Imaging of follicular dendritic cell tumours of the liver

Follicular dendritic cell tumour of the liver is a recently recognized entity. To date, only two cases have been described, both in the pathology literature. Histologically, it resembles an inflammatory pseudotumour and immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies are required for its diagnosis. The ultrasound, computed tomography and angiographic features of two cases of follicular dendritic cell tumour of the liver are described in detail. One of the patients had multiple recurrences of this tumour. The imaging features are very similar to those of hepatocellular carcinoma. As follicular dendritic cell tumour is considered to be of low-grade malignant potential, in contrast to the dismal prognosis for hepatocellular carcinoma, it is important to be able to accurately distinguish between the two types of tumour prior to initiating definitive therapy.     

Fractal fracture and transformation toughening in CuNiAl single crystal

The fracture toughness J _Ic (ρ) and fractal dimension D _f of fractured surfaces of CuNiAl single crystal have been measured at temperatures in the range 20 °C to 120 °C, in which thermoelastic martensitic transformation takes place. The parent phase has higher fracture toughness than the martensite phase due to stress-induced transformation. The relationship between J _Ic (ρ) and D _f has been studied. It was found that log J _Ic (ρ) is linearly related to D _f if the failure involves a single mechanism. The slope of the plot may either be positive or negative for brittle or ductile failure, respectively. The difference in the J _Ic (ρ)-D _f correlation can be understood in terms of the micromechanism of fracture.     

Heterogeneous Structure Design to Strengthen Carbon-Containing CoCrFeNi High Entropy Alloy

A carbon-containing CoCrFeNi high entropy alloy (HEA) with heterogeneous structures was obtained through thermome-chanical treatments,which induced concurrent recrystallization and carbide precipitation in the alloy.A combination of high yield strength (556 MPa) and large uniform elongation (45％) was achieved in the investigated alloy.The enhancement of the strength is attributed to the combined effects of grain refinement,precipitation strengthening and microstructural het-erogeneity.Our work demonstrated that the heterogeneity design could be realized by thermomechanical processes,which provided a practical strategy for producing HEAs with high performance.     

The binding mode of an E-64 analog to the active site of cathepsin B

Two binding modes of the isobutyl-NH-Eps-Leu-Pro inhibitor tocathepsin B have been proposed. Molecular docking using an empiricalforce field was carried out to distinguish between the two modes.The search began with manual docking, followed by random perturbationsof the docking conformation and cycles of Monte Carlo minimization.Finally, molecular dynamics was carried out for the most favorabledocking conformations. The present calculations predict thatthe isobutyl-NH-Eps-Leu-Pro inhibitor preferentially binds tothe S' rather than the S subsites of cathepsin B. The S' bindingmode prediction is supported by the X-ray crystal structureof cathepsin B bound to a closely related ethyl-O-Eps-Ile-Proinhibitor, which was found to bind in the S' subsite with theC-terminal epoxy ring carbon making a covalent bond to the sulfuratom of Cys29. This agreement, in turn, validates our dockingstrategy. Furthermore, the calculations provide evidence thatthe dominant contribution to the total stabilization energyof the enzyme–inhibitor complex stems from the strongelectrostatic interaction between the negatively charged C-terminalcarboxylate group of the ligand and the positively charged imidazoliumrings of His110 and His111. The latter are stabilized and heldin an optimal orientation for interactions with the C-terminalend of the ligand through a salt bridge between the side chainsof His110 and Asp22. By comparison with the crystal structure,some insight into the specificity of the epoxyldipeptide familytowards cathepsin B inhibition has been extracted. Both thecharacteristics of the enzyme (e.g. subsite size and hydrophobicity)as well as the nature of the inhibitor influence the selectivityof an inhibitor towards an enzyme.

The transformation characteristics of ferrite in a cast of duplex stainless steel and its applications in temperature measurement

The transformation characteristics of ferrite transformation in a cast of specially designed duplex stainless steel have been studied. The ferrite content in the duplex stainless steel was found to settle to steady values after long-term exposure to high temperatures. This feature can be used for developing an average temperature indicator that is very easy to use and requires only very simple equipment.

Nitric oxide exchange in nitrosylmyoglobin

The exchange of nitric oxide in nitrosylmyoglobin, the heme pigment of nitrite-cured meat, has been studied using nitrogen-15 labelling in aqueous solution under conditions (pH, concentration of ascorbate and nitrite) similar to those prevailing in meat during the curing process, and has been found to have a half-life of approximately 2 h at 40 degrees C. One nitric oxide molecule is coordinated to the iron(II) centre of a myoglobin molecule and, in weakly acidic aqueous solution under anaerobic conditions, the exchange rate of the bound nitric oxide is proportional to the concentration of nitrosylmyoglobin, nitrite and hydrogen ion. The rate of exchange has a moderate temperature dependence, corresponding to an activation barrier of delta H+- = 47 +/- 3 kJ.mol-1 at 25 degrees C and pH 5.9, a value dramatically lower than that found for the enthalpy of activation for the oxidation of nitrosylmyoglobin by molecular oxygen, delta H+- = 110 kJ.mol-1. The difference in temperature dependence between the exchange and the autoxidation is discussed in relation to the function of nitrosylmyoglobin as antioxidant in cured meat products.
