Epidemiological techniques constitute an important method of nutritional investigation. Historical and geographical evidence suggests hypotheses which can be tested by more detailed studies. Cross-sectional surveys describe populations and provide information about prevalence; they also enable the interrelationships of various nutritional and physiological indices to be investigated. The case-control study is useful in exploring possible aetiological factors in diseases, but has the drawback that past dietary information is difficult to obtain accurately. Prospective studies identify predictors of disease and death; they are especially valuable in elucidating the natural history of disease, and supply good evidence on causation, but their duration and expense are disincentives to their use. Randomized controlled trials provide the most precise evidence about causation, and should be used whenever feasible to answer specific questions. 相似文献

and to a road and cold environment (freezing-thawing cycles and spraying of deicing salts) are presented. Colorimetric methods
have in particular been applied here to the assessment of the average chloride penetration depth and of its evolution versus

The authors present the design and the development of integrated microwave filters using suspended substrate microstrip, a technology that provides many advantages. Through quasi-static approximation the propagation structure has been treated using integral equations solved with the method of moments. Thanks to this tool of analysis and to an accurate synthesis method, a series of bandpass filters have been designed and manufactured. Classical hierarchical routing in telephone networks is extended to a wider class called out-of-chain routing in such a way that some useful properties of hierarchical routing are retained. This new routing pattern offers more potential paths than the fixed hierarchical one and can be introduced as a dynamic routing where the fixed alternate sequences change at some predetermined instants during the day. The effect of this new routing pattern on the network performances is examined. The main topic of this paper is to present heuristic methods used to optimise such routings in large networks. We show on artificial networks that the throughput of a given network can be significantly improved by suitable routing choices. We demonstrate that the integration of routing changes within a multihour dimensioning process is possible but the lack of realistic data does not permit at this time to quantify the value of routing optimization on real networks. 相似文献

Sheet molding compound (SMC) is a fiber‐reinforced polymeric composite. It is often used in automotive, marine, and industrial applications over other materials because of its high strength to density ratio, resistance to corrosion, and low cost. There is a demand in the SMC industry to be able to characterize SMC processability. This is particularly true for heavy truck body panels, one of the fastest growing applications of SMC. Because of their large size and high strength requirement, the molding forces have a major influence in the molding cycle. Also because of the long flow paths involved, the ability of the paste to carry glass needs to be properly characterized when developing new SMC materials. Growing bone responds to low or moderate exercise through significant additions of new bone in both cortical and trabecular moieties and results in adaptation through periosteal expansion and endocortical contraction. Intracortical activation frequency declines in growing bone in response to exercise, reducing porosity and the remodelling space. These adaptations can be maintained into and throughout adulthood. Young bones have a greater potential for periosteal expansion than aging bone, allowing them to adapt more rapidly and efficiently to an acute need for increased strength, but a threshold level of activity exists above which some bones respond negatively by suppressing normal growth and modelling activity, reducing geometric, mechanical and material properties in cortical and trabecular bone. From cross-sectional studies, differences in bone mass between exercising and non-exercising adults are generally less than 10%, but do not account for exercise history which may be very important, and often fail to consider important confounding variables. There is sufficient longitudinal data to demonstrate that moderate to intensive training can bring about modest increases of about 1-3% in bone mineral content (BMC) of men and premenopausal women. In young adults very strenuous training may increase BMC of the tibia up to 11% and its bone density (BD) by 7%, but may represent periosteal woven bone formation in response to excessive strain. Some evidence shows that exercise can also add bone mass to the post-menopausal skeleton, although the amounts are site-specific and relatively modest. Increases as high as 5-8% can be found after 1-2 years of intensive exercise, but additions of bone to the femur and radius are generally less than 2%, well within the range of the remodelling space and measurement precision. Although increases in bone mass of the post-menopausal skeleton may be extremely modest, physical activity is important to preserve bone mass and muscle function. Detraining reduces any bone mass increase to pre-existing values so that long-term benefits are only retained with continuing exercise. Most importantly, the amount of bone gain that can be achieved appears dependent primarily on the initial bone mass suggesting that individuals with extremely low initial bone mass may have more to gain from exercise than those with moderately reduced bone mass. 相似文献

Coded modulation has had a very significant impact on the communications scene in the decade or so since its introduction, finding practical applications from voice-band modems for telephone lines to deep-space communications. The paper introduces the principles of coded modulation and describes the two main schemes: block coded modulation (BCM) and trellis coded modulation (TCM). In particular it considers the argument between the proponents of BCM and TCM, and points out some pitfalls in the use of performance measures such as asymptotic coding gain for these schemes. It concludes that in terms of performance versus decoder complexity the schemes seem to be quite close, and the choice of the system designer may be determined by other factors 相似文献
