In this letter, we evaluate the effectiveness of a multi-stage contention scheme for wireless local area networks (WLANs) medium access control (MAC). Multi-stage contention schemes basically divide the stations into smaller groups to resolve the contention more efficiently. Previous researchers have proposed virtual grouping schemes for WLANs MAC. Here we quantitatively analyze what can be achieved with a simple grouping scheme, i.e. through multi-stage contention. Our analysis shows that the multi-stage scheme is efficient in resolving contention, making it a good alternative to the commonly used exponential backoff mechanism.  相似文献

We studied the effects of ZnO nanoparticles [ZnO NPs, primary particle size 35 ± 10 nm (circular diameter, TEM)], bulk [160 ± 81 nm (circular diameter, TEM)], and Zn ions (from ZnCl(2)) on mortality, growth, and reproductive endpoints in the sediment dwelling marine amphipod Corophium volutator over a complete lifecycle (100 days). ZnO NPs were characterized by size, aggregation, morphology, dissolution, and surface properties. ZnO NPs underwent aggregation and partial dissolution in the seawater exposure medium, resulting in a size distribution that ranged in size from discrete nanoparticles to the largest aggregate of several micrometers. Exposure via water to all forms of zinc in the range of 0.2-1.0 mg L(-1) delayed growth and affected the reproductive outcome of the exposed populations. STEM-EDX analysis was used to characterize insoluble zinc precipitates (sphaerites) of high sulfur content, which accumulated in the hepatopancreas following exposures. The elemental composition of the sphaerites did not differ for ZnO NP, Zn(2+), and bulk ZnO exposed organisms. These results provide an illustration of the comparable toxicity of Zn in bulk, soluble, and nanoscale forms on critical lifecycle parameters in a sediment dwelling organism.  相似文献

In recent years, the physical layer data rate provided by 802.11 Wireless LANs has dramatically increased thanks to significant advances in the modulation and coding techniques employed. However, previous studies show that the 802.11 MAC operation, namely the distributed coordination function (DCF), represents a limiting factor: the throughput efficiency drops as the channel bit rate increases, and a throughput upper limit does indeed exist when the channel bit rate goes to infinite high. These findings indicate that the performance of the DCF protocol will not be efficiently improved by merely increasing the channel bit rate. This paper shows that the DCF performance may significantly benefit from the adoption of two separate physical carriers: one devised to manage the channel access contention, and another devised to deliver information data. We propose a scheme, referred to as out-of-band signaling (OBS), designed to reuse (and remain backward compatible with) the existing 802.11 medium access control (MAC) specification. Performance evaluation of OBS is carried out through analytical techniques validated via extensive simulation, for both saturation and statistical traffic conditions. Numerical results show that OBS improves the throughput/delay performance, and provides better bandwidth usage compared with the in-band signaling technique employed by DCF.  相似文献

A new kind of potentiometric chip sensor for ion-selective electrodes (ISE) based on a solvent polymeric membrane is described. The chip sensor is designed to trap the organic cocktail inside the chip and to permit sample solution to flow past the membrane. The design allows the sensor to overcome technical problems of ruggedness and would therefore be ideal for industrial processes. The sensor performance for a Ba2+-ISE membrane based on a Vogtle ionophore showed electrochemical behavior similar to that observed in conventional electrodes and microelectrode arrangements.  相似文献

The NEMO basic support protocol enhances mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) to enable mobile router (MR) to move together with mobile network node (MNN) as a unit. This protocol suffers from pinball routing effect which has triggered research works to enable direct routing between MNNs in the presence of network mobility. Instead of relying on MIPv6, this paper describes network mobility using a novel terminal-assisted IP mobility protocol on MNNs that work cooperatively with MRs and access routers to provide seamless connectivity. This protocol is superior as it neither suffers from pinball routing effect nor requires dedicated infrastructure support such as home agent. It also eliminates the need to dynamically increase the size of IP header in IP tunneling. Through quantitative comparisons with existing protocol, we show that this protocol performs better than existing protocols in terms of average packet delivery overhead and packet generation.  相似文献

We describe a practical method of fabricating surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates based on dip-coating poly-l-lysine derivatized microscope slides in a gold colloidal suspension. The use of only commercially available starting materials in this preparation is particularly advantageous, aimed at both reducing time and the inconsistency associated with surface modification of substrates. The success of colloid deposition has been demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the corresponding SERS response (giving performance comparable to the corresponding traditional colloidal SERS substrates). Reproducibility was evaluated by conducting replicate measurements across six different locations on the substrate and assessing the extent of the variability (standard deviation values of spectral parameters: peak width and height), in response to either Rhodamine 6G or Isoniazid. Of particular interest is the observation of how some peaks in a given spectrum are more susceptible to data variability than others. For example, in a Rhodamine 6G SERS spectrum, spectral parameters of the peak at 775 cm(-1) were shown to have a relative standard deviation (RSD) % of <10%, while the peak at 1573 cm(-1) has a RSD of >/=10%. This observation is best explained by taking into account spectral variations that arise from the effect of a chemisorption process and the local nature of chemical enhancement mechanisms, which affects the enhancement of some spectral peaks but not others (analogous to resonant Raman phenomenon).  相似文献

This letter presents an accurate model for the performance analysis of the IEEE 802.11 saturation throughput with freezing of the backoff counter. The model corrects the existing model presented by Ziouva and Antonakopoulos which assumes that the channel access probability and station collision probability are independent of channel status. We propose in this paper an optimized, polymorphic, hybrid multicast routing protocol for MANET. This new polymorphic protocol attempts to benefit from the high efficiency of proactive behavior (in terms of quicker response to transmission requests) and the limited network traffic overhead of the reactive behavior, while being power, mobility, and vicinity-density (in terms of number of neighbor nodes per specified area around a mobile node) aware. The proposed protocol is based on the principle of adaptability and multibehavioral modes of operations. It is able to change behavior in different situations in order to improve certain metrics like maximizing battery life, reducing communication delays, improving deliverability, etc. The protocol is augmented by an optimization scheme, adapted from the one proposed for the optimized link state routing protocol (OLSR) in which only selected neighbor nodes propagate control packets to reduce the amount of control overhead. Extensive simulations and comparison to peer protocols demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed protocol in improving performance and in extending battery power longevity  相似文献
