US trends in nutrient intake: the 1987 and 1992 National Health Interview Surveys

OBJECTIVES: This study examined US trends in nutrient intake, using almost identical methods and nutrient databases in two time periods. METHODS: An extensive dietary intake questionnaire was included in supplements to the 1987 and 1992 National Health Interview Surveys. Dietary data from approximately 11,000 persons in each of those years were analyzed. RESULTS: The total and saturated fat intake and the percentage of energy from fat declined among Whites and Hispanics, but only minimal changes were seen in Black Americans. The changes in fat intake were attributable principally to behavioral changes in frequency and type of fat-containing foods consumed rather than to the increased availability of leaner cuts of meat. Dietary cholesterol showed one of the largest declines of the nutrients examined. Less desirable changes were also seen. Cereal fortification played an important role in the observed changes in several micronutrients. CONCLUSIONS: Educational campaigns on dietary fat and cholesterol have been moderately effective, but not in all racial/ethnic groups. Future campaigns should emphasize maintaining or increasing micronutrient intake.     

Thiamine pyrophosphatase activity in the Golgi apparatus of calcitonin-treated osteoclasts.

The thiamine pyrophosphatase (TPPase) activity described by Novikoff and Goldfisher was examined in osteoclasts affected by calcitonin in order to elucidate whether the morphological and functional changes of the osteoclasts have an influence over the secretion function of their Golgi apparatus. The Golgi apparatus of osteoclasts of which the ruffled border had disappeared and bone resorption discontinued as the result of treatment with calcitonin showed a slight TPPase activity. The reaction products of the enzyme in these inactive osteoclasts were distinctly fewer than that of control osteoclasts, which were not affected by calcitonin. From these results, it is suggested that there may be a connection between the morphological and functional changes of osteoclasts and the secretion function of the Golgi apparatus.     

A 20 GHz 8 bit multiplexer IC implemented with 0.5 μm WNx/W-gate GaAs MESFET's

An ultrahigh-speed 8 bit multiplexer (MUX) has been developed for future-generation optical-fiber communication systems having a data rate of 20 Gb/s. This IC was fabricated using a 0.5 μm WN_x/W-gate GaAs MESFET process based on optical lithography, ion implantation, and furnace annealing for good reproducibility and high throughput. The WN_x/W bilayer gate has a low sheet resistance, improving the circuit high frequency performance. To attain 20 GHz operation, advanced circuit techniques for the source-coupled FET logic (SCFL) were introduced. A cross coupled source-follower (CCSF) was developed mainly for the highest speed buffers to enhance the bandwidth. The first-stage T-type flip-flop was designed with optimization techniques and operated up to 21.1 GHz     

Activities of Phosphorus in Copper‐Iron Liquid Alloys Saturated with Copper‐Iron Solid Solutions

In order to determine the activities of phosphorus and iron in liquid {Cu‐Fe‐P} alloys, the two coexisting phases of liquid {Cu‐Fe‐P} alloys + <Cu‐Fe‐P> solid solutions were brought into equilibrium with a mixture of Al₂O₃ + AlPO₄ + Fe_xAl₂O₄ at temperatures of 1416K and 1526K. The oxygen partial pressures were measured with the aid of a solid‐oxide galvanic cell of the type: (+)Mo / Mo + MoO₂/ ZrO₂(MgO) / {Cu‐Fe‐P} + <Cu‐Fe‐P> + <Al₂O₃> + <AlPO₄> + <FeAl₂O₄> / Fe(‐) The equilibrium reactions underlying the experiments can be expressed by 2[P]_cu + (5/2) (O₂) + <Al₂O₃> = 2 <AlPO₄> and x[Fe]_Cu + (1/2) (O₂) + <Al₂O₃> = <Fe_xAl₂O₄> The Henrian activity coefficient referred to 1 wt pct solution in pure liquid copper could be well expressed by the formula log f_P° = (4.46±0.40) ‐ (8.67±0.59)/(T/K). The iron activities referred to pure solid iron could be formulated as log a_Fe =‐ (0.37 ± 0.12) + (500 ±200) /(T/K).     

Study on estimating electric potential in space between parallel electrodes

We have been studying on estimating distribution of permittivity between measurement electrodes using capacitance and electric potential. Two arc electrodes were separated by long distance and there electrodes were surrounded by additional electrodes respectively. In past research work, we carried out numerical electric analysis for calculating the capacitance and electric potential using Finite Element Method (FEM) and compared with experimental and numerical results. The capacitance values were almost agreed with experimental and numerical results. However, the electric potential values were different between experimental and numerical results in conventional studies. In this paper, we proposed an equivalent circuit including the stray capacity and measurement method for capacitance, the electric potential in space between long distance electrodes was estimated.     

Organic LED full-color passive-matrix display

Abstract— A full-color 5.2-inch 1/4-VGA passive-matrix organic LED display has been developed, adopting selective deposition for the different emitting materials. The display features 320 (×3) × 240 pixels with an equivalent pixel size of 0.33 × 0.33 mm, white peak luminance of over 150 cd/m², and power consumption of 6 W.     

Gigahertz band GaAs monolithic limiting amplifier

The letter presents the design and performance of a gigahertz band limiting amplifier IC using GaAs MESFET IC technology. With a two-chip connection, an AM/PM conversion of 0.7°/dB over 43 dB input dynamic range at 1 GHz has been achieved.     

Application of step‐response test for evaluation of uncertainty of standard measuring system for lightning‐impulse high voltage

In evaluating the uncertainty of the standard measuring system for lightning‐impulse high voltages, which is composed of a standard voltage divider, a digital recorder, and calibrators, step‐response tests of the standard voltage divider may be useful. In this paper, a convolution algorithm is employed to calculate the output impulse voltage waveforms from measured step‐response waveforms. The uncertainties of peak‐value measurement due to the influence of the nominal epoch, uncertainty of the peak‐value measurement due to dispersion of the AC scale factor, and uncertainty of the virtual front‐time measurement due to long‐term stability are evaluated. Furthermore, the error of the virtual front time of the output waveforms is discussed. The front part of the step‐response waveform, t≤ T₃₀%, does not influence the error of the virtual front time. Therefore, for the standard voltage divider, the step‐response parameters, that is, the experimental response time, partial response time, settling time, and overshoot, have almost nothing to do with the error of the virtual front time. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
