Cloud-computing services are provided to consumers through a network of servers and network equipment. Cloud-network (CN) providers virtualize resources [e.g., virtual machine (VM) and virtual network (VN)] for efficient and secure resource allocation. Disasters are one of the worst threats for CNs as they can cause massive disruptions and CN disconnection. A disaster may also induce post-disaster correlated, cascading failures which can disconnect more CNs. Survivable virtual-network embedding (SVNE) approaches have been studied to protect VNs against single physical-link/-node and dual physical-link failures in communication infrastructure, but massive disruptions due to a disaster and their consequences can make SVNE approaches insufficient to guarantee cloud-computing survivability. In this work, we study the problem of survivable CN mapping from disaster. We consider risk assessment, VM backup location, and post-disaster survivability to reduce the risk of failure and probability of CN disconnection and the penalty paid by operators due to loss of capacity. We formulate the proposed approach as an integer linear program and study two scenarios: a natural disaster, e.g., earthquake and a human-made disaster, e.g., weapons-of-mass-destruction attack. Our illustrative examples show that our approach reduces the risk of CN disconnection and penalty up to 90 % compared with a baseline CN mapping approach and increases the CN survivability up to 100 % in both scenarios.  相似文献

In this paper, the effect of different fuel injection strategies on the combustion process was investigated in a boosted port fuel injection spark-ignition engine. The experiments were performed on a partially transparent single-cylinder engine, equipped with a four-valve head and boost device. Single and double fuel injection strategies were tested in the open-valve condition. Moreover, two fuel injection pressures were considered. Optical techniques based on 2D-digital imaging were used to follow the flame propagation in the combustion chamber. In particular, the diffusion-controlled flames near valves and on cylinder walls due to the fuel film burning were studied. Two-colour pyrometry was employed to measure soot concentration. In-cylinder optical investigations were correlated to the engine parameters and to the exhaust emissions.  相似文献

In mixed-line-rate (MLR) networks, different line rates on different wavelengths can coexist on the same fiber. MLR architectures can be built over transparent optical networks, where the transmitted signals remain in the optical domain along the entire path. Along the transparent optical path, a signal experiences various physical layer impairments (PLIs), and its quality degrades as it travels through each optical component. One of the major factors that affect the transmission quality is the launch power of the optical signal. The power must be large enough to ensure noise resiliency at the receiver, but it must be below the limit where fiber nonlinearities distort the signal. Moreover, high launch power is disruptive not only for the actual lightpath itself but also for neighboring lightpaths, and this effect is particularly critical in MLR networks since advanced modulation techniques used for high line rates are highly susceptible to PLIs. In this study, we investigate the problem of determining the appropriate launch power for provisioning of dynamic connection requests in MLR networks. By setting the appropriate launch power for each connection, we aim to maximize the number of established connections. We propose two different heuristics to determine the appropriate launch power of a lightpath. Worst-case best-case average (WBA) is based on optical reach of signal in a transparent optical network. In impairment-aware launch power determination (I-ALPD), current state of the network and impairments are evaluated to determine the launch power. The proposed approaches are practical and can adapt to the needs of network operators. Simulation results show that the performances of the proposed approaches show better results than the existing schemes in terms of blocking probability and bandwidth blocking ratio.  相似文献

Cloud services delivered by high-capacity optical datacenter networks are subject to disasters which may cause large-area failures, leading to huge data loss. Survivable service provisioning is crucial to minimize the effects of network/datacenter failures and maintain critical services in case of a disaster. We propose a novel disaster-aware service-provisioning scheme that multiplexes service over multiple paths destined to multiple servers/datacenters with manycasting. Our scheme maintains some bandwidth (i.e., degraded service) after a disaster failure vs. no service at all. We formulate this problem into a mathematical model which turns out to be an Integer Linear Program (ILP), and we provide heuristic optimization approaches as ILP is intractable for large problem instances. Numerical examples show that exploiting manycasting by intelligently selecting destinations in a risk-aware manner for service provisioning offers high level of survivability against link and node failures that may be caused by disasters and post-disaster failures at no extra cost compared to the other survivable schemes.  相似文献

