Modern cellular mobile communications systems are characterized by a high degree of capacity. Consequently, they have to serve the maximum possible number of calls while the number of channels per cell is limited. The objective of channel allocation is to assign a required number of channels to each cell such that both efficient frequency spectrum utilization is provided and interference effects are minimized. Channel assignment is therefore an important operation of resource management and its efficient implementation increases the fidelity, capacity, and quality of service of cellular systems. Most channel allocation strategies are based on deterministic methods, however, which result in implementation complexity that is prohibitive for the traffic demand envisaged for the next generation of mobile systems. An efficient heuristic technique capable of handling channel allocation problems is introduced as an alternative. The method is called a combinatorial evolution strategy (CES) and belongs to the general heuristic optimization techniques known as evolutionary algorithms (EAs). Three alternative allocation schemes operating deterministically, namely the dynamic channel assignment (DCA), the hybrid channel assignment (HCA), and the borrowing channel assignment (BCA), are formulated as combinatorial optimization problems for which CES is applicable. Simulations for representative cellular models show the ability of this heuristic to yield sufficient solutions. These results will encourage the use of this method for the development of a heuristic channel allocation controller capable of coping with the traffic and spectrum management demands for the proper operation of the next generation of cellular systems  相似文献

Swarm intelligence is a new challenging branch of artificial life which takes advantage of the collective behaviour of animals with limited intellectual faculties (insects, flocking birds, schools of fish) to solve algorithmically complex problems. Recently a new routing method based on the way that ants are communicating with each other has been applied to solve routing problems in telecommunication networks. This paper examines the behavior of an ant based decentralised router using an adequate set of commonly acceptable and some newly introduced metrics.  相似文献

Using the idea of probabilistic routing, calls in an ant based decentralized scheme are not routed according to the largest probabilities in the pheromone tables but randomly according to these probabilities. This principle can be particularly helpful in order to further minimize possible node congestion problems. An additional incorporation of the antipheromone mechanism in the operation of artificial ants helps in better biasing the network. This paper examines the behaviour of such a routing scheme using a proper set of suitable metrics. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The demand for more efficient and fast channel allocation techniques in cellular systems increases day by day. Borrowing channel assignment (BCA) was introduced in the literature as a compromise between the classic fixed and dynamic channel allocation schemes. This paper examines the behavior of three heuristic BCA techniques based alternatively on a Hopfield neural network, an efficient evolutionary algorithm named combinatorial evolution strategy (CES) and a third heuristic which combines the basic advantages of the two above computational intelligence methods. By considering some specific assumptions that follows an ideal cellular mobile model, BCA is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem. The above heuristics have been extensively applied to solve efficiently such problems in the past. Simulation results, derived for uniform and nonuniform traffic load conditions, are used to compare these BCA schemes each other as also with other well-established allocation techniques.  相似文献

We consider a free-space optical (FSO) channel model affected by misalignment fading (pointing error) effects. Assuming intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) with on-off keying (OOK), new closed form expressions for the bit-error rate (BER) and the outage probability are presented. Furthermore, four optimization models are formulated and solved taking into account various metrics such as the beamwidth, the electrical signal-to-noise ratio, the normalized jitter, the BER, and the outage probability. The results obtained can be a useful outcome for FSO system designers in order to limit pointing error effects and achieve, thus, an optimum performance.  相似文献

We present an analytical framework for the performance evaluation of laser satellite uplinks over the major probabilistic impairments, i.e., atmospheric turbulence and beam wander. Specifically, we consider a ground-station-to-space laser uplink with a Gaussian beam wave model, and we focus on the particular regime assuming untracked beams where beam wandering takes place. In that regime, the modulated gamma-gamma distribution has been proposed as an effective irradiance model to characterize the combined effect of turbulence and beam wander. First we provide a closed-form expression of the probability density function and deduce the fundamental statistics of the new model. Then we evaluate the performance of the laser system assuming coherent detection for several modulation schemes. An appropriate set of numerical results is presented to verify the accuracy of the derived expressions.  相似文献

In this letter, we investigate the error rate performance of free-space optical (FSO) links over strong turbulence fading channels together with misalignment (pointing error) effects. First, we present a novel closed-form expression for the distribution of a stochastic FSO channel model which takes into account both atmospheric turbulence-induced fading and misalignment-induced fading. Then, we evaluate the average bit-error rate in closed form of a FSO system operating in this channel environment, assuming intensity modulation/direct detection with on-off keying. Numerical examples are further provided to collaborate on the derived analytical expressions.  相似文献

Dynamic channel assignment (DCA) has been discussed in the literature as a way to achieve improved resource management in cellular networks. In the simplest dynamic allocation scheme, all channels are kept in a central pool and are used on a call-by-call basis. DCA is therefore a complex real time operation and various heuristic methods have been devised as mechanisms to give a fast and reliable solution to this problem. This paper examines the implementation of a DCA model using two approaches from the field of evolutionary computation. The first is the so called genetic algorithm (GA) and the second is the combinatorial evolution strategy (CES). Computer simulations evaluate and compare these proposed heuristic DCA schemes concerning their application to a cellular model for both uniform and non-uniform traffic load conditions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
