Semiconductor integrated waveguide turning mirrors (IWTM) are investigated using the beam propagation method. A mirror is fabricated and modeled along with realistic geometries in the presence of offset and roughness of the mirror surface. An interference effect between waves reflected at different surfaces in the device is evidenced, that has strong impact on the device performance in the case of weakly-confining structures. A widely-accepted fabrication approach is criticized in view of this effect. A solution is outlined that minimizes the losses due to either technological limitations or interference.  相似文献

In this work, a soft‐lithographic approach to fabricate submicrometer metal organic framework (MOF)‐based 2D photonic structures is described. Nanometric zeolitic imidazole framework material ZIF‐8 (zinc) is chosen as the sensible MOF material because of its chemical stability and its vapor selective adsorption properties. Two different systems are fabricated: nanopatterned colloidal ZIF‐8 homo‐ and ZIF‐8/TiO2 heterostructures. Several features (stripes, squares, etc.) with dimensions of 200 nm are replicated on different substrates such as silicon, flexible plastics, and even aluminum cans, over relatively large surfaces (up to 1 cm2). In addition, the use of these photonic MOF‐heterostructures as very low‐cost sensing platforms compatible with smartphone technology is demonstrated. This method relies on the evaluation of the change in diffraction efficiency of the photonic MOF‐patterns, induced by the MOF refractive index variation, which is simply detected by a charge coupled device (CCD) camera, as those integrated in smartphones, without need for complex optical instrumentations for transduction data processing. Performances of the sensors are first evaluated using isopropyl alcohol adsorption/desorption cycling as a model case. In addition, a “real” environmental issue is tackled. Selective detection of styrene in presence of interfering water is demonstrated at concentrations below the human permissible exposure limit. In situ ellispometric analyses are also carried out in order to confirm the sensor performances and to propose a mechanism for styrene uptake into the nanoMOFs.  相似文献

We previously described synapsin III (Syn III) as a synaptic phosphoprotein that controls dopamine release in cooperation with α-synuclein (aSyn). Moreover, we found that in Parkinson's disease (PD), Syn III also participates in aSyn aggregation and toxicity. Our recent observations point to threo-methylphenidate (MPH), a monoamine re-uptake inhibitor that efficiently counteracts the freezing-gait characteristic of advanced PD, as a ligand for Syn III. We have designed and synthesised two different fluorescently labelled MPH derivatives, one with Rhodamine Red (RHOD) and one with 5-carboxytetramethylrhodamine (TAMRA), to be used for assessing MPH binding to Syn III by FRET. TAMRA-MPH exhibited the ideal characteristics to be used as a FRET acceptor, as it was able to enter into the SK-N-SH cells and could interact specifically with human green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged Syn III but not with GFP alone. Moreover, the uptake of TAMRA-MPH and co-localization with Syn III was also observed in primary mesencephalic neurons. These findings support that MPH is a Syn III ligand and that TAMRA-conjugated drug molecules might be valuable tools to study drug-ligand interactions by FRET or to detect Syn III in cytological and histological samples.  相似文献

Evidence for a male-produced aggregation pheromone in Tribolium brevicornis (LeConte) is reported. Methanol extracts of Tenax®-trapped volatiles were attractive to both sexes in a Petri dish bioassay. Both sexes, 2–45 days old, responded to male odors. The minimum amount of male pheromone needed to elicit a response was 10−6 insect day equivalents. Tribolium destructor, T. audax, T. castaneum and T. confusum were attracted to male extracts of their own species. Tribolium brevicornis responded to male extracts from T. castaneum and T. confusum, however the latter two species did not respond to male extracts from T. brevicornis.  相似文献

The cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne (Fabricius), is the most prevalent pest of stored tobacco and is responsible for substantial economic damage. Other than L. serricorne, few insects have been found to infest tobacco due to its low nutritional value and nicotine toxicity. Self, L.S., Guthrie, F.E., Hodgson, E. [1964a. Metabolism of nicotine by tobacco-feeding insects. Nature 204, 300-301] reported that L. serricorne metabolizes at least 70% of ingested nicotine to cotinine. This study re-examined nicotine metabolism by the L. serricorne using gas chromatography/flame ionization detection (GC/FID) and gas chromatography/thermal desorption with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC/TDS/ToF). Cigarette beetles reared on whole-wheat flour were compared with those reared on tobacco. Larvae, depurated larvae, frass, and both diets were analyzed to determine if nicotine was assimilated, sequestered, metabolized, and/or excreted. Contrary to previous findings, these data indicate that L. serricorne does not metabolize a significant amount of nicotine into cotinine. Nicotine is excreted unmodified. Older research involving nicotine metabolism by other insects should be reviewed in the light of these findings.  相似文献

For Ge nanodots approximately 20 nm in diameter grown by annealing a thin amorphous Ge layer deposited by molecular beam epitaxy on a mesoporous TiO2 layer on Si(001), photoluminescence (PL) was observed as a wide near-infrared band near 800 meV. Using a tight binding theoretical model, the energy-dependent PL spectrum was transformed into a dependence on dot size. The average dot size determined the peak energy of the PL band and its shape depended on the size distribution, including bandgap enlargement due to quantum confinement. Combining the dot sample PL with an established dependence of emission efficiency on dot diameter, it was possible to derive a dot size distribution and compare it with results obtained independently from atomic force microscopy.  相似文献

Selective laser sintering (SLS) is a powerful manufacturing technology that does not require part-specific tooling or significant human intervention and provides the ability to easily generate parts with complex geometric designs. The present work focuses on developing a manufacturing framework using this technology to produce subject-specific transtibial amputee prosthetic sockets made of Duraform PA, which is a nylon-based material. The framework includes establishing an overall socket design (using the patellar-tendon bearing approach), performing a structural analysis using the finite element method (FEM) to ensure structural reliability during patient use, and validating the results by comparing the model output with experimental data. The validation included quantifying the failure conditions for the socket through a series of bending moment and compression tests. In the case study performed, the FEM results were within 3% of the experimental failure loads for the socket and were considered satisfactory.  相似文献

This study was designed for the identification of different sperm kinetic subpopulations in feline semen using artificial neural networks (ANNs) and for the evaluation of the effect of ejaculation on motility patterns of these subpopulations. Seven tomcats presented for routine orchiectomy were electroejaculated, and after 5 days, orchiectomized and epididymal tail sperms were collected. Sperm motility characteristics were evaluated using a computer-assisted sperm analyzer that provided individual kinetic characteristics of each spermatozoon. A total of 23?400 spermatozoa for electroejaculated and 9200 for epididymal tail samples were evaluated using a multivariate approach, comprising principal component analysis and ANN classification. The multivariate approach allowed the identification and characterization of three different and well-defined sperm subpopulations. There were significant differences before (epididymal tail spermatozoa) and after (electroejaculated sperm) ejaculation in sperm kinetic subpopulation characteristics. In both epididymal and ejaculated samples, the majority of subpopulation was characterized by high velocity and progressiveness; however, the electroejaculated samples showed significantly higher values, suggesting that the microenvironment of the epididymal tail could affect the sperm motility or, alternatively, seminal plasma could increase the kinetic characteristics of the spermatozoa, indicating that only after ejaculation, the spermatozoa express their motility potential. Nevertheless, further studies are required to clarify the functional significance of each kinetic subpopulation.  相似文献
