A technique to overcome pattern dependence in semiconductor-optical-amplifier-based wavelength converters is presented. The technique is based on a careful selection of red- and blue-shifted spectral components having complementary pattern effects in the output spectrum of a wavelength-converted signal. Significant signal quality improvements are reported at a bit rate of 40 Gb/s.  相似文献

Batteryless temperature transponders have been constructed and tested. The design employs a sensing element consisting of a miniature cavity resonator loaded with a ceramic material of high dielectric constant and large temperature coefficient of resonant frequency. This is connected by thin coaxial cable to a small dipole or sector antenna. Prototypes with sensors 3 mm in diameter have been fabricated and can resolve temperature differences of 0.1°C in air. Signals have been obtained from transponders implanted in anesthetized rats, but antenna orientation is a critical and limiting factor that will require further efforts before a system is capable of operating in freely roaming animals.  相似文献

The active component of the sex pheromone ofMatsucoccus josephi is (2E,6E,8E)-5,7-dimethyl-2,6,8-decatrien-4-one; the chemical is also a powerful kairomone of adult males and females of the bugElatophilus hebraicus the principal predator ofM. josephi. The presence of theZ isomer (2E,6Z,8E)-5,7-dimethyl-2,6,8-decatrien-4-one does not interfere with the attractancy of the activeE component forM. josephi males or the bug. Our results show a clear dose-response between trap catch ofM. josephi males andE. hebraicus. Conversely, increasing amounts of theZ isomer in the mixture did not affect the attraction of the scale insect males or the bug. The catch ofM. josephi males did not differ significantly among traps of different color, and was significantly higher with traps attached to the tree trunk than those suspended between trees. Comparison of the catch ofM. josephi among the three forests and between pine species suggests that the level of infestation ofPinus halepepsis andPinus brutia ssp.brutia is similar, despite the fact that the latter pine is resistant to the scale insect. Both sexes ofE. hebraicus were trapped in much lower numbers at the more infested sites. This may be related to interference with the activity ofE. hebraicus due to deterioration and drying of parts of the tree crowns and heavy colonization by generalist predators in injured trees.  相似文献

The composition of theAutographa gamma sex pheromone was reexamined and only (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate and (Z)-7-dodecenol were identified by capillary GC, GC-MS, and dimethyl disulfide derivatization and subsequent GC-MS analysis. The fatty acid content of the pheromone glands was also studied, and a series of saturated and unsaturated acids was identified. However, most of the related pheromonal compounds were not detected. The male response to the pheromone components was studied in a flight tunnel and compared with the response to calling females. The best synthetic baits evoked a response similar to that observed to the virgin females, but males spent significantly more time at calling females than at the synthetic baits. The preferred synthetic baits consisted of (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate alone or of a blend with 5% (Z)-7-dodecenol. Increasing the relative amount of the alcohol caused a gradual reduction in male response, particularly in the last steps of the courtship sequence. The addition of the minor sex pheromone components of the sympatric Plusiinae species,Trichoplusia ni andChrysodeixis chalcites, to theA. gamma pheromone was also investigated in the flight tunnel. Some of these components exhibited a significantly antagonistic effect on theA. gamma male courtship behavior. The most potent antagonists were (Z)-5-dodecenyl acetate and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate. The response ofA. gamma andT. ni males to conspecific and heterospecific females was also compared in the flight tunnel. In spite of great advancements in multimedia data storage and communication technologies, compression of medical data remains challenging. This paper presents a novel compression method for the compression of medical images. The proposed method uses Ripplet transform to represent singularities along arbitrarily shaped curves and Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees encoder to encode the significant coefficients. The main objective of the proposed method is to provide high quality compressed images by representing images at different scales and directions and to achieve high compression ratio. Experimental results obtained on a set of medical images demonstrate that besides providing multiresolution and high directionality, the proposed method attains high Peak Signal to Noise Ratio and significant compression ratio as compared with conventional and state-of-art compression methods.  相似文献