Drug resistance is emerging in many important microbial pathogens, including Candida albicans. We performed fungal susceptibility tests with archived isolates obtained from 1984 through 1993 and fresh clinical isolates obtained from 1994 through 1997 by testing their susceptibilities to fluconazole, ketoconazole, and miconazole and compared the results to the rate of fluconazole use. All isolates recovered prior to 1993 were susceptible to fluconazole. Within 3 years of widespread azole use, we detected resistance to all agents in this class. In order to assess the current prevalence of resistant isolates in our hematologic malignancy and transplant patients, we obtained rectal swabs from hospitalized, non-AIDS, immunocompromised patients between June 1995 and January 1996. The swabs were inoculated onto sheep's blood agar plates containing 10 microg of vancomycin and 20 microg of gentamicin/ml of agar. One hundred one yeasts were recovered from 97 patients and were tested for their susceptibilities to amphotericin B, fluconazole, flucytosine, ketoconazole, and miconazole. The susceptibility pattern was then compared to those for all clinical isolates obtained throughout the medical center. The antifungal drug histories for each patient were also assessed. The yeasts from this surveillance study were at least as susceptible as the overall hospital strains. There did not appear to be a direct linkage between prior receipt of antifungal agent therapy and carriage of a new, drug-resistant isolate. Increased resistance to newer antifungal agents has occurred at our medical center, but it is not focal to any high-risk patient population that we studied. Monitoring of susceptibility to antifungal agents appears to be necessary for optimizing clinical therapeutic decision making.  相似文献

Despite the widespread use of methylprednisolone and the well-appreciated effects of this drug on HPA suppression, little data is available which describes individual patient exposure to both methylprednisolone and cortisol following renal allograft placement. The clinical utilization of methylprednisolone during the early post-transplant period is based upon standardized dosing protocols that do not consider factors which may influence the pharmacokinetics of this drug during the post-transplant period. Therefore, this study was designed to examine the pharmacokinetics of methylprednisolone (mean dose: 28 mg) and cortisol pharmacodynamics in 9 renal transplant recipients (4 females; 5 males) who were studied during the early post-transplant period (5 to 12 days after surgery). All patients (mean serum creatinine: 1.4 +/- 0.3 mg/dl) had serial blood samples collected over a 12- to 24-hour period (depending upon the dosing schedule) which were analyzed concurrently for methylprednisolone and cortisol. A three-fold variation in drug clearance ranging from 174 to 638 ml/h/kg with a range in the volume of distribution of 0.83 to 2.24 l/kg and resultant half-lives ranging from 1.20 to 3.02 hours was noted. The cortisol response was quantitated by a 12-hour cortisol area under the curve (C-AUC12) to examine the interpatient cortisol patterns during the early post-transplant period. C-AUC12 ranged from 44.0 to 636 ng.h/ml. Significant correlations were noted between the cortisol plasma concentration at 12 hours and methylprednisolone clearance and area under the concentration versus time curve (AUC). Interpatient variability in the disposition of methylprednisolone and cortisol response noted during the early post-transplant period contradict the clinical assumptions which underlie the fixed dosing protocols currently utilized for methylprednisolone.  相似文献

The chemical kinetics of the free-radical-induced degradation of the gasoline oxygenate methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in water have been investigated. Rate constants for the reaction of MTBE with the hydroxyl radical, hydrated electron, and hydrogen atom were determined in aqueous solution at room temperature, using electron pulse radiolysis and absorption spectroscopy (*OH and e- aq) and EPR free induction decay attenuation (*H) measurements. The rate constant for hydroxyl radical reaction of (1.71 +/- 0.02) x 10(9) M(-1) s(-1) showed that the oxidative process was the dominant pathway, relative to MTBE reaction with hydrogen atoms, (3.49 +/- 0.06) x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1), or hydrated electrons, <8.0 x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1). The hydroxyl radical reaction gives a transient carbon-centered radical which subsequently reacts with dissolved oxygen to form peroxyl radicals, the rate constant for this reaction was (2.17 +/- 0.06) x 10(9) M(-1) s(-1). The second-order decay of the MTBE peroxyl radical was 2k = (6.0 +/- 0.3) x 10(8) M(-1) s(-1). These rate constants, along with preliminary MTBE degradation product distribution measurements, were incorporated into a kinetic model that compared the predicted MTBE removal from water against experimental measurements performed under large-scale electron beam treatment conditions.  相似文献
