STUDY DESIGN: This study retrospectively reviewed the intermediate-term clinical outcome of patients who were 50 years of age or older at the time they experienced their cervical spinal cord injury. OBJECTIVES: To establish reasonable expectations for the functional outcome in the older patient with cervical spinal cord injury. BACKGROUND DATA: The long-term morbidity and mortality of large groups of patients with spinal cord injury have been reported. The specific functional ability, disposition, morbidity, and mortality of this group of older patients injured after 50 years of age, however, have been less well defined. METHODS: Forty-one consecutive patients older than 50 years of age at the time of cervical cord injury were studied, and functional abilities, independence, need for assistance in activities of daily living, disposition, morbidity, and mortality were assessed. All patients had more than 2 years of follow-up examinations (mean, 5.5 years) by the same spine injury service. RESULTS: There were 13 complete and 28 incomplete cervical cord lesions. The mean age of the patients at follow-up examination was 67.5 years. The average follow-up period was 5.5 years after injury. None of the patients with complete cord injury improved, and all required extensive care. Twenty-one (80%) of 26 of the patients with incomplete cord injury were able to ambulate with some assistance. Nineteen of 26 patients had independent or near-independent abilities with activities of daily living. Twenty (77%) of 26 were able to return home. All patients with complete cord injury (13 of 13) had died by the time of the follow-up visit. Seventy-seven percent (10 of 13) of this patient group had died within the first year. Those surviving lived an average of 3.5 years after their injury. Fourteen of 28 patients with incomplete cord injury (50%) had died by the time of the follow-up visit. Six (43%) of the 14 deaths were attributed to complications of their spinal cord injury. CONCLUSION: The functional outcome of the person older than 50 years with a complete cervical cord injury is poor. Of the 14% who survived the first year, all required extensive attendant care, and no neurologic improvement was seen. The patient with an incomplete cord injury has an overall good outcome regarding ambulation and returning to home.  相似文献

The first commercial application of the Sherritt two-stage zinc pressure leach process commenced operation at the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company metallurgical complex in Flin Flon, Manitoba (Canada), on July 2, 1993. The start-up was relatively smooth, and full design rate for the plant was achieved by September 12, 1993. Since that time, zinc extraction in the zinc pressure leach plant has consistently been in excess of 98%, and production has continued to exceed expectations. The successful operation of the Hudson Bay plant represents a significant advancement of zinc processing technology, especially with respect to meeting the environmental challenge faced by zinc plants today.  相似文献

Standard nanoindentation tests are “high throughput” compared to nearly all other mechanical tests, such as tension or compression. However, the typical rates of tens of tests per hour can be significantly improved. These higher testing rates enable otherwise impractical studies requiring several thousands of indents, such as high-resolution property mapping and detailed statistical studies. However, care must be taken to avoid systematic errors in the measurement, including choosing of the indentation depth/spacing to avoid overlap of plastic zones, pileup, and influence of neighboring microstructural features in the material being tested. Furthermore, since fast loading rates are required, the strain rate sensitivity must also be considered. A review of these effects is given, with the emphasis placed on making complimentary standard nanoindentation measurements to address these issues. Experimental applications of the technique, including mapping of welds, microstructures, and composites with varying length scales, along with studying the effect of surface roughness on nominally homogeneous specimens, will be presented.  相似文献

Systolic array architectures for self-organizing linear lists under the transpose update heuristic are presented. The first model has linear delay and restricts input on every other system cycle. The second system combines a systolic array with trees to provide logarithmic delay and input on every clock cycle. These preliminary designs can be the basis of hardware used to achieve high-speed lossless data compression for data communication and storage. On large files (greater than 40 kilobytes), our designs provide better compression than other systolic list compression schemes  相似文献

Microwave thermometry has the potential to characterize thermal gradients in lossy materials down to a few centimeters depth. The problem of retrieving temperature profiles from sets of brightness temperatures is studied using Galerkin expansion of one-dimensional (1-D) temperature profiles combined with Tikhonov regularization and predefined boundary conditions. From a priori knowledge of the temperature field shape, smooth Chebyshev polynomials are used as basis functions in the series expansion. The proposed estimator does not require iterative calculations that are normally performed using conventional numerical methods for signal parameter estimation and is, thus, very fast. Noise effects versus bandwidth limitations (smoothness of solutions) are studied in terms of four performance indexes defined in the text. In general, statistical spread of the temperature estimator increases with increasing number of Chebyshev polynomials. Systematic deviation from true values (bias) decreases as the number of Chebyshev polynomials increases. Results show that smooth temperature profiles can be reproduced using 6-7 Chebyshev polynomials. With additional constraints such as boundary conditions and maxima localization, a three-frequency-band radiometric scan is sufficient to produce acceptable results in regions with low thermal gradients. As the spatial variability of the 1-D temperature profile increases, more radiometric bands (5-6) are required to provide nonbiased estimates.  相似文献

Finite-SNR diversity-multiplexing tradeoffs in fading relay channels   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
We analyze the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff in a fading relay channel at finite signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). In this framework, the rate adaptation policy is such that the target system data rate is a multiple of the capacity of an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The proportionality constant determines how aggressively the system scales the data rate and can be interpreted as a finite-SNR multiplexing gain. The diversity gain is given by the negative slope of the outage probability with respect to the SNR. Finite-SNR diversity performance is estimated using a constrained max-flow min-cut upper bound on the relay channel capacity. Moreover, the finite-SNR diversity-multiplexing tradeoff is characterized for three practical decode and forward half-duplex cooperative protocols with different amounts of broadcasting and simultaneous reception. For each configuration, system performance is computed as a function of SNR under a system-wide power constraint on the source and relay transmissions. Our analysis yields the following findings; (i) improved multiplexing performance can be achieved at any SNR by allowing the source to transmit constantly, (ii) both broadcasting and simultaneous reception are desirable in half-duplex relay cooperation for superior diversity-multiplexing performance, and (iii) the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff at finite-SNR is impacted by the power partitioning between the source and the relay terminals. We have investigated magnetic hysteresis in transport critical-current (Ic) measurements of Ag-matrix (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10–x (Bi-2223) and AgMg-matrix Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) tapes. The effect of magnetic hysteresis on the measured critical current of high temperature superconductors is a very important consideration for every measurement procedure that involves more than one sweep of magnetic field, changes in field angle, or changes in temperature at a given field. The existence of this hysteresis is well known; however, the implications for a measurement standard or interlaboratory comparisons are often ignored and the measurements are often made in the most expedient way. A key finding is that Ic at a given angle, determined by sweeping the angles in a given magnetic field, can be 17 % different from the Ic determined after the angle was fixed in zero field and the magnet then ramped to the given field. Which value is correct is addressed in the context that the proper sequence of measurement conditions reflects the application conditions. The hysteresis in angle-sweep and temperature-sweep data is related to the hysteresis observed when the field is swept up and down at constant angle and temperature. The necessity of heating a specimen to near its transition temperature to reset it to an initial state between measurements at different angles and temperatures is discussed.  相似文献