A multiple feedback single amplifier realization of a second order band-pass filter is considered, with certain assumptions made on the amplifier imperfections. The required component values are derived explicitly in terms of the desired filter parameters, the amplifier's open loop finite gain and a degree-of-freedom. The feasible range of the degree-of-freedom is derived. It is then used to either minimize variations of filter parameters due to changes in passive and active components (assuming properties pertaining to hybrid technology components), or minimize the variance of the filter parameters relative variations, in order that all mass produced filter sections of the same type will be similar to each other. For the first case, some useful observations are made concerning the behaviour of the filter under environmental changes, and the allocation of gain to various sections of a cascade filter. A population-wide linkage disequilibrium on bovine chromosome 14 between microsatellite ILSTS039 and DGAT1, a putative quantitative trait locus affecting milk production traits, was found in the Israeli Holstein population. A total of 394 bulls were genotyped for both DGAT1 and ILSTS039, and 1747 cows were genotyped for ILSTS039. The ILSTS039 allele termed "225," and the DGAT1 K allele (substitution of a lysine residue with alanine), were associated with decreased milk production, and increased fat production and fat and protein percent. The number of 225 ILSTS039 and K DGAT1 alleles per individual were the same for 80% of the bulls genotyped. From the effects associated with cows homozygous for the 225 allele, the effect of the quantitative trait locus appears to be approximately codominant. The substitution effect was 0.16% fat. Genotype probabilities for the quantitative gene were determined for the entire Israeli Holstein milk-recorded population, including 507,725 cows and 1442 bulls, using segregation analysis. Overall frequency of the allele that increased fat percent was 8.9% in cows and 15.5% in bulls. The frequency of this allele decreased from 1981 until 1990, from 15 to 5%, and since has increased to 10%. The effects estimated on the population-wide analyses of both cows and bulls were similar to the effect associated with DGAT1 in the daughters of genotyped bulls. Modified animal model evaluations were computed for the entire population with the effect of this gene included in the model. The correlations between the modified and standard animal model evaluations for all traits were > 0.99.  相似文献

Recently, the Shuaiba Refinery of Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) conducted a test run using mixed NiMo/CoMo catalysts in one of the H–Oil reactors to verify the specifications of a CoMo catalyst. However, reduced unit performance and unstable operation were experienced. This led to the unit shut-down and process time loss. To search the causes for the different reactor behaviours, a research work was undertaken in the Petroleum Technology Department at Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). It had found that the hydrodynamics of the mixed NiMo/CoMo and CoMo catalysts in a cold flow ebullated-bed reactor (EBR) were very different than NiMo catalyst alone.  相似文献

Crash reductions related to traffic signal removal in Philadelphia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effect on intersection crashes of converting one-way street intersections in Philadelphia from signal to multiway stop sign control was estimated. Using crash and traffic volume data for a comparison group, regression models were computed to represent the normal crash experience of signal controlled intersections of one-way streets, by impact type, as a function of traffic volume. An empirical Bayesian procedure was used to estimate what would have been the expected number of crashes at the converted intersections had they not been converted. The empirical Bayesian estimates were compared with actual counts of crashes after conversion. Estimates were obtained for different classes of crashes categorized by impact type, day/night condition, and impact severity. Aggregate results indicate that replacing signals by multiway stop signs on one-way streets is associated with a reduction in crashes of approximately 24%, combining all severities, light conditions, and impact types.  相似文献

In road safety, as in other fields, cost–benefit analysis (CBA) is used to justify the investment of public money and to establish priority between projects. It amounts to a computation by which ‘few’ – the CB analysts – aim to determine what the ‘many’ – those on behalf of which the choice is to be made – would choose. The question is whether there are grounds to believe that the tool fits the aim. I argue that the CBA tool is deficient. First, because estimates of the value of statistical life and injury on which the CBA computation rests are all over the place, inconsistent with the value of time estimates, and government guidance on the matter appears to be arbitrary. Second, because the premises of New Welfare Economics on which the CBA is founded apply only in circumstances which, in road safety, are rare. Third, because the CBA requires the computation of present values which must be questioned when the discounting is of future lives and of time. Because time savings are valued too highly when compared to life and because discounting tends to unjustifiably diminish the value of lives saved in the future, the CBA tends to bias decisions against investment in road safety.  相似文献
