absence of a solid solution, this salt cannot perform preferential enrichment. This impossibility was endorsed by semi‐empirical molecular modeling. 相似文献
