We have designed and constructed a linear polarizer for use with visible and infrared radiation. The broadband polarizer consists of four germanium plates arranged in a chevron geometry. Input radiation is incident near Brewster's angle for the first plate such that the reflected beam is preferentially s-wave polarized. This reflected beam is steered subsequently to the successive plates, always intersecting near Brewster's angle. The beam polarization at the output of the device is almost completely s-wave polarized. The ratio of the paraxial flux of the nearly extinguished p-wave polarized light to the s-wave polarized light transmitted through the device is found to be less than 10(-5) for laser illumination at wavelengths of 0.633, 1.32, 3.39, and 10.6 mum. Calculations predict that extinction ratios less than 10(-5) are achievable over the wavelength range from 0.4 mum to beyond 500 mum. Alternative design geometries involving fewer plates are also described along with their advantages and disadvantages. 相似文献

A monolithic integration platform is demonstrated for high functionality photonic circuits that include quantum-well electroabsorption modulators, semiconductor optical amplifiers, and widely tunable lasers. The platform is based on the selective removal of a set of active quantum wells located above an optical waveguide layer. Several recent studies have reported detection of HTLV-I genetic sequences in patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) including mycosis fungoides and Sezary syndrome. The purpose of this study was to determine whether HTLV-I was detectable in lesional tissues of patients suffering from diseases known to be associated with CTCL. Thirty-five cases were obtained from diverse geographical locations including Ohio, California, Switzerland, and Japan. Six of them had concurrent CTCL. Cases were analyzed using a combination of genomic polymerase chain reaction (PCR)/ Southern blot, dot blot, and Southern blot analyses. All assays were specific for HTLV-I provirus. Sensitivity ranged from approximately 10(-6) for PCR-based studies to 10(-2) for unamplified genomic blotting. Lesional DNA from patients with lymphomatoid papulosis (fourteen cases), Hodgkin's disease (twelve cases), and CD30+ large-cell lymphoma (nine cases) was tested for the HTLV-I proviral pX region using a genomic PCR assay followed by confirmatory Southern blot analysis with a nested oligonucleotide pX probe. All cases were uniformly negative. All of the Hodgkin's disease cases, eight of the large-cell lymphoma cases, and six of the lymphomatoid papulosis cases were then subjected to dot blot analysis of genomic DNA using a full-length HTLV-I proviral DNA probe that spans all regions of the HTLV-I genome. Again, all cases were negative. Finally, eleven of the Hodgkin's disease cases were also subjected to Southern blot analysis of EcoRI-digested genomic DNA using the same full-length HTLV-I probe. Once again, all cases were negative. These findings indicated that, despite utilization of a variety of sensitive and specific molecular biological methods, HTLV-I genetic sequences were not detectable in patients with CTCL-associated lymphoproliferative disorders. A widely tunable wavelength converter utilizing a separate absorption and modulation configuration and only dc bias connections is demonstrated. The device integrates an SG-DBR laser with a traveling-wave electroabsorption modulator and an optically pre-amplified receiver and introduces a simplified bias scheme by the inclusion of passive resistor and capacitor circuit elements. We discuss a the design of these passive elements and their compatibility with fabrication of photonic integrated circuits. The device demonstrates over 12 GHz optical bandwidth and error free 10 Gb/s wavelength conversion is achieved with less than 2.5 dB power penalty over 25 nm of output tuning. 相似文献

Supported gold, palladium and gold–palladium catalysts have been used to oxidatively dehydrogenate cyclohexane and cyclohexenes to their aromatic counterpart. The supported metal nanoparticles decreased the activation temperature of the dehydrogenation reaction. We found that the order of reactivity was Pd ≥ Au–Pd > Au supported on TiO2. Attempts were made to lower the reaction temperature whilst retaining high selectivity. The space-time yield of benzene from cyclohexane at 473 K was determined to be 53.7 mol/kgcat/h rising to 87.3 mol/kgcat/h at 673 K for the Pd catalyst. Increasing the temperature in this case improved conversion at a detriment to the benzene selectivity. Oxidative dehydrogenation of cyclohexene over AuPd/TiO2 or Pd/TiO2 catalysts was found to be very effective (conversion >99% at 423 K). These results indicate that the first step in the reaction sequence of cyclohexane to cyclohexene is the slowest step. These initial results suggest that in a fixed-bed reactor the oxidative dehydrogenation in the presence of oxygen, palladium and gold–palladium catalysts are readily able to surpass current literature examples and with further modification should yield even higher performance. 相似文献
