Psychopathy, IQ, and Violence in European American and African American County Jail Inmates.

The accuracy of the prediction of criminal violence may be improved by combining psychopathy with other variables that have been found to predict violence. Research has suggested that assessing intelligence (i.e., IQ) as well as psychopathy improves the accuracy of violence prediction. In the present study, the authors tested this hypothesis by using a contemporary measure of psychopathy, the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (R. D. Hare, 2003), in a sample of 326 European American and 348 African American male offenders. The postdictive power of psychopathy was evident for both ethnic groups and robust across most changes in the operationalization of violence and the analysis conducted, whereas the postdictive power of IQ was not. No Psychopathy x IQ interactions were identified. Implications of these results for violence prediction are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Torrefied agro-industrial residue as filler in natural rubber compounds

This study explored the feasibility of using torrefied biomass as a reinforcing filler in natural rubber compounds. Carbon black was then replaced with the torrefied biomass in elastomer formulations for concentrations varying from 0% to 100% (60 parts per hundred rubber or phr total). Their influence on the curing process, dynamic properties, and mechanical properties was investigated. Results were compared with the properties of vulcanizates containing solely carbon black fillers. Time to cure (t₉₀) for compounds with torrefied biomass fillers increased, while filler-filler interactions (ΔG') decreased, compared to carbon black controls. At low strains, the tan δ values of the torrefied fillers vulcanizates were similar to the controls. Incorporation of torrefied biomass into natural rubber decreased compound tensile strength and modulus but increased elongation. Replacement with torrefied fillers resulted in a weaker filler network in the matrix. Still, results showed that moderate substitution concentrations (~20 phr) could be feasible for some natural rubber applications.     

Developing Sustainable Research Networks in Graduate Education

The traditional modes of knowledge production and circulation in academia are (slowly but surely) shifting from the hierarchical, top-down systems of print to the distributed, bottom-up systems of the Web. It is in the context of these shifts and the rapid development of Web 2.0 tools and methods that we argue for a concomitant shift in the predominant practices of graduate education in rhetoric—particularly for students of digital rhetoric. In this article, we describe the development of a research network that combines the power of digital networking with the collaborative facilitation offered by communities of practice and consider how research networks can be grown and sustained as part of the graduate education of technorhetoricians.     

Neighborhood Cohesion as a Buffer Against Hostile Maternal Parenting.

This study explored the moderating effects of children's neighborhoods on the link between hostile parenting and externalizing behavior. Participants were 1st- or 2nd-grade children in an urban northeastern community. Children were administered the Parenting and Neighborhood scales of the Child Puppet Interview, and mothers completed questionnaires on neighborhood quality and parenting practices. Census tract measures of neighborhood quality and teachers' reports of children's externalizing behavior also were obtained. Results indicated that children's and mothers' perceptions of neighborhood involvement-cohesion buffered the link between hostile parenting and externalizing problems. Children's externalizing behavior was unrelated to census tract variables. Findings highlight the protective effect of neighborhood social cohesion and the utility of including young children's perspectives in research on neighborhoods and families. Effect of silane structure on the properties of silanized multiwalled carbon nanotube-epoxy nanocomposites

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were functionalized with aminosilanes via an aqueous deposition route. The size and morphology of siloxane oligomers grafted to the MWCNTs was tuned by varying the silane functionality and concentration and their effect on the properties of a filled epoxy system was investigated. The siloxane structure was found to profoundly affect the thermo-mechanical behavior of composites reinforced with the silanized MWCNTs. Well-defined siloxane brushes increased the epoxy T_g by up to 19 °C and significantly altered the network relaxation dynamics, while irregular, siloxane networks grafted to the MWCNTs had little effect. The addition of both types of silanized MWCNTs elicited improvements in the strength of the nanocomposites, but only the well-defined siloxane brushes engendered dramatic improvements in toughness. Because the silanization reaction is simple, rapid, and performed under aqueous conditions, it is also an industrially attractive functionalization route.

Polyphenol conjugated poly(beta-amino ester) polymers with hydrogen peroxide triggered degradation and active antioxidant release

Oxidative stress has been implicated as a primary or secondary player to numerous diseases. A potential approach to control oxidative stress induced diseases is to deliver small antioxidant compounds to compromised sites at equivalent rates of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. This becomes a complicated task as antioxidant molecules typically have poor bioavailability and stability. Antioxidants synthesized into poly(beta-amino ester) (PBAE) crosslinked polymers have shown improved delivery by enhancing stability while allowing controlled release through hydrolysis. The tunable crosslinked networks show significant response to specific oxidizing environments, where free radicals can be present. Curcumin conjugated PBAE bulk films have proportional rates of accelerated degradation, thus faster release of curcumin, in a range of low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂)_, where 2′2-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride has no substantial impact. This effect suggests the possibility to create a system that releases its therapeutic agent in direct relationship to the need through ROS signaling. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Macrominerals in guinea pig milk during 21 days of lactation

Milk samples were obtained daily from English short-hair albino guinea pigs for 21 d. Analyses included six macrominerals: Ca, P, K, chloride, Na, and Mg (in order of decreasing concentration). All minerals except K gradually increased in concentration from the beginning to the end of lactation. Calcium concentration began at 38 mM on d 1 and was 78 mM on d 21. The pattern of increase was quadratic: Y (mM) = 39 -.48X (day of lactation) + .11 X2. Phosphorus concentration was 38 mM on d 1 and highest at 51 mM on d 21. Chloride was 19 mM on d 1 and 68 mM on d 21. Sodium was 13 mM on d 1 and highest at 42 mM on d 21. Magnesium was 11 mM on d 1 and was highest on d 18 (13 mM). However, K was 31 mM on d 1, reached a high of 33 mM on d 3, and was lowest on d 19 (12 mM). These changes in concentration and previously reported volume changes suggest alterations in functional capacities of ionic transport mechanisms of secretory cell membranes in this species.
