Secretion and secretory tissues of the anal sac of the mink,Mustela vison

The sulfur-rich anal sac secretion of the mink,Mustela vison, consisted of immiscible lipid (1.7% sulfur) and aqueous (0.7% sulfur) phases. Light and electron microscopy revealed secretory tissue of two types, sebaceous (holocrine) and apocrine. A major input of sulfur into the sac appeared to be associated with glycoprotein granules present in the apical portions of the apocrine cells as X-ray energy probe microanalysis showed these to contain relatively high levels of sulfur. The lipid of the secretion, presumed to be largely of sebaceous origin, consisted mainly of wax monoesters, while the aqueous phase contained volatile fatty acids, ammonia, and amines, including putrescine (1,4-diaminobutane). The identity of the major headspace volatiles was confirmed by NMR, MS, and Raney nickel desulfuration as being 2,2-dimethylthiacyclobutane and 3,3-dimethyl-1, 2-dithiacyclopentane. These compounds were not detected by GC-MS in the headspace volatiles of the anal sac secretions of eight other mustelid species examined. Other sulfur compounds detected included isomeric dimethylthiacyclobutanes, a number of disulfides and 3-methyl-but-3-enyl methyl sulfide (isopentenyl methyl sulfide). The significance of these findings is discussed.

Prevalence of microbial biofilms on selected fresh produce and household surfaces

Investigations of biofilms in domestic environments are sparsely represented in the literature. In this study, samples of various household surfaces, including food, laundry and kitchen items, were analyzed for evidence of biofilm presence. Visualization of the surfaces was carried out using cryostage scanning electron microscopy (CSEM) and light microscopy. Qualitative evidence of the presence of biofilm formation was obtained from all of the sample groups analyzed, suggesting the widespread existence of microorganisms in biofilms on domestic surfaces. This suggests that biofilms may be important in household hygiene, and highlights the need for standardized, approved biofilm methods suitable for consumer products testing.     

Telerehabilitation: Expanding access to rehabilitation expertise

The potential of modern telecommunications and computing technologies as tools in the delivery and evaluation of assistive technology (AT) has been discussed and has been termed telerehabilitation. The problems of providing AT in rural areas parallels the delivery of health care to rural areas where the proportion of people with chronic illnesses is higher and the means to pay for them is reduced. Large distances mean long travel times, increasing costs associated with any service delivery, and consuming valuable time skilled professionals could be using to provide services elsewhere. The technology available for practising telerehabilitation is significant and expanding at a rapid rate. Currently, plain old telephone systems (POTS) and broad-band videoconferencing equipment, Internet and World Wide Web, and embedded processor systems are most widely available. These technologies continue to evolve as well as emerging technologies such as wearable sensors that will have telehabilitation applications. Issues of payment, safety liability, and licensure need to be resolved, as legislation lags the development of new technologies     

980-nm pump-band wavelengths for long-wavelength-band erbium-dopedfiber amplifiers

The impact of pump wavelength and input signal power on the output signal and backward spontaneous emission noise power of L-band erbium-doped fiber amplifiers is examined. It is shown experimentally that tuning the pump wavelength ±30-nm away from the 980-nm absorption peak provides 3-5-dB improvement in pump-to-signal conversion     

Melatonin administration does not affect isoproterenol-induced LVH.

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), a common sequella of hypertension, is associated with increased incidence of sudden cardiac death. The study reported herein measured the effect of melatonin on the heart in the setting of direct cardiac myocyte stimulation with isoproterenol, thus minimizing the role of autonomic output from the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and clarifying the effect of melatonin on LVH, an outcome of chromic hypertensions. Results show that daily injections of high dosages of melatonin do not affect heart weight:body weight or heart weight:tibia length ratios in the setting of isoproterenol-induced hypertrophy, suggesting that the cardiovascular effects of melatonin observed by others are not due primarily to a direct effect of melatonin on cardiac myocytes but to another mechanism, possibly melatonin modulation of SCN output. Melatonin has no effect on isoproterenol-induced LVH, suggesting that its cardiovascular effects are not due to a direct effect on cardiac myocytes. Melatonin has been found to have a significant effect on hypertension; however, in this study, one effect of extended hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy, which can ultimately lead to cardiac failure, was not affected, even by very large doses of melatonin in a chemically induced hypertrophy mouse model. It has been suggested that the effect of melatonin on hypertension is comparable to common antihypertensive agents.
